This is a thread for any thoughts on said tunnel.
When the L-train stops or crawls between 1st and Bedford, as it so frequently does, I have near-panic attacks . My heart rate goes up, my system is flooded with adreneline, and I have to close my eyes and pretend I am somewhere else. Feeling is compounded when the train is crowded. The idea of evacuating the train is terrifying--the distance between the subway and the wall is very narrow, and combined with people in front of and behind, moving very slowly, not to mention the river above and the thought of a flooded tunnel...agh!
Those are my thoughts on the L-tunnel. What do you think?

train stopping just means i get to read more blah blah blah. i never take the L at peak hours though thank god.
― ian, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:52 (seventeen years ago)
when people react like this, I wonder if they ever do any research and find that 99.9999% of the time nothing goes awry
― AJ Styles, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:55 (seventeen years ago)
You could always move to live on a train that goes over a bridge. Unless you also have a fear of heights and being stuck in a stopped train on a swaying suspension tightrope.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)
OTOH at least the scenery is always awesome.
taking Q every morning >>>>> taking L every morning.

AJ Styles, there's nothing rational about it, that's what makes it a phobia.

Does anyone want to recommend a better bike route to Tribeca from Williamsburg than Delancey or Canal?
Then why are you going to bars for 20 somethings?
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 18:00 (seventeen years ago)
if you need me I'll be on the V
― AJ Styles, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 18:00 (seventeen years ago)
to be fair, phobias generally have nothing to do with what actually happens 99.9999% of the time.
i don't like being in train tunnels, period, but there's not always an alternative.

― lauren, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 18:00 (seventeen years ago)
The best mornings were at the Lorimer stop when the L would be 45 minutes late so the platform would be crowded with hundreds of people ... then you'd fight your way through the crowd to take the G to the E, and then you'd fight your way through the crowds on the E train coming in from Queens. Good stuff, never doing that again.

P.S. I would settle for two of this tent, connected via the larger door:

Wanna know an even scarier tunnel to go through. The First Street Amtrak Train Tunnel that goes under and beside the US Capitol in DC. I heard that tunnel snakes and curves and goes straight before curving again. I heard that even grown men have panic attacks going under that place which is said to be about 60 feet below sea level. TO compound it, even if you are caught glancing at it's mouth, the Federal Po-po will drive up in full force(inclusig in SWAT uniforms) and badger you on why you would even be near it's mouth( In spite of it being parallel to a walkway )
