HAIR CUT in London

Where does a body get a head's hair cut in London?

Any tips? I don't mind paying for a decent haircut, well, paying a certain amount anyway.

Ronan, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 21:12 (seventeen years ago)

come to the harrow road. you can get a hair cut, buy drugs, get caught in the cross-fire of a drive-by and still have money left for the bus home.

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 21:15 (seventeen years ago)

i got a weird mullet at hair by fairy once

It's a bit Nathan Barley, though. Depends what you're after, I guess.

Chris in the barbershop on Rosebery Avenue next to Post Office and Antony & Alison shop, Ronan. Tell him I sent you (U&K), it's £9 and he's there on Tuesdays. I normally tip him the price of a pint. People who have gone to him include Tracer, charltonlido and Colette.

suzy, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

You can get a haircut at the Greek barbers in Finsbury Park for £4, but don't expect anything fancy.

As used by Green Day and a bunch of burlesque dancers. Should probably be nerve gassed for the good of society.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 21:26 (seventeen years ago)

Chris can do 'fancy' on request in about 20 minutes. He is ex-catwalk hair/makeup team playa who defected to barbershop realness. Before I found Chris, I went to CUTS in Soho which is completely entertaining in every way, you walk in and there's a discussion going on and everyone chips in whether they're in the chair or holding implements. Also a bit of an off-schedule music industry haunt. Conrad or Daniel there will sort you out but it's whoa expensive compared to Hairdresser Chris.

suzy, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

Thought this would be a liveblog.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 22:01 (seventeen years ago)

ha ha I would certify The Lounge, Peter St. Soho too. I've been going there for 5+ years, tried trendy east London places in between but hate the fickle trends that they dictate. Okay it's quite media but not obsessed. Not saying who my stylist is cos it's a nightmare getting him already!

i'm not too proud to say i have had my hair cut in this very establishment

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 23:15 (seventeen years ago)

oh no i didn't, that's in Brighton. i guess after a while they all look the same.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

The day I had a number 2 crew cut in a Mr Toppers... the guy f*&ked up with sprouting bits over my head, which I didn't notice. obv.. WAS THE FUNNIEST DAY... nipped into Argos before closing, bought clippers, went home and did it again.. JESUS!!!

mmmm, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 23:21 (seventeen years ago)

in fact I could give you a list of no-go places...

mmmm, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 23:25 (seventeen years ago)

I go to this old dude's place just off the Old St. roundabout. £9 cut no fuss no muss.

blueski, Thursday, 17 April 2008 06:20 (seventeen years ago)

i go to local barbers around holloway these days, sometimes supercut. paying more than £11 for a man's haircut is just wasting money.

ken c, Thursday, 17 April 2008 09:39 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, Chris is good

xpost is it "Hair Machine" you're talking about ken??

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 17 April 2008 09:40 (seventeen years ago)

One can get a good beard trim in the barber's where chris works as well, although for poncing around try the barbers in the basement of liberty.

Ed, Thursday, 17 April 2008 09:41 (seventeen years ago)

haha. it's "ossie's barbers" on parkhurst road i go to now. or sometimes Salem Hairdressers on Hillmarton Road, where ONCE started talking to this slightly odd guy while i was waiting for my haircut, then PAID for my hair cut whilst i was getting it cut!!?!?!?! (i didn't have to have sex with him or anything)

admittedly, it would only have costed £6 in the first place.

ken c, Thursday, 17 April 2008 09:43 (seventeen years ago)

..who then PAID for my hair cut

i mean

ken c, Thursday, 17 April 2008 09:43 (seventeen years ago)

but one day i'll walk up to archway road for "short cuts"

ken c, Thursday, 17 April 2008 09:44 (seventeen years ago)

I recommend The Barber Shop on Shepherd Market in poncy Mayfair. An excellent no-nonsense haircut for about a tenner.

braveclub, Thursday, 17 April 2008 09:56 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not ashamed to say I go to Mr Toppers! I've never had a problem, but then again, my haircut is always a 'number 3, all around.'

G00blar, Thursday, 17 April 2008 10:09 (seventeen years ago)

I have gotten good haircuts at 'Essensuals' on Finchley Road, right by the tube stop. 22 quid I think?

Gravel Puzzleworth, Thursday, 17 April 2008 10:16 (seventeen years ago)

I am going very bald, believe me a good haircut works magic. A bad one looks awful.

Ronan, Thursday, 17 April 2008 22:20 (seventeen years ago)

One of my friends swears by the dudes at the Topper's around the corner from Tottenham Ct. Rd. I know, I don't get it either.

