Does being a totally funny asshole justify the assholery?

Abbott, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

victim laughed later

El Tomboto, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

Sometimes I think it does, if the person is really funny and I am not the object of their assholish japes, but I feel guilty for feeling this way due to my string anti-asshole policy.

Abbott, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

Is string an effective asshole deterrent?

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I'm pretty anti-asshole when it comes to strings too. Smug, ropy bastards.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

I don't like superstrings.

Abbott, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:33 (seventeen years ago)

this thread title is the subtext of many sub-board meta threads

blueski, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think it's funny when people behave like assholes, so no. In other words, if they violate the "do unto others" sort of thing, then all access to my laughter centers is automatically shut off.

But, obnoxiousness, (in small doses, anyhow) of various stripes is a different story.

dell, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

yes it does!

homosexual II, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

There have been times that I have laughed at outright assholery, though. Like a couple of "Do's and Don'ts" over the years. The concept of that column is appalling to me, but the writers crack some good one liners every now and again.

Savannah Smiles, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

I like Dom and Ethan, so I guess my answer to the thread's question is yes.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

Dunno, it seems like the world is funny enough as is. Why would there be cause to resort to behaving cruelly towards others for comedy's sake?

What is the definition of assholeishness that is being invoked here?

dell, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:50 (seventeen years ago)

Why would there be cause to resort to behaving cruelly towards others for comedy's sake?

Agree that this is a very recent development in comedy.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

this reminds me of andy breckman on ssd last week, talking about being an asshole, "thank god i'm funny. can you imagine if i wasn't funny?!"

Jordan, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

You really can't be that funny if you're nice all the time. If you try, you'll end up like Jay Leno.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

...or Ned Ragget. /asshole

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

I think the Do's and Don'ts thing has been really funny sometimes. And, furthermore, I've found the majority of the funniest ones to be the in "Do's" side.

In any case, I don't think that column constitutes assholishness, necessarily. Being an asshole is more like peeing in someone's beer or something. Or, say, a group of kids bullying another kid to the point of tears.

dell, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

Lantern jawed or owner of a blue tie? I'll choose the latter.

aimurchie, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

Agree that this is a very recent development in comedy.

We're talking about "real life" situations, though, not films, theater, literature, etc.

dell, Thursday, 17 April 2008 16:56 (seventeen years ago)

You really can't be that funny if you're nice all the time. If you try, you'll end up like Jay Leno.

Doesn't it sort of depend on the "audience"?

I think I'm getting it all mixed up with the douchey thread. Are they the same? Is being an asshole similar to being a douchebag?

aimurchie, Thursday, 17 April 2008 17:10 (seventeen years ago)

Imaginary sentence, possibly never spoken by anyone: "Sure I'm an asshole, but I'm a *funny* asshole."

More realistic: "Sure I'm an asshole. Go fuck yourself."

gabbneb, Thursday, 17 April 2008 17:19 (seventeen years ago)

Questions of comedic worth aside, the thing that I never understand about people who consistently behave like tremendous assholes is, I can't figure out if they have just never gone through any seriously really lousy shit in their lives, and hence are lacking in empathy to some degree, or if it's rather the case that they have gone through no end of horrible traumatic shit, and their assholeishness is a coping mechanism of sorts.

dell, Thursday, 17 April 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

One of my best friends in high school, I always had to justify him to other people with this.

He turned out to be a really terrible person who did genuinely awful things, and I've always felt extremely guilty for defending him.

So, fuck this justification.

en i see kay, Thursday, 17 April 2008 17:37 (seventeen years ago)

i dunno, a lot of the people i know who went through awful shit are more cynical and untrustworthy than they are assholes. i think in most cases going through awful shit and being an asshole have nothing to do with each other.

omar little, Thursday, 17 April 2008 17:39 (seventeen years ago)

Being proud/defiant about being an asshole is like being proud of being a premature ejaculator. Same thing -- it's just a lack of emotional dick control. The worst thing is trying to claim it as some sort of admirable trait -- "fuck you, yeah, I shoot in 12 seconds, but I'm gettin' plenty and I'm keepin' it real. I can ball 20 times a day if I stay hydrated, how about you, chump? You and your long-lasting erections, think you're so nice. Way to stay on the girls' good side."

i dunno, a lot of the people i know who went through awful shit are more cynical and untrustworthy than they are assholes. i think in most cases going through awful shit and being an asshole have nothing to do with each other.

