12.20am Cunt
Nathan Barley purchases a copy of Knees Royale, the debut album from a knowingly lo-fi Westbourne Grove-based band called The Knees, whose music is a thinly-veiled amalgamation of the Strokes and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (yet manages to be precisely one-hundredth as rewarding) and whose CD cover boasts a specially commisioned portrait of the queen wearing a Bomberman helmet, sprayed rebeliously on the wall of a Soho alleyway by dangerous urban street art phenomenon Banksy, whose provocative stencilled images of riot vans and monkeys effortlessly shatter the cosy mindsets of all uptight “normals” who see them, while simultaneously providing a vague sense of inclusive 21st-Century somethingism to the self-orbiting cuntrungs who frequent the kind of gentrified media locales in which is sixth-form wall-splatterings tend to be somewhat conveniently displayed.

caek, Monday, 21 April 2008 01:09 (seventeen years ago)

no option for "would prefer death to either" = no vote, sorry.

Pashmina, Monday, 21 April 2008 09:13 (seventeen years ago)

That Nathan Barley excerpt is essentially this column redux, isn't it?

Matt DC, Monday, 21 April 2008 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

Banksy easily. Nuts is utter shit.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:04 (seventeen years ago)

And not as good as Benny Hill which is saying something.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:04 (seventeen years ago)

Nuts, for sure, but I'm more excited at getting a Brewster's Millions screencap in this thread.

King Boy Pato, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:19 (seventeen years ago)

Banksy's OK

haven't read Nuts

blueski, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:20 (seventeen years ago)

I kind of like some Banksy stuff from a purely aesthetic point of view but everything everyone ever says in his favour beyond "it looks cool" is bullshit to the power of 50 and that puts me off.

Matt DC, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:47 (seventeen years ago)

I honestly can't remember the last time I read anything positive in his favour apart from like under "Heroes" on someone's Myspace or whatever

DJ Mencap, Monday, 21 April 2008 12:58 (seventeen years ago)

what is the point of this comparison anyway? what connection is there between the two? why Nuts?

blueski, Monday, 21 April 2008 13:19 (seventeen years ago)

banriquit, Monday, 21 April 2008 13:20 (seventeen years ago)

can't wait to use that on someone

blueski, Monday, 21 April 2008 13:25 (seventeen years ago)

i kinda like his ed hopper rendition showing a holiday brit throwing a chair at the bar window.
and the ones showing delapitated cars in constable style landscapes

I have nothing positive to say about Nuts on the other hand.

Ste, Monday, 21 April 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)

is there a mirror of that peter dean rickards takedown of banksy anywhere? that's worth a re-read.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 21 April 2008 18:19 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know if that's what you mean?

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 21 April 2008 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

Rickards has quite a few interesting run ins with people!

laxalt, Monday, 21 April 2008 18:36 (seventeen years ago)

Don't diss him -you'll be next!

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 21 April 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

I bet all those guys who designed wacky student humour T-shirts in the late 90s (like a chess piece holding a gun and the slogan "Hardcore Pawn" or something) are kicking themselves they didn't spray their "subversive" ideas all over private property across London.

Bodrick III, Monday, 21 April 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

But they are still advertising them in the back pages of Nuts, right?

Noodle Vague, Monday, 21 April 2008 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

Banksy is mostly considerably more witty than 'hardcore pawn'.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 21 April 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

And more subversive of course. Without the quote marks.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 21 April 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)

How is Banksy's stuff "subversive"? With the quote marks.

Bodrick III, Monday, 21 April 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

Subverts bourgeois notions of being "good", "interesting", etc.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 21 April 2008 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

I can just about buy the idea that working outside of the gallery system and bringing your art into "the public sphere" or whatever is worthwhile, but didn't he sort of ditch all those principles by getting that collector money as soon as he could, like a rat up a drainpipe?

Bodrick III, Monday, 21 April 2008 21:20 (seventeen years ago)

I remember reading an interview with Peter Saville where he says that he hated the visual puns and obvious signifiers you would get on a lot of 70s record covers. He wanted to distance himself from those methods because the average young, hip consumer was more sophisticated than that, had more subtle tastes. Guess he was wrong!