ENBB, Thursday, 17 April 2008 22:47 (seventeen years ago)

They know what they're doing! Seriously, I know I make low-risk haircut demands, but I've never had a problem with them.

G00blar, Thursday, 17 April 2008 22:48 (seventeen years ago)

And your in and out in under 10 minutes!

G00blar, Thursday, 17 April 2008 22:48 (seventeen years ago)

three years pass...

I go to this old dude's place just off the Old St. roundabout. £9 cut no fuss no muss.

more detail pls. i could do with a muss-free trim and, location-wise, that would be very convenient.

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 11:18 (fourteen years ago)

i found a top quality cutter but it's fucking expensive, 50 quid. he is guaranteed results tho imo, and decent conversation.

LocalGarda, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 11:23 (fourteen years ago)

You have admirable hair, it's true, and I like the idea of a guaranteed haircut. Tbh when I'm getting a trim I actually find no-chat more awkward than chat so this is a def point in its favour.

I may have managed to talk myself into it in typing this post, although £50 is 0_o more than I am used to paying I go so infrequently it may be worth it.

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 14:27 (fourteen years ago)

I go to an 18-year-old Jamaican woman who who grew up in London and has never heard of Sade

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 14:30 (fourteen years ago)

I have, he used to rent out Tents.

Mark G, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 14:30 (fourteen years ago)

yeah 50 quid seems like madness tho i rationalise it by reminding myself i'll be bald in a few years and won't need a haircut. i went to taylor taylor a few times and you get a champagne cocktail, it's also 50 quid, but then the the haircuts weren't up to muster so i moved on to a place on redchurch st where i now know the dude who does it well enough for a non-awkward conversation.

LocalGarda, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

just sayin, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

The magic of getting your hair cut by Ron Tent is a wonder without compare

post, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 15:14 (fourteen years ago)

"Put your hair in my scissors.. I won't cut you I promise"

that's Tenty for you, a gentle giant - he literally strokes the hair out of your head like a sea otter on show at Waterworld

post, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

ginger girl at pimps and pinups wuz great at putting up with me

"shorter but not short, trendy but not fashionble i probably won't get it cut again for another year, sorry it's such a mess i tried to cut it a while bacl etc etc"

think it was about £25. bad music. very nathan barley. but my best haircut experience in london so far.

Crackle Box, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

mmmm, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 20:20 (fourteen years ago)

I'm coming to London in a month and a half and will be bringing my hair kit. I would be willing to cut people's hair for 50 pounds.

qpә (EDB), Thursday, 18 August 2011 00:33 (fourteen years ago)

By the way, I'm totally serious about this. I'll cut hair for cheap.

qpә (EDB), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 19:53 (fourteen years ago)

50 ain't cheap to me but i'd be up for a FAP.. or is that a FAHC?

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

What is cheap? 10? 5?

Since I cut my own hair anyways I figured I can make pocket change by cutting people's (i.e. future classmates') hair for bottom of the line prices.

qpә (EDB), Thursday, 25 August 2011 01:07 (fourteen years ago)

I'm going to London in a month and that means I'll be losing the services of the friend who's been cutting my hair for free for the past eight years, if you can match that service then YOU'VE GOT A DEAL.

Merdeyeux, Thursday, 25 August 2011 01:39 (fourteen years ago)

I can cut your hair for free, but it'll cost you...

qpә (EDB), Thursday, 25 August 2011 01:54 (fourteen years ago)

50 quid for a haircut wtf

Pizzataco Five (admrl), Thursday, 25 August 2011 02:03 (fourteen years ago)

yeah but he does cut his own hair so he knows what he's doing.

jed_, Thursday, 25 August 2011 06:42 (fourteen years ago)

I pay £50 but I am a girl and that's what happens, sigh. I'm also on the lookout for a London hairdresser as mine recently fucked off to Ibiza. The salon gave me a superior stylist for the price I used to pay and it was a great cut, but it will be £70 if I go to her again and ... no.

Madchen, Thursday, 25 August 2011 08:02 (fourteen years ago)

groupon/kgb sometimes have deals - just got a voucher for haircut that is £8 in fact (cheaper than mr toppers)

Gary Numan, or Gary Fletcher (ken c), Thursday, 25 August 2011 09:16 (fourteen years ago)

Like, stacked up against everything you can get for 50 pounds, who's going to take a haircut over that? Having not paid for a haircut in almost 8 years, I've easily saved over 600 dollars, which I am enjoying on better things.

qpә (EDB), Thursday, 25 August 2011 12:12 (fourteen years ago)

Stacked up against what exactly? Your hair is on your head all day every day, plus if you've only got a few years left of it no harm actually getting it to look well. Makes a big diff if you're receding to go somewhere good. I don't expect everyone to agree, presumably others spend cash on things I wouldn't.

