Well shit, the economy polls as the #1 issue but people will vote republican when those policies will (arguably) screw them. It's a democrat talking point, and one I mostly agree with, that republican policies screw the factory workers of the country. Democrats don't get why people would vote republican if the economy's the thing.
Way to bring religion into it..

"I am a Christian" would have played a lot better than "I am a person of faith," Senator Obama, just for future reference
― J0hn D., Thursday, 17 April 2008 00:19 (seventeen years ago)
Ooh and Obama's running with it! Oddly enough my mostly-liberal but evangelical-type friends (who are typically apolitical because of that, and their relative youth) really like Obama's interest in faith.
― mh, Thursday, 17 April 2008 00:20 (seventeen years ago)

lol clinton glaring at the insinuated cycle of abuse
― jhøshea, Thursday, 17 April 2008 00:21 (seventeen years ago)
J0hn, it does to a certain crowd, but there's a growing interest of people who remember that mixing religion and politics degrade both institutions and I think Obama's pulled people like that to his side -- he has obvious Christian background, but he politically is pretty good at looking who he represents. It's a good angle.

i missed it, but from reading this thread i gather this
ABC gifting Clinton with a four-point poll spike so they can keep their horserace shit going, that's what this is about
is exactly right. it's also a gift their good, stalwart, honest, heroic friend john mccain can enjoy.

No Whining About the Media By David Brooks
Three quick points on the Democratic debate tonight: First, Democrats, and especially Obama supporters, are going to jump all over ABC for the choice of topics: too many gaffe questions, not enough policy questions. I understand the complaints, but I thought the questions were excellent. The journalist’s job is to make politicians uncomfortable, to explore evasions, contradictions and vulnerabilities. Almost every question tonight did that. The candidates each looked foolish at times, but that’s their own fault. We may not like it, but issues like Jeremiah Wright, flag lapels and the Tuzla airport will be important in the fall. Remember how George H.W. Bush toured flag factories to expose Michael Dukakis. It’s legitimate to see how the candidates will respond to these sorts of symbolic issues.

Uhhh, my mom is probably voting for McCain (I know) but she was delighted that people were going WTF is this total circus, said 'about time'. She likes Obama but can get vexed about Wright and thinks O's a hair to young.
This election is going to go almost completely along generational lines. Are there enough people under 45 to give it to Obama?

― Hatch, Thursday, 17 April 2008 17:29 (seventeen years ago)
Guys, I just went to McCain's site to see what talking points are there in response to what's on the other side of the fence, and they have this poll:
By how much would the Democrats' budget resolution raise America's tax bill? * $0 * $500 million * $200 billion * $500 billion
Is this a poll or a trivia show?
― mh, Thursday, 17 April 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

― G00blar, Thursday, 17 April 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)
There are plenty of Obama supporters well over 45 -- my mom, for one. Might help if Suzy weren't watching all this from another country.

― If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:07 (seventeen years ago)
It is annoying to have to watch from another country but OTOH I would probably have gone mental from the 24/7 news by now plus arguments with more conservative family members. I wish I could get the part of my mom that was happy when O won Iowa because of 'the message it would send the world' to overrule the Wright-related outbursts which are the expression of her racism, in that she holds black people to higher standards than white counterparts, and just vote for the guy, she agrees with him on enough stuff. But bottom line, she thinks his associations mark his inexperience. My sister will vote however my mom does and the son-of-militia bro-in-law is pretty much in the bag for McCain.
So I guess the real question is that are there enough people in the shifting 'younger voter' category plus older more liberal people plus Dems who are over the Clintons plus 90 per cent of black vote plus yada yada to counter the standard GOP crap with sprinkles on?
― suzy, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:49 (seventeen years ago)
Obama hopes his older supporters cancel out secret racists of all ages
― Dr Morbius, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:57 (seventeen years ago)
Reverend Wright youtube clips are like the Dean scream moment of 2008, some loud moment taken out of the original context and put into one where the hyperbole is made to sound "unpatriotic."
Even if the guy meant every word he said in a straight context, what does that mean for the Obama campaign? That he's running for president because he's trying to unseat some white superiority-led conspiracy that keeps black people down and encourages terror?
