Best "Fast Casual" Restaurant

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A fast casual restaurant is a type of restaurant that is similar to a fast-food restaurant in that it does not offer full table service but promises a somewhat higher quality of food and atmosphere. It is a growing concept to fill the space between fast-food and casual dining. The typical cost per guest is in the $6–$10 range.

Counter service accompanied by handmade food (often visible via an open kitchen) is typical. Alcohol may be served. Dishes like steak may be offered. The menu is usually limited to an extended over-counter display, and options in the way the food is prepared are emphasized. Health-conscious items have a larger-than-normal portion of the menu. Some restaurants may emphasize high quality ingredients like free-range chicken and freshly made salsas. Overall, the quality of the food is presented as much higher than conventional factory-made fast food. While full table service is not offered, conveniences like non-plastic utensils and plates are common.

The moderate volume music and nontraditional decor pioneered by Starbucks are fully embraced by fast casual restaurants — approximately half of the customers eat in the establishment, compared with a quarter of fast food customers.

Technomic Information Services created the term "fast casual restaurants" to describe restaurants with the following classifications:

* Limited-service or self-service format
* Average check between $6 and $9
* Made-to-order food with more complex flavors than fast food restaurants
* Upscale or highly developed decor

There is a Fast Casual magazine, launched by NetWorld Alliance and published by Paul Barron, who coined the term "Fast Casual" in the late 1990s.

ZANKOU

lauren, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

here are my comments
- Cici's is like the grossest thing I can think of right now
- Rubio's is also really gross, like everything is too soggy
- Spicy Pickle is okay but gives me weird poops
- Pollo Campero would be delicious but I'm a vegetarian. Ate there once before I went back to being vegetarian and it was pretty delish.
- I can jam on some Noodles & Co once in a while
- I can also jam on some Baja Fresh but they all seem to be going out of business lately
- All sub sandwich places are disgusting. Quizno's is grodey.

homosexual II, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

homosexual II, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

Shit, Five Guys counts?!

G00blar, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

Voted for Cosi. They do a good caprese sandwich. Also love getting the bread bits still hot from the oven to snack on while in line.

jaymc, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

Jamburritos "Cajun Grille"

haha, this really exists?

Jordan, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:35 (seventeen years ago)

McAlister's Deli is decent, esp. the baked potatoes, and I have to support the local boys who done good. Back when there was only the one location, they had a "no tipping please, we pay our employees a real wage" policy. (I don't think they do that anymore, but not sure.)

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:36 (seventeen years ago)

i've eaten my share of jimmy john's/noodles/panera/etc., but i'm voting for zaxby's for their untouchable slogan.

Jordan, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:36 (seventeen years ago)

Putting Taco John's on here is really aspirational since they're fast food.

mh, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)

"aspirational" is apparently my new favorite word judging by recent ile posting

mh, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:38 (seventeen years ago)

Panera (and to some extent Corner Bakery) doesn't understand that simply using gourmet ingredients doesn't make food awesome. They're always throwing shit together that's like asiago cheese, wasabi mustard, and roasted red peppers on rosemary-herb focaccia, without stopping to think about whether or not those would actually work well together.

jaymc, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:38 (seventeen years ago)

- I can jam on some Noodles & Co once in a while

^^true but if you're paying for noodles + sauce joke's on you

loool v. true-- but if you kind of make a sandwich the way you want it it's pretty good. they have good breakfast too

J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

au bon pain has started doing that, too.

lauren, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

panera just tastes like it's loaded with trans fat

homosexual II, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:41 (seventeen years ago)

I visit these places mostly in order to appreciate their moderate volume music and nontraditional decor. The food is merely an afterthought...that is, if I order any food at all. Usually I just loiter while glaring menacingly at the patrons and employees until I become subject to forcible ejection from whichever joint I happen to be in at the time.

So, that's all part of why I so love the fast casual experience.

dell, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

and the winner is wahoos fish tacos thx for playin

Hunt3r, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

Boston Market is deece because you can get something fresh and relatively healthy for little money. They stick to tried-and-true foods and do them reasonably well.

Hurting 2, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:46 (seventeen years ago)

Who here has eaten at CHEEBURGER CHEEBURGER?

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:47 (seventeen years ago)

There's one in scenic west Little Rock, but I haven't patronized the place. I hear it's really shitty.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:52 (seventeen years ago)

Also, I hear they serve Coke.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:52 (seventeen years ago)

I have been to Cheeburger Cheeburger, it was OK.

top 5, although I haven't been to much of the rest of the list so this is kinda by default:
Baja Fresh
Panera Bread
Five Guys Burgers & Fries
Chipotle Mexican Grill
Boston Market

the CiCi's commercials always make me hungry but I don't imagine it would be very good.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 17 April 2008 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

cici's is kinda nast except they have a pretty cheap buffet so it's pretty worth it in the end

J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 April 2008 20:09 (seventeen years ago)

gabbneb, Thursday, 17 April 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

Baja Fresh is pretty good. I wish there was one closer to where I live - I have to settle for Qdoba.

o. nate, Thursday, 17 April 2008 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

I'm always a little suspicious of Baja Fresh since their name basically means "sub-fresh."

jaymc, Thursday, 17 April 2008 20:24 (seventeen years ago)

shout for breuggers because their bagels are actually fresh when you gets them. they may not be great bagels but theyre waaaayyy better than the air bagels you get everywhere else.

pei wei is some vile shit

la salsa- surprisingly not bad except for the tiny salsa cups you must deal with

- Spicy Pickle is okay but gives me weird poops
favorite restaurant revue evah

Hunt3r, Thursday, 17 April 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

I'm always a little suspicious of Baja Fresh since their name basically means "sub-fresh."

Good point. OTOH, at least there's no ambiguity about how to pronounce their name (unlike "Qdoba").

o. nate, Thursday, 17 April 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

ok wait, this is still bugging me.

Peter (of famed Peter Tosh) Burrito

All impiousness aside, they have an item called the Peter Burrito?

i don't mind pei wei. their tofu is pressed to an insane amount.

i'm so sick of moe's. (it's a two minute walk from work so...) nice that they have tofu as an option. is it just me, or are the black beans at moe's, qdoba, etc kind of nasty? pinto all the way.

cold stone yum.

i live in central NJ so we only have like three of these. i fucking hate panera, i hate quiznos a little less, and cold stone creamery i'd like to launch into the sun.

i'd kill for ANY faux-mexican chain to come here. we just subway like five years ago and now there are like 10 of them boring up the landscape. fucking new jersey and it's cabal of dumbass city councils that won't let more than one new chain restaurant open every thirty years.