Bodrick III, Monday, 21 April 2008 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

I think good taste can be a real barrier to creativity, but my problems with Banksy aren't about good/bad taste.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 21 April 2008 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

i don't think Saville is wrong there but he's always mined one niche whereas Banksy mines another (obviously tho what with one of them being primarily a designer and one primarily an artist)

blueski, Monday, 21 April 2008 21:41 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

I think Banksy's alright, if overhyped, and has bought more of value to popular culture than Nuts ever has. So there, you post-ironic denizens of the internet.

chap, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:12 (seventeen years ago)

Guys, there's an elephant in the room... no really.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:13 (seventeen years ago)

Here's an idea for a Banksy piece: throwing sh*t at an actual fan. Man, that would blow my mind and make me think about stuff.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:15 (seventeen years ago)

OR OR, what about graffiti that showed Colonel Sanders, but with sunglasses and devil horns, and then it would say KENTUCKY FRIED DEATH below it. Yeah, that would show late capitalism that its days are numbered man.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:17 (seventeen years ago)

Also Steve, I'm not sure about your designer/artist equation with regard to these two.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

i only like the banksy stencils that are totally motivated by their surface/context

blueski, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:39 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 24 April 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for Bizarre magazine but it did not count :(

Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 24 April 2008 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

What's "Nut" magazine?

Mark G, Friday, 25 April 2008 07:57 (seventeen years ago)

It's the National Union of Teachers' monthly journal. Of tits.

Noodle Vague, Friday, 25 April 2008 08:23 (seventeen years ago)

three months pass...

Forget what thread we did the "Tories not really feeling Zoo and Nuts" bump the other week, but here's some awesome whiney effette Liberal bitch handwringing from ex-Nuts editor Phil Hilton.

Incidentally, not to go all HYS on you, but I picked up a copy of Now the other week, and shit is 500 times worse than any banal sub-jazz mag. There was an article suggesting that Amy Winehouse's mother is "playing up" her MS in order to distract from what a bad parent she is.

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 13:22 (seventeen years ago)

was it by you?

blueski, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 13:32 (seventeen years ago)

Mark Ronson articulate?

I mean, he may well be, but particularly?

Mark G, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 13:35 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe he is in comparison to Phil Hilton

Tom D., Tuesday, 12 August 2008 13:37 (seventeen years ago)

ronson is posh. ergo...

stevie, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 13:49 (seventeen years ago)

the girl who snubbed him at the party = heroine

lex pretend, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 14:06 (seventeen years ago)

would like to read the natasha walter book though, it's such an interesting complex topic which is almost never covered interestingly, mags like nuts and zoo are bullshit but getting all ariel levy puritanical on raunch culture isn't really edifying or smart either

lex pretend, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 14:08 (seventeen years ago)

the girl who snubbed him at the party = heroine

No interest in being cap'n save-a-former-Nuts-editor but if I was going to do something like that I'd have to be very assured with myself that my "high up position in publishing" gave me the moral high ground

bumping because Nuts is having a Big Boobs Issue

try to fix the puffiness with some nolva and then go juicin' (gnarly sceptre), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 16:19 (sixteen years ago)

seems somewhat redundant.

languid samuel l. jackson (jim), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 16:21 (sixteen years ago)

boris johnson amirite

sorry for british (country matters), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 16:24 (sixteen years ago)

Isn't that, like, every issue?

snoball, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 16:56 (sixteen years ago)

yep.

try to fix the puffiness with some nolva and then go juicin' (gnarly sceptre), Wednesday, 6 May 2009 20:09 (sixteen years ago)

three years pass...

yet another Nuts 'Big Boobs Special'

it's like Loot having a classified ads special

gnarly_sceptre (+ +), Thursday, 21 March 2013 15:24 (twelve years ago)

there was a letter in Viz a while back congratulating Nuts for having a "Sex issue"

Easter Humphreys (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 21 March 2013 15:44 (twelve years ago)
