Doctor Who : Best Episode In Tom Baker's 3rd Season

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 25 April 2008 13:10 (seventeen years ago)

Peladon, though I've only seen the first three serials here.

A bit more cut and dried, this one. Between Day and Sea Devils, although the Mutants isn't that bad. I've never liked The Time Monster.

Sea Devils is sloooow.

chap, Friday, 25 April 2008 13:23 (seventeen years ago)

It's great

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 25 April 2008 15:15 (seventeen years ago)

Sea Devils, for the music alone. And Clangers.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 28 April 2008 10:24 (seventeen years ago)

Bump

The book of Day of the Daleks is really good, but, as with a lot of Pertwee stories, the actual TV version is a bit meh.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 12:03 (seventeen years ago)

Never read any of the books but Pertwee as the dr is anything but meh

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 14:46 (seventeen years ago)

Acquired taste though - when I first started watching the Pertwees I thought he was a bit of a bog standard 70s action man, it's only after a few you realise he's actually very wry.

Pertwee was my first Doctor... I think he's great. James Bond as Edwardian adventurer.

James Morrison, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 00:53 (seventeen years ago)

As I said elsewhere before, it was seeing Pertwee on UK Gold some years back that got me into Dr Who.

Haha, did he just actually yell "Aikido Kick!" ?

Also, unambitious stage direction: when you have your well-matched dandy hero & aristrocratic villain finally just fighting it out with sabers, you give them a small hallway and stair landing. Oh yeah, and the sequence only lasts about 90 seconds.

It ain't exactly Errol Flynn, or even "Duel of the Fates."

Also, military guard sidekick has a cape(cloak?) with a full-on Vader chain.

And I've decided that my theme for this week's zombiewalk will be "Zombie Brigadier." Where the hell am I going to find a tan officer's jacket in America? Did they ever actually have American officers' duds in tan?

Katy Manning looks much better without the Rod Stewart hairstyle.

And nothing better to traverse minefields than in a dinner suit and cape or a white pantsuit

A model of a submarine was created by purchasing a Woolworth's submarine model kit and then altering the propeller. However, by chance, the alterations to the model strongly resembled an actual proto-type submarine developed by the Ministry of Defense. After footage of the model was broadcast as part of the story, producer Barry Letts received a visit from two Ministry of Defense officials, who were concerned that the footage was of the proto-type.

...

Didn't something like this happen like the day after Hunt for Red October was published, where Tom Clancy found two FBI men on his doorstep wondering exactly where he'd gotten all the info?

Also, never use the same exact synth(s) to do both your incidental music _and_ your sound effects. One can't tell it if's just random plinking and plonking of if something's actually happened.

Oh far out; now they're going to have a chase on proto-jet-skis; five years before _The Spy Who Loved Me_ even

The Sea Devils is so awesome.

Watching "The Time Monster". One of the things this show did/does well is that even with dodgy effects is that all you need is a clever idea and good characters to make for a compelling story. I give you the example of the two Tardises trapped inside each other, and the Doctor and the Master happily fucking with each other.

Also, Jo's knee/thigh-high boots are awesome, and more companions should wear them.

Watching 'Frontier in Space' now. I do like how every Delgado story has both the Master and the Doctor being forced to work together to solve or deal with whatever problem they've encountered that particular time.

Also enjoying how the Draconians look like more convincing aliens than like half the races on ST:TNG did 2 decades later with like 10x the budget per ep.

And Jo Grant has some massive ass platform shoes this time round.

Frontier in Space isn't bad at all, the closest Who story I've seen to a proper space opera. I couldn't make it through the follow-up Dalek story though.

Good Lord, I used "like" 3x in a single sentence, a new drunkposting record.

two weeks pass...

Am now shotgunning his final season and watching 'Invasion of the Dinosaurs.' Why was it always so easy to spot Peter Miles showing up in some supporting role? Even when he popped up in an ep of Blake's 7, you could get but a quick glance and hear his voice and just respond, "Hey, it's Nyder!"

Also, it's interesting that they finally had some MP or minister/bigwig show up and the Doctor actually being appreciative of his presence, instead of just another bureaucratic nuisance.

oh no! Double-crossed again! by someone in authority whom they thought they could trust! who woulda thunk it!

A great story with some seriously rubbish dinosaur special effects. Love the deserted London stuff.
