No question - Meville Fuller, chief of the most anti-black, most pro-business Court ever. (In)famous decisions include: Plessy vs Fergueson, Lochner vs New York.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

So Truman and FDR are the only presidents in the last 120 years to appoint Chief Justices?

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)

DEMOCRAT presidents, I mean.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:42 (seventeen years ago)

Jackson and Cleveland too.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

but you don't want Roger Taney and Fuller on your side.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

Fuller also ruled the income tax unconstitutional and cut the Sherman Antitrust Act off at the knees.

Martin Van Burne, Thursday, 17 April 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

People looking to hate Grover Cleveland for something need only consider his apppointment of Fuller.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Threw in a pity vote for Warren Burger, because he was a documented shit, but Fuller's got the stuff for this poll.

I can't bring myself to hate Rehnquist, especially after reading Jeffrey Toobin's book.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 18 April 2008 01:46 (seventeen years ago)

I find Charles Evans Hughes the most underrated/underpublicized figure in 20th century American history. What a resume: progressive Republican governor of New York, associate SCOTUS justice, narrowly losing to Wilson in 1916, secretary of state to Harding, and Chief Justice of SCOTUS who finally ratified most of FDR'S New Deal legislation after allowing The Four Horsemen to repeal it for two years.

OT but i was skimming through one of robert bork's crazy-old-man screeds ("slouching towards gomorrah," or something like that") a while back -- which included, no kidding, a chapter titled "the case for censorship" -- and thinking, imagine if bork had actually been appointed. is there even the slightest chance he might've wound up chief justice? i think that's a prospect even scarier than, say, giuliani as pres.

J.D., Friday, 18 April 2008 08:02 (seventeen years ago)

bork on the court at all is scarier than giuliani as pres, nevermind chief justice. vile vile man.

are any of these ppl as depraved as this former lord chief justice

It has been claimed that Goddard had a particular personal reaction to sentencing people to death. According to his valet, Goddard would have an orgasm during sentencing and his trousers had to be sent off to be cleaned as a result.[14][15] [16] Another version suggests Goddard reacted in this way when sentencing young men to be birched.
