So, like who is cooler? the Fonz may be an awesome dude, but if I wanted to trust someone to get something done, I'd choose TC.

top cat did the no pants thing: if the fonz tried that, heeeey! not cool [q0p]

[that 's the emoticon for two thumbs down btw] [i just invented it]

But didn't you just want them to fail? Especially the Fonz? He was presumably supposed to be in Richie/Pottsy/Ralph's peer group, but seemed to be about fifteen years older, like a sad mature student attempting a smooth transition into mid-life crisis by staying in halls and annually retaking his exams. Remember that one where he tries to get everyone into classical music, it doesn't work, and he has to admit he was wrong, but he's so cool he can't say the word 'wrong'? I just wanted to beat it out of him.

And on a related theme, is there anyone who didn't actually will Wile E Coyote to catch, kill, roast and savour that smug bastard Road Runner?

(mark, U have to dislocate yr wrists to do 2 thumbs down like that)

[before i read mark's explanation i assumed that the icon somehow represented the fonz's tackle]

Top Cat (bd) becuz he is kinda bad plus has cooler friends (even the stoner one) plus he is cartoon beatnik which is always coool-schmool. dig?

ducklingmonster, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

six months pass...
TC is cooler, if only for exposing the inadequacies of the Police Department.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

bilko is cooler still

chris (chris), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I HATE Top Cat. Smug bastard CAT. My mum does too, she once agreed to vote w/me for whichever party had the strongest stand AGAINST Top Cat.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, but what's with the whole top cat / boss cat thing? identity crisis is hardly cool. or am i just getting confused with something else?

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Top Cat was the name of a cat food sold in the UK, so they had to change the name of the cartoon over here.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

i'll go with the fonz. he ain't named after no frickin' kitty chow.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

It would be kinda great if the Fonx wandered out of the toilets in Al's going "Ehhhhh!" w/NO PANTS ON. There's a "True Hollywood Story" moment. Hopefully.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:42 (twenty-three years ago)

boss cat influenced bruce springsteen

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

BRUCE should try coming onstage w/NO PANTS as well! "The Rising" indeed, arrrr.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Good old Bruce "The Top" Springsteen. I am not holding that against the great Top Cat. It seems like years since any of these were on TV, or am I just watching the wrong channels?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

totally Martin! happy days was on at 9am on channel 4 last week, and I saw top cat pretty recently too!

I forgot that I asked this question.

Personally, I think they are both great, as they are part of the same eternal cool guy multi-being.

five years pass...

I guess Top Cat is supposed to be a Phil Silvers/Bilko character, but he sounds more like Tony Curtis doing Cary Grant in Some Like It Hot.

It looks like the voice is done by Arnold Stang. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World!

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 15 October 2007 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

Here on WFMU's Beware Of The Blog is an incredibly detailed and entertaining rundown of Arnold Stang's career. It will probably take me a week to read it.
