Wii Exercise? Oh rly?

Everywhere has it.

The idea that a 'video game machine' can actually be good for your fitness seems to have been kicked off from getting knackered playing tennis with the special raquet 'strap-on'.

I saw one place that had it for £30 but you had to trade in your Guitar Hero 3 kit (with the guitar) to get it for that.

Elsewhere £60-£70.

So, will it save us all?

The lovely Emma B said "oh, another excuse to stay indoors!" I told her to hep up, grandma.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 28 April 2008 10:02 (seventeen years ago)

The lovely Emma B needs exercise?

(actually, don't answer that)

Mark G, Monday, 28 April 2008 10:05 (seventeen years ago)

Everybody needs exercise!

Nah. I have had the PS2's Eye-Toy Kinetic for ages. It works, when I can be bothered to move the furniture out of the way.

stevienixed, Monday, 28 April 2008 12:23 (seventeen years ago)

DG, Monday, 28 April 2008 12:26 (seventeen years ago)

how about Wii Guantanamo

Tracer Hand, Monday, 28 April 2008 12:30 (seventeen years ago)

Doesn't the Wii version of Manhunt 2 let you use the Wiimote to saw people's heads off or somesuch?

Alba, Monday, 28 April 2008 12:48 (seventeen years ago)

Funnily enough, all are unavailable once again...

Mark G, Monday, 28 April 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

how about Wii Guantanamo

i think there's a gap in the market for this

DG, Monday, 28 April 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

I went in a video game store this weekend and clerk dude was all exasperated. Everyone asking about Wii Fit, and he'd say, "It's NOT OUT here yet. It's only available in Japan!" and they'd say, "I'll just get it online." Like five people in the fifteen minutes I was there. "You won't be able to read any of it!" he shouted at one as they walked out the door.

Abbott, Monday, 28 April 2008 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

it's out here and the ads are on telly all the time, but can you even pre-order one at the mo? NO. all out.

I want to meet a person who takes their fitness advice from IGN.

watching people do the hula on it = k-classic

Alan, Monday, 19 May 2008 09:36 (seventeen years ago)

Stevie, you're thinking about boom blox and it's fun for a few days, no doubt.
Girl got VERY excited when I said I was willing to go do the opening day wiifit pickup at Rock Center. I ain't gonna front; I'll be playing too, but it's mostly for her.
Line was about a block long, wait was about an hour and I could've gotten there at nine instead of 8:30 and been fine. We'll see how this thing plays tonight.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 19 May 2008 14:05 (seventeen years ago)

Aw, that was nice of you.

Abbott, Monday, 19 May 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

I have my rare moments.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 19 May 2008 19:54 (seventeen years ago)

how about you just get a gym membership you lazy fuxs

cutty, Monday, 19 May 2008 19:56 (seventeen years ago)

Already got one duder! That and puppy running keep me mid-sleek; the girl is doing three time a week personal training. This is less of a weight loss device and more of a (hopefully) fun thing to play with.

I used to be a trainer myself back in the day and based on what I know about the basics of the exercise, it's all pretty solid stuff. Admittedly, you could do the same stuff with a trainer and a block of wood, but that's way more expensive and presumably less fun. I'll be curious to see if this becomes part of mine and the gal's daily routine for the next month or two.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 19 May 2008 20:07 (seventeen years ago)

"Some of the games allow the player to watch TV while getting instructions or rhythm through the Wii Remote speaker."

ok, this is of interest

forksclovetofu, Monday, 19 May 2008 20:09 (seventeen years ago)

uh dude, when did the wii ex become something for health reasons. cutty, dude, it's for FUN.

a gym membership is some twisted expensive idea to have some arsehole tell you to do 68486787 pushups. i can do that on my own thankyouverymuch.

that said, i have a tennis membership. i have some arsehole tell me i have to run after a ball and hit it. kinda dumb as well cause that ball just keeps coming back.

stevienixed, Monday, 19 May 2008 20:10 (seventeen years ago)

however, wtf:
Wii Fit also allows a player to keep track of activities outside of the game, which are then added on to the player's activity log, but not included in the daily exercise time. These are divided into three categories:

* Light - guitar, piano, stretching.
* Medium - cleaning, gardening, walking.
* Heavy - sports such as soccer, tennis, swimming.

