does this really improve your posture? i am doing it right now, at the computer. it's been like two minutes.
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 03:49 (seventeen years ago)
my physical therapist told me to try it. i can't tell if it is just working because my skull is bumpy though
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 03:51 (seventeen years ago)
ha!
― elan, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 03:51 (seventeen years ago)
how much of a weirdo will i look like if i do it at work?
bell labs i think i have told u this before but do pushups seriously, afterwards u will feel tuff instead of prissy! this can only be a good thing psychologically & posturelogically both
― deeznuts, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 03:52 (seventeen years ago)
i have been doing a routine of stuff but i feel like pushups would put to much stress on my neck, which is why i am trying to correct my posture in the first place
THE BOOK IS STILL ON MY HEAD like 5 minutes
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 03:54 (seventeen years ago)
dman it fell
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 03:55 (seventeen years ago)
it is a GRE vocabulary word book hello failed ambitions
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 03:56 (seventeen years ago)
remember, you can't spell failure without an "i"
― omar little, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 03:57 (seventeen years ago)
so true.
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 03:57 (seventeen years ago)
LOLs I don't know why but I love this thread
― RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 03:59 (seventeen years ago)
taking a sip of wine while balancing a book on your head is very hard.
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 04:00 (seventeen years ago)
oh god the liquor stores closed an hour ago. I really slept in today.
― RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 04:02 (seventeen years ago)
deeznuts i have been doing "corner stretches" instead of pushups but my upper arm strength is fine.
i still haven't mastered sipping drink and book on head
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 04:07 (seventeen years ago)
i dunno what corner stretches are, but it sounds like we got different issues - my tension is located in the upper back, & pushups seem to stretch & strengthen that area perfectly, which is not to say i dont still frequently need to pop it
i havent had neck problems so i dunno what theyre like but i would imagine that if i had them i would just rotate & shift my neck a helluva lot, although i guess i get the balancing book thing too (tensing & strengthening the appropriate muscles)
― deeznuts, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 04:18 (seventeen years ago)
it's about posture and alignment apparently, for me. and also getting other muscles to chill out. the balancing is supposed to teach my spine what it needs to do to be a normal spine.
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 04:22 (seventeen years ago)
and the book thing is what most girls did as teenagers? whatever. i will teach myself their coltish, straight-spined ways.
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 04:24 (seventeen years ago)
i dunno about anyone else but i would eagerly participate in a live ilx book-balancing honor system showdown, someone set a date & time plz
― deeznuts, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 04:34 (seventeen years ago)
Underneath these swaying locks, skull like a barn roof. So unless there's a better way to improve your posture within the comfort of your own home, my slouch is permanent. All you flat headers can find an island somewhere where you can have your straight spined utopia with ice cream and fun. I'll be fine here.
― Jacob, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 04:38 (seventeen years ago)
maybe i should this try cuz i have some serious neck/posture issues: it is a vicious circle of bad posture=sore neck (oh, and carrying a shitload of heavy pasta plates on one arm 5 nights a week) but actually trying to correct it really hurts so posture just worsens.
i've been thinking that maybe back strengthening exercises (maybe combined with stomach-muscle-strengthening exercises) might help a lot.
but i'm pretty lazy.
― Rubyredd, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 04:40 (seventeen years ago)
once you get this deportment matter sorted out you will be ilx's loveliest debutante, bell_labs<3.
― estela, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 04:40 (seventeen years ago)
FOR THE COMPETITION i would be awesmome until it came to the drinking or taking the subway conpetition kept awake by donuts and/or soy ice cream' but i would try very hard, i have a competitiveness streak k!
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 04:42 (seventeen years ago)

"i've been thinking that maybe back strengthening exercises (maybe combined with stomach-muscle-strengthening exercises) might help a lot."
^^ PUSHUPS!!! with some crunches thrown in
these are prob the two most basic, simple exercises known to man & they work wonders. ask herschel walker!
― deeznuts, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 04:46 (seventeen years ago)
whoa this is intense! I tried it with http://mitpress.mit.edu/images/products/books/0262062666-f30.jpg I did not go to architecture school, so it fell off.