Hmm, yeah, I suppose that's true in many cases. It would seem to follow that if someone has gone through intense loads of traumatic shit, then they might be likely to act from a place of being extremely reluctant to extend faith towards other human beings, as opposed to just operating as monstrous assholes in day-to-day life.

But, then there's the thing of the abused growing up to take on an abusive role, so I dunno.

dell, Thursday, 17 April 2008 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway, everyone is an asshole potentially, or does assholish things. If you are bent upon identifying with being a "nice" person, then you are potentially setting yourself up for decades of self-deception and misery foisted upon yourself and others.

dell, Thursday, 17 April 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

when i think of "funny" assholes i also think of all of that shit sexy-sexy whiteboy and/or non-white and/or non-boy sex rhyming with sex and awful music that alex in baltimore polled in those threads.

omar little, Thursday, 17 April 2008 17:58 (seventeen years ago)

Aw, kenan, no, that sentence is real! It was spoken by the man who I chose to take my virginity, because he was attractive and somewhat amusing but so repellent as to guarantee I'd not end up in a relationship. And it worked!

Abbott, Thursday, 17 April 2008 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

NB I have a hard time thinking of you as an asshole, kenan!

Abbott, Thursday, 17 April 2008 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

Funniness > assholishness => winner.

Also worth consideration are how much the target deserves it, how much of a public figure they are, etc.

libcrypt, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

In any case, if you are 3 on the funnie and 9 on the asshole, then you are a turd.

libcrypt, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

Also, if the target has been asking for it, the asshole meter goes down to 0 automatically. E.g., if you spent all yr time on ILX zinging Dom, you might not be very funny about it, but yr funnie/asshole karma would be neutral.

libcrypt, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

NB I have a hard time thinking of you as an asshole, kenan!

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 24 March 2012 14:18 (thirteen years ago)

Being an urban sort who drives a lot, I'm not prone to throwing the term "asshole" around. I reserve it for people who truly deserve it. IME anyone who is truly funny is probably worth caring about in some fashion.

An asshole is someone who consistently refuses to act human. Not, like, losing your temper or saying something bitchy once in a while.

Depends what you mean by funny. Like, junior high style bullying isn't really funny when practiced by an adult.

WAs just thinking about an individual who is on several chatlists I used to frequent who has got to be one of the most complete assholes going.
Continually acts up to people then starts wailing about flaming when he gets a response. Has been known to write offlist to people he's pissed off to complain to them about their behaviour to him.
Always tries to make out that he's been flamed out of the blue when he's made some creepy personal comment about another person on the list. If this is brought up he is likely to announce that he told 'a joke', only thing is his 'sense of humour' tends to be derogatory remarks made about other people.
I've never seen the attraction of that kind of behaviour, always just found the guy very creepy. Especially when he started announcing that the person he'd been flaming should grow up or was acting like a child.
Maybe it just doesn't 'count as flaming' when certain individuals do it?

Stevolende, Saturday, 24 March 2012 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

Complaining about "flaming" on the internet doesn't get you very far, sadly. The "bad personality" seems to be a staple of most large internet fora and everyone is expected to deal with it. My favorite is the "grow up" ... when you know you're an adult.

โตเกียวเหมียวเหมียว aka Colored on TV! (Mount Cleaners), Saturday, 24 March 2012 22:04 (thirteen years ago)

An asshole is someone who consistently refuses to act human. Not, like, losing your temper or saying something bitchy once in a while.

This, pretty much. As someone who's half asshole (on my dad's side) and who has always gravitated towards jestery, I have to be super vigilant about not becoming the subject of the thread topic. Mean humor comes super easy to me, so I treat it as if it were a weapon: with fear and respect and as something that probably belongs in a glass case in my living room rather than on my hip. Being unnecessarily hurtful to others kinda kills my soul, so I've been pretty good about keeping my mouth in check. It helped a lot when I realized that quality laughs and kindness are in no way mutually exclusive.
