The "buddies", despite lacking the frontal lobes needed to develop unique human personalities, are obviously cast as human archetypes. You've got...

Regular Bud
Surfer Brah Bud
Girly Gurl Bud
BLAGN BLANG Gangsta Bud
and...
All American Bud (he likes hot doags and football!@)

Sequels and spin-offs

The movie generated one theater-released sequel and many direct-to-video sequels and a spin-off. In each film, Buddy learns to play a different sport.

The following list indicates the sequel, its position in the series, and which sport is featured in it:

* Air Bud: Golden Receiver (1998) (American football)
* Air Bud: World Pup (2000) (Association football)
* Air Bud: Seventh Inning Fetch (2002) (baseball)
* Air Bud: Spikes Back (2003) (beach volleyball)
* Air Buddies (2006)
* Snow Buddies (2008)
* Space Buddies (2009)
* Air Bud: Aussie Rules (N/A) (rugby)

"FEATURING US SOCCER GREATS: SOME WOMEN"

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

Miscellanea

* The film's plot line bears an uncanny resemblance to that of the 1999 film Soccer Dog, about a soccer-playing dog.

A friend of mine worked on most of the "Air Bud" movies. He described a ritual to me that was most bizarre. Whenever the "Air Bud" golden retriever dies, the newly elected dog must consume its predecessor's carcass before it can be given the title "Air Bud".

But how can you argue, they make magic.

Truth Behind the Film

Air Bud is based on a true incident in Ogden, Utah, in which an up and coming basketball-playing dog was commissioned to play for the Ogden High Mudcats.[3] Their star point guard had recently been horrifically murdered and no one whatsoever was available to stand in for the big game against their crosstown rivals, the Ogden Prep Wildcats.[4] The Framm family offered their dog who had shown considerable talent while playing basketball against their mentally and physically handicapped son. Later, the dog that played Air Bud, also named Air Bud, suffered from acute scabies, and unfortunately had to be taken out back and shot.[5]

I'm so fucking there for Air Bud: Aussie Rules - "mate, who let that fucking mongrel on the oval" and so on.

King Boy Pato, Thursday, 24 April 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

Unless it really is a dog playing rugby and not Australian Rules Footy, then I won't give a shit.

Maybe it's a dog playing whatever that sport is that's a cross between Gaelic and Aussie Rules football.

There's something unnervingly Juggalo about bottom right, though I still voted for him. I am jealous of that hot dog.

I want an Air Bud movie that's like Russkies where a borzoi joins the team, is initially mistrusted, but after some completely adorable cultural misunderstandings and charming broken English the borzoi makes an excellent pass that helps the main Air Buddy headbutt the ball into the goal, and they win by a nose.