"guitar"?

forksclovetofu, Monday, 19 May 2008 20:11 (seventeen years ago)

If this gets people to exercise, that's totally rad.

Abbott, Monday, 19 May 2008 20:12 (seventeen years ago)

I think criticisms like 'lol video game why don't you buy a private gym and trainer' are uh wtf.

Abbott, Monday, 19 May 2008 20:13 (seventeen years ago)

cleaning? wtf.

dude, i think they mean wanking.

stevienixed, Monday, 19 May 2008 20:13 (seventeen years ago)

how about you just get a law degree you lazy fuxs

jeff, Monday, 19 May 2008 20:17 (seventeen years ago)

When "Wii LSAT" comes out, maybe.

Abbott, Monday, 19 May 2008 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

This is actually kind of fun. The strength exercises are all about doing shit slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowly, so you're jackknifing six times in about a minute.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 05:26 (seventeen years ago)

piano: one of the most sedentary things you can do?

tehresa, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 05:52 (seventeen years ago)

hmmm so forks should i invest in this for while i'm home a lot during job-search phase? gotta beat watching the tyra show, right?

tehresa, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 05:53 (seventeen years ago)

Oh man, if only Wii Fit had trashy cable picture-in-picture.

Abbott, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 05:54 (seventeen years ago)

tza, i imagine at the very least it would be good for sense of accomplishment. Good luck finding one, tho'.

And i repeat: "Some of the games allow the player to watch TV while getting instructions or rhythm through the Wii Remote speaker."

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 06:11 (seventeen years ago)

wait so it's not just a disc, you have to buy platform? $$$$$$$$

tehresa, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 06:31 (seventeen years ago)

I'm nackrd this morning!

Mark G, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 06:55 (seventeen years ago)

I think a half hour of this daily in conjunction with paying a bit more attention to your diet and a three-time-a-week sport/gym visit/heavy jog would make a pretty serious change in your body. Actually looking to going home and playing with this!

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

Just think what you would have said to someone five years ago that one day Nintendo would make a Yoga game, and that it would fly off the shelves all over the world

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

I had to sold my Wii so I will unfortunately miss out on this :-(

But I would re-buy for the forthcoming Wii Music.

four months pass...

shit is pretty dope, i think this justified my while-ago-wii-purchase for my wife

five months pass...

I got one of these for my birthday. I'm not expecting miracles, but as an adjunct to some walking and crunches and cutting back on booze that I'm also doing, I at least want to get some core strength/balance back - I'm supposed to wear orthotics and havent been for some years and everything's slowly going out of whack.

Plus it's distractingly fun and I can do it at home every evening - a gym is a waste of time as I can find *every* excuse not to go. The loungeroom is right there all the time.

I'll just say this. My wife got the Wii Fit back in January and I decided to give it a shot and actually lost about 17 pounds. Of course that is combined with smarter eating, but still, the motivation to walk into the living room was much easier to get than to get all ready and head to the gym. I've since gained some of that back since I quit working out when my studying ramped up, but I plan to get back into using it every day.

legendary North American forest ape (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 23 March 2009 03:02 (sixteen years ago)

That gives me some extra motivation! :)

My fitness levels - which were poor to begin with - have dipped sharply due to ongoing leg and foot problems I've always had that are just getting worse as I age, its a spiral that makes exercise difficult (and I cant swim, so thats out too). Couple that with a little more booze than a good girl should consume and BAM.

I gotta do something before I end up looking like Andy Serkis :(

one art, please (Trayce), Monday, 23 March 2009 03:57 (sixteen years ago)

A decent additional purchase (if you have the Wii Fit and board) is Shaun White Snowboarding. My wife is well into the yoga, step etc on Wii Fit, but I rapidly lost interest - whereas Shaun White is stacked with challenge in a much more obviously gamey way and gets pretty difficult.

Not sure it does much in the way of aerobics, but all the bending, crouching and leaning certainly makes my legs ache after an extended play session, which is doing some good, rite?

eight months pass...

LOL I didnt get far after that last post ;_;

I've just picked this back up again and now i'm trying the yoga as well. It is kicking my ASS, I have weak legs and terrible balance/posture.

millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Sunday, 6 December 2009 03:16 (fifteen years ago)

I got DDR for the Wii in the vague hope it would get me some exercise. It does, and it's loads fun, but the 'workout mode' is depressing in that it shows you how few calories each song burns (about 3 :( )
