"Hey Kel!

I know you guys were huge Crank fans so I got the lowdown on how Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) survives into the sequel and what exactly they put into him.

After an 8-bit video game intro sequence, Crank: High Voltage, begins with Chev slamming down into the ground. Since his heart was already super accelerated on adrenaline…he miraculously and implausibly survived.

Asian gangsters in a black van arrive on the scene and scrape Chelios off the ground. They toss him inside the van and take off before the authorities and emergency personnel arrive.

Three months later, in an operating room, Chev awakens MID SURGERY strapped down on an operating table. He can’t move or speak. His chest is split open! Chinese doctors remove his heart while the bad guy Johnny Vang watches. The doctor’s ooooh and aaaahh at the site of “The Chelios Heart.” It gets placed in a red igloo cooler. A nurse brings over a futuristic looking artificial heart made from clear flex plastic, black rubber and metal. Chelios passes out again for another three weeks.

Chev reawakens at a Chinese massage parlor in Long Beach and makes his escape in the movies first action sequence. He then gets the lowdown on his heart from DOC MILES (Dwight Yoakam).

Chev has been outfitted with an ABIOCOR TOTAL ARTIFICIAL HEART. It has an internal battery that will pick up once the battery belt dies. It’s like a reserve tank but only good for one hour.

The Abiocor is designed to keep you alive only for a couple of days while waiting for a transplant. It is not built for strenuous activity.

The internal battery charges wirelessly through the transcutaneous energy transfer system – two coils, one internal and one external that transmit power via magnetic force across the skin without piercing the surface. The internal coil receives the power and sends it to the controller device. Basically Chev has to keep his body electrically charged to keep his ticker running. Whereas in the first movie he needed adrenaline to stay alive, in Crank: High voltage he needs jolts of electricity to stay alive."

yeah crank was a perfect action movie in a lot of ways but it aimed for the dbag crowd a little too often imo. still awesome of course.

I was referencing the ILX thread with the phrase "racially awkward."

Really it was just that LITERALLY NO ONE on screen could be non-white and get away without some lame joke being made about their race. It was like stereotypes on parade.

The first movie was kind of disappointing but if that poster means that there will be monty python: holy grail/dead parrot jokes all throughout could mean redemption!

I think it's only become noticable when movies do it the whole time, like Fast And/Or Furious and Bourne Identity and XXX and Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life and Resident Evil: Degeneration X and shit

I definitely agree about the (let's face it) racist stuff, as much as I enjoyed Crank anyway for its goofy violence and general ridiculousness. That's part of the reason I'm gonna try to see the movie in the middle of the week with as small an audience as possible.

(because of the audience that I expect will show up opening weekend, if it wasn't clear)

this wasn't as good as the first one. Really ranched up the violence, tits, mutilation, swearing, etc. but just wasn't quite as entertaining. Still this series is the only thing bringing really 00s retardo action, other action movies just look like the 90s with fancier effects.

"Chicken and broccoli" just before the limo he's in crashes is one of the most amazingly wtf pieces of genius ever. Also referring to his heart as his "strawberry tart" was decent.

not as good as the first. i actually couldn't believe how violent it was, there was some stuff that was beyond 'hostel' in this. entertaining i guess but i dunno, i'm kinda getting over shit that's aiming this low.

the racist stuff was still a little 0_o for the first 20 minutes or so, but as it dragged on it was just SO over the top (and coming in every direction, from every ethnic group) that i didn't know how to take it. like one of those '40s comedies with the dialogue on continual fast-forward but where every other word was a racist epithet.

also not sure if i've laughed as hard (the climax of the race track scene!), intentionally, not in a so-bad-abandon-all-hope sense, at anything that wasn't marketed as an outright comedy this decade.

but then i am just a sucker for OTT violent spectacle that isn't a bunch of incoherently staged/framed cgi explosions and slo-mo bullet arcs.

I love how the music in this is basically a metal band covering the "Get Carter" theme.

then I watched Crank 2 with her and was so embarrassed that I couldn't really enjoy it

i was just flicking thru movie channels, caught the racetrack scene, then his arse disappeared for a second and i gained control of the remote again. sheer evil.
