Last Friday, April 16, 1943, I was forced to interrupt my work in the laboratory in the middle of the afternoon and proceed home, being affected by a remarkable restlessness, combined with a slight dizziness. At home I lay down and sank into a not unpleasant intoxicated condition, characterized by an extremely stimulated imagination. In a dreamlike state, with eyes closed (I found the daylight to be unpleasantly glaring), I perceived an uninterrupted stream of fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colors. After some two hours this condition faded away.

Now, little by little I could begin to enjoy the unprecedented colors and plays of shapes that persisted behind my closed eyes. Kaleidoscopic, fantastic images surged in on me, alternating, variegated, opening and then closing themselves in circles and spirals, exploding in colored fountains, rearranging and hybridizing themselves in constant flux.

His book is total genius. Still never tried his drug.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 09:34 (seventeen years ago)

Ditto, though I've been gently encouraged to by various friends. Maybe some day.

"I've got a bike,
You can ride it if you like
It's got a basket, a bell that rings
And things to make it look good
I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it "

fwiw, Huxley was taking mescalin, not LSD.

As for Dr. Hoffman, few men can claim to have discovered a drug that changed society. He could -- even if it he was beholden to the ergot fungus, which did most of the original work. His writings make him seem like one of the better sorts of scientist, curious, thoughtful, pleasant, humble.

Cary Grant & Acid

C. Grisso/McCain, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

On his deathbed, unable to speak, Huxley made a written request to his wife for "LSD, 100µg, intramuscular.". According to her account of his death (in her book This Timeless Moment), she obliged with an injection at 11:45 am and another a couple of hours later.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 17:51 (seventeen years ago)

Of course he also took Mescalin, but, y'know, pedantry.