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 04:46 (seventeen years ago)
ya i am srs about the book balancing competition if anyone wants to arrange it, bell labs will likely kick my ass but whatever i can take it
how about tomorrow 8pm EST
i will be on comp tuning into wfmu who wants a piece
― deeznuts, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 04:50 (seventeen years ago)
deeznuts otm about push-ups and crunching
― Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 04:50 (seventeen years ago)
upper back exercises pull yer shoulders back and hence are superlative
― Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 04:52 (seventeen years ago)
okay i might actually try this.
what about lower back? i have this tender spot just above my tailbone and my whole lower back aches on a pretty constant basis, bending over really hurts. will pushups help this too?
― Rubyredd, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 04:55 (seventeen years ago)
jesus sometimes i feel like i'm 78 not 28
I had two books for about ten minutes. Felt good.
― Hurting 2, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 04:56 (seventeen years ago)
Ruby go to an osteo, that sounds dodgy.
― Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 05:58 (seventeen years ago)
What do you do if your back is over-arched? ie I dont slump so much as have too much of a sway back, so when I stand for more than about half an hour the base of my back starts to seize up... fucking makes going to see bands absolute hell and I'm so sick of it ;_;
Sit ups maybe?
― Trayce, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 06:14 (seventeen years ago)
(I should point out that I have pretty major issues with misaligned hips and legs and am knock kneed and am meant to wear orthotics in my shoes and never do so maybe posting all this on ilx is pointless lol oh well anyway)
RR you should swim - v. good for lower back
― sunny successor, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)
lol at bunch of msg board posters complaining about bad backs
― G00blar, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:04 (seventeen years ago)
So much is solved by lengthening the spine/supporting the torso and letting the shoulders fall down and back, instead of hunching or raising them. It gives you a very open & forward ribcage, though, and girls often learn/are taught not to stand confidently because they get a rack early, feel self-conscious, want to avoid attention, want to avoid confrontation, and so on. Suxors.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:06 (seventeen years ago)
aw poor girls and their racks, try living with a penis
― cutty, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)
try balancing a book with your penis, even
getting a rack early was definitely not my problem lol
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)
i had trouble getting a rack early.
― chicago kevin, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)
is everyone still up for a bookbalancer competition? how about 6'oclock ET tonight?
― deeznuts, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)
pushups aren't hard on your neck.
i'm doing this! i am using isaac asimov's "the complete robot", which seems appropriate somehow.
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)
i hope all you people are using hardcover books, otherwise you are filthy cheaters and not proper ladies at that
― elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)
yeah we need to use somewhat equivalent books in terms of size...how many pages is the complete robot & is it hardcover or soft?
― deeznuts, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:19 (seventeen years ago)
i wish i could do this at work without people thinking i am weird. i did it whlie watching tv last night and i think it's helping a little.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:19 (seventeen years ago)
we need to standardize book size -- everyone go out and steal a gideon bible. it's for spinal health.
― elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:21 (seventeen years ago)
wonder if it would hamper my gta playing.
― ledge, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:21 (seventeen years ago)
bell labs basically has to be in on this for it to mean anything, when do you get off work?
― deeznuts, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:21 (seventeen years ago)
i was planning on using this 'major british writers vol II' book i have, its hardcover & 880 pages, is that overkill?
― deeznuts, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:23 (seventeen years ago)
687 pages, softcover - but to make up for its softcoverness the jacket is very SLICK!!!
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:23 (seventeen years ago)
i don't know when i get off work tonight probably 6-7ish? and i'm going out afterwards possibly so i dunno.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)
we can do an exhibition tonight i guess so if you dont make it, no big deal, & that will give the rest of us some solid experience
i really dont think softcover should be allowed btw
― deeznuts, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:29 (seventeen years ago)
^^ every new york conversation ever
xpost bah
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)
i just realised i've been doing this with a level head but usual slumped back/shoulders :/
― ledge, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)
Look, I have slight scoliosis and I can keep a book on my head for ages, walking randomly around the house, making cups of tea, going up and down stairs, any activity really except for sitting in front of a keyboard...so I don't think it's great for posture necessarily.
Hand, wait, have you ever seen me do this? If we still want to play this I could probably do at least 10 straight minutes. Mah books - 2008 page-per-day leatherbound diary or the larger The Audacity of Hope h/c.
― suzy, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:39 (seventeen years ago)
There are no books within reach so I am balancing the STALKER game box on my head. The problem is that I can't touch type very well so I keep having to look down at the keyboard.