LocalGarda, Thursday, 25 August 2011 12:23 (fourteen years ago)

I dunno, I feel that something like 5 records is worth mangy hair for another 2-3 months. But I'm notoriously frugal like that.

qpә (EDB), Thursday, 25 August 2011 12:27 (fourteen years ago)

I feel better if I feel I look okay, maybe unusual for a guy but it's true!

LocalGarda, Thursday, 25 August 2011 12:33 (fourteen years ago)

Excerpt from my forthcoming L'Oreal campaign.

LocalGarda, Thursday, 25 August 2011 12:34 (fourteen years ago)

Don't get me wrong, I definitely do too. But my anabating love for material possessions has the power of overriding that.

qpә (EDB), Thursday, 25 August 2011 13:42 (fourteen years ago)

3 nights out on the booze is around 50 quid these days.

Gary Numan, or Gary Fletcher (ken c), Thursday, 25 August 2011 13:45 (fourteen years ago)

never paid for then a tenner for a haircut though

Gary Numan, or Gary Fletcher (ken c), Thursday, 25 August 2011 13:45 (fourteen years ago)

more than

Gary Numan, or Gary Fletcher (ken c), Thursday, 25 August 2011 13:46 (fourteen years ago)

diouf est le papa du foot galsen merde lè haters (nakhchivan), Thursday, 25 August 2011 13:47 (fourteen years ago)

as much as i lyke 2 look sexxee i guess i don't value hairstyles enough to think there's a significant difference between a moderately competent DIY number and an expensive professional job. also i too like things. if i were bald and could spend the money on permanently available wigs then maybe that's different.

Merdeyeux, Thursday, 25 August 2011 13:47 (fourteen years ago)

Xpost: as a feudal lord, I always have to look my best, but also maintain a shrewd financial profile. That's why I've learned to master the art of auto-hair cutting.

Also, not the best picture, but for reference.

qpә (EDB), Thursday, 25 August 2011 14:32 (fourteen years ago)

When I was at uni and my mum found out how much I paid for a haircut (about £30 at the time) she went mad until I reminded her I could be spending the money on cigarettes.

Madchen, Thursday, 25 August 2011 15:21 (fourteen years ago)

EDB, that does look good tbh although some hair cuts or hair types are easier than others. there was another ilxor on the WDYLL thread a couple of months back who posted his own self-cut hair pic and everyone was like "great job" and it it was a totally shit hair cut and no one was doing him any favours by saying otherwise but what can you do.

jed_, Thursday, 25 August 2011 15:25 (fourteen years ago)

For sure. It took about 4 years of wreaking sheer violence on my head to be able to get to that. And even still, I can only do two styles (that, and a shorter version of that). My whole idea is that, at school, I can provide a basic service to mangy, unkempt, and broke graduate students, and get a couple of pounds here and there. Win-Win etc.

qpә (EDB), Thursday, 25 August 2011 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

there's some place in whitechapel that will do this for you for free as long as you talk about capitalism or something

Michael B, Thursday, 25 August 2011 18:57 (fourteen years ago)

i sort of see the point when people say about buying books or whatever, except i know people who readily spend a lot of money on say, a pair of jeans, when ime good jeans are cheap, or other clothes, then get a shitty haircut. as i say, your hair is there day in day out. i also am so deep into this philosophy that i don't compare it to other things, getting a haircut is like paying for light and heat or whatever, except that if i'm skint i'll just have to wait till i have the money. i used to pay a good bit less and i'm fairly sure you can get a great haircut for less, but i am also certain that where i'm going is far and away the best haircuts i've got anywhere.

LocalGarda, Thursday, 25 August 2011 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

ie my experience with haircuts is if you find a good one stick to it, when i paid eg £20 i'd be back way more often and it would be hit/miss as well, and they never listened properly.

LocalGarda, Thursday, 25 August 2011 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

i've done cheap and pricey in my time and there really is no rhyme or reason to the quality you'll receive, even with (what you'd effing bloody well think were) classical standard mens styles. you just have to find someone who "gets it" as it were.

another thing is that the mark of a truly great haircut is that it will grow out very well, which is a strongly mitigating factor should it happen to have been expensive. (although luckily mine's a tenner now so i can treat myself monthly).

agree with all this...mind you i find mine grows out less well as the front is slowly ceasing to grow. not majorly receded yet but it is noticeable in terms of growing out.
