Things That Rule About Melbourne: A List

-> A reasonably planned inner-city layout (I shan't touch anything further out).
-> A decent pub culture.
-> Sunsets over the skyline from a rooftop somewhere in Fitzroy.
-> Richmond's laneways and hidden artefacts of a roguish past.
-> The Vic Market, in terms of meat and produce.
-> Long summer afternoons at the Corner Hotel rooftop bar.
-> Lambsgo Bar, a temple to beer.
-> Walking through the streets of Carlton on a winter afternoon in a big black jacket.
-> A wide selection of cuisines on offer that are generally of better quality than inner-city counterparts.
-> The Age.
-> The Boomtown architecture of the 1880's largely in place.

The fact that the sick, desperate and the damned can be quarantined effectively by dynamiting the bridges over the Yarra River (that no madman would be game to wade through).

"Walking through the streets of Carlton....."

I'm a Melb Uni ex-inmate and a Carlton supporter, and dead east from Princes Park up and down those long narrow N-S streets with the traffic islands in the middle is a whole mass of memories from living round there in the 80s (when you could still afford it), and at least the developers (so far) have been told to leave their more macho ideas for the area at home. But Lygon Street is pretty well rooted, and the 'Black Hole of Calcutta' created by that monstrosity at the east end of PP adds nothing.

- Carlton FC
- These magical vehicles that run on a regular basis and take you up the road and you don't have to pay any money to go on them which the locals call a "tram".
- Happiness in the knowledge that once upon a time there were great quasi-socialist brutalist triumphs like the Gas & Fuel Towers and Spencer Street Station (the latter especially with the 1980s green and orange V/Line livery) before Kennett and Bracks had to ruin everything.
- Corner Hotel!
- Adopted home city of the greatest man alive.
- The Flemington tube in the CityLink is always fun to go through, no matter how many times its shown in commercials for family sedans (and I will be going through it tomorrow on morning on my way from the airport).
- It's not Adelaide.

The vic market totally rullz- I remember finishing the night shift and going to get some unpasteurized roquefort (it was during that time when it wasn't illegal)and figs stuffed with mascarpone at 6am- I live in Perth now (why?) and there are a good places but the vic is like an awesome ikea food superstore of good.
