My father was a minister and I used to go and hug him, as a child, and I remember the smell of his robes. At the same time, in childhood, I remember going into my mother's closet and just loving burying my face in her dresses. they all smelled so good! it was sort of like an introduction to adulthood.

The brief, quizzical scent, as I mowed the listless blades of grass sweltering amidst the summertime heat, for which there appeared to be no repose offered by man nor at the same time by some ineluctable fortitude of divine grace, revealed to me a vision of trudging through the soft loam dispersed along the side of the hidden pond of my youth, the robins nuzzling and branches of adjacent trees quivering as if conjured by some thaumaturge's spry wink,....
....uh, where was I again?

Proustian? Isn't that where you're either stretched on a rack or hacked off at the ankles in order to fit some ogre's one-size-fits-all bed?

This thread title thinks it's sooooo smart, doesn't it?
We have to think of a new way to reference the phenomenon of involuntary nostalgia, especially from tastes or smells, because "Proustian" is overused as this highbrow-but-not-really reference and suddenly everybody who's watched an HBO series lately is qualified to toss out winking little tiddles from French literature. Uh huh.
*deep breath* That said, I had a moment last week. Somehow -- don't know how -- but somehow I had managed to not listen to or think about the original Artificial Intelligence compilation for a really long time. Eight, ten years since I'd given it a good listen, maybe? And it's nice, and it's pretty solid, but when "The Egg" by Autechre came on, I was completely lost in time. Two things hit me, really: omg I should call Jeff and see if he wants to see a movie or something... oh wait, I haven't talked to him in 11 years; and also this song hasn't lost an ounce of whatever it had in 1992. Awesome.
(None of that is really Proustian, tho.)

If it's granny's house, for me it's Diorissimo and rice-stuffed chickens.

Diesel fumes on a cold day--takes me back to skiiing trips when I was a kid, everybody piling into a crappy old coach for 10-hour trips to the snowfields, wearing 80s parkas, etc etc.
