Is it possible to get divorced without paying four-figure sums of money to a lawyer? As my case is pretty much uncontested - and we've been separated for two years now - I wonder if it's just a matter of signing some papers and sending them to the powers-that-be. If I go ahead without a lawyer, will it prove expensive and problematic in the long run?

Are you in the UK? I'll assume so.

Yes, in a way, then. You can agree everything between you and take it to a lawyer each who submits. That's about as cheap as you can get, although you will have to agree EVERYTHING you can think of. (To be honest, however, if it's as simple as you think then it may be worth hiring one anyway since it will only be an exchange of a couple of letters and shouldn't cost much.)

I'm unsure where you think the expense and problems might come from in the future though?

I got one without a lawyer. I just signed the papers and the cost was minimal. This was in Australia, things may differ in the UK.

Thanks for your answers, people.

Yes, I'm in the UK. I don't foresee any specific future complications, aldo. I was just wondering if there were any hidden problems for people striking out alone, without a lawyer.
