I will now document the countdown to my California Bar Exam results (Take 2!)

So, I did one of these like a year and a half ago...

I had a scary dream last night with zombies trying to get into the house. I took the zombies to be the stress of my bar results and other shit going on.

In the year and a half since the LAST thread, I've had a steady job and had some California sun. If I don't pass this time, I think it will result in frustration that will immediately lead to rage.

That said, ~213 hours to go. SWEET!

Will post as frequently as I can.

B.L.A.M., Thursday, 8 May 2008 04:10 (seventeen years ago)

Like right now....

Just had some pasta with pesto and chicken, two glass of tempranillo, and have just written a memo re: closing arguments in a trial I have sat as second chair on all this past week.

I am going to bed.

B.L.A.M., Thursday, 8 May 2008 04:11 (seventeen years ago)

Rest up and best of luck.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 May 2008 04:12 (seventeen years ago)

B.L.A.M., kick it up a notch

Hurting 2, Thursday, 8 May 2008 04:16 (seventeen years ago)

good luck!

sleeve, Thursday, 8 May 2008 04:27 (seventeen years ago)

Sending you good thoughts!!!!

Sara R-C, Thursday, 8 May 2008 04:37 (seventeen years ago)

Good luck.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 8 May 2008 11:15 (seventeen years ago)

Just got up. Was troubled last night by a question. To wit:

If a settlor has signed a valid power of attorney, and that power of attorney explicitly includes among its conferred abilities the ability to transfer the settlor's property into trust, does a trust created with that power of attorney become invalid because the settlor didn't know about the formation of the trust?

I say no. I'm sticking with it.

204 hours...This thread will get better once the weekend hits. I'll be able to post sillier things.

B.L.A.M., Thursday, 8 May 2008 13:50 (seventeen years ago)

g'luck with that.

darraghmac, Thursday, 8 May 2008 13:50 (seventeen years ago)

204 hours, eh? you will go insane.

cutty, Thursday, 8 May 2008 13:51 (seventeen years ago)

re: your hypothetical, if the POA explicitly has that power i don't see why any knowledge on the settlor's behalf would preclude the trust being created

cutty, Thursday, 8 May 2008 13:52 (seventeen years ago)

cutty, my point EXACTLY.

So, having a cup of coffee, waiting for my bagel to toast, and pondering what MAY be a free weekend.

203 hours...

B.L.A.M., Thursday, 8 May 2008 14:09 (seventeen years ago)

YOUR LAWYER TALK IS VERY FANCY I SEE

gabbneb, Thursday, 8 May 2008 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

Its getting there. I have progressed past the "I don't understand the words" phase into "I get paid by the words" phase. The sign of a master is the "I get paid for no words." phase.

202.5 hours...

B.L.A.M., Thursday, 8 May 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

hi andy!

69, Thursday, 8 May 2008 14:50 (seventeen years ago)

So, I just finishd a trial that was hilarious. Details probably shouldn't be posted, for the sake of our client, but suffice it to say that the following are all true:

1) You should never get in the middle of a mother/daughter dispute
2) Felons should never run gun shops
3) You probably want to check at least SOME of the law before making an argument before a judge.

I just had an awesome dinner - a few glasses of wine, a good steak, and a FABULOUS country tourine. And now I am at home, about to go to bed.

189 hours...

B.L.A.M., Friday, 9 May 2008 04:02 (seventeen years ago)

I can only hope your lawyer posts are as good as your bartending posts!
Probably not, with that pesky confidentiality thing.
Don't leave ILX behind when you go all professional.

aimurchie, Friday, 9 May 2008 05:19 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I'll try, but some are just not as immediately crazy as the denizens of bartown.

180 hours.........

B.L.A.M., Friday, 9 May 2008 13:36 (seventeen years ago)

goodluck! here's some inspiration to pass: i will send you more nz chocolate if you do, as a congratulatory present!

Rubyredd, Friday, 9 May 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

Man, my bosses need to come to at least some consensus re efforts in the office.

We just finished a trial which was, admittedly, pretty tiring, but could have been a WHOLE lot worse. Regardless, I'm pretty tired. But, as always, I'm into the office early, and have been put on a new case. So, I'm slowly attempting to bring myself up to speed, but not really working to hard on a Friday.

So, my one boss, who was the one I was in trial with, calls from home (he didn't come in today) and said that I should go home and relax. My OTHER boss, who has basically been running an insane asylum while we were both in trial, flipped the fuck out.

To which I responded "I want it noted for the record that I had nothing to do with the going home early order."

Good News of the Day: I will be going to Bonnaroo, regardless of the trial that may or may not be going on. This is good news, so I don't really NEED any more for the day.

171.5 hours to go...

B.L.A.M., Friday, 9 May 2008 21:22 (seventeen years ago)

Man, could that last sentence have made any LESS sense, gramatically?

I hope to have some more interesting posts this weekend, including my magnum opus re the recently completed trial. It will involve guns, psychiatric drugs, family feuds, gypsies, and a scumbag lawyer who got bitch-smacked by the awful force of TRUTH.

B.L.A.M., Friday, 9 May 2008 21:24 (seventeen years ago)

DETAILS, COUNSELOR.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 May 2008 21:26 (seventeen years ago)

It really demands more attention than I can muster at this late an hour on a Friday. I would not be doing the story justice with a half-assed telling. It will be done before tomorrow.

B.L.A.M., Friday, 9 May 2008 21:44 (seventeen years ago)

I spent about three hours last night demolishing my friend on GTA IV multiplayer. He'll claim it was b/c he was high, and I wasn't (I wasn't), but the simple fact is that he's not good at the game.

B.L.A.M., Saturday, 10 May 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

Rest of Weekend:

1) Told to take the rest of the weekend off by my boss
2) I follow orders explicitly, especially when I agree with them
3) Saturday night, played music, including what developed into a three part harmony medley of The Joker and The Sweater Song.
4) Sunday, got new television - a hand me down 32 inch Vaio - from a friend, thus delaying any HD purchase for at least another year or two
5) Watched the Laker game with same friend
6) Played music at home
7) Was in bed by 8:30
8) Now at the office

106.5 hours to go.............

And I know I owe a story. I'll write it when I get a chance this week.

B.L.A.M., Monday, 12 May 2008 14:33 (seventeen years ago)

I think that this week will be the most stressful of the Results Weeks I've had. I am already TOTALLY on pins and needles, and am entirely unable to concentrate on anything.

Really not good, considering that I have a ton of work to do.

B.L.A.M., Monday, 12 May 2008 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

So, the last three days have been an absolute nightmare, and I have been avoiding as much thought about this fucking thing as I can...but its time to stare the fucker down.

Tomorrow, there are two things that could happen: I could pass or I could fail. At this point, I think it is entirely possible that I passed, but also possible that I didn't.

If I pass - Significant pay raise, significant rise in on-the-job potential for liability, significant rise in marketability and earning potential, and I would never have to take the fucking thing again.

ALSO - I have had probably the most turbulent two years of my entire life since moving to CA, and passing the bar exam would be like FINALLY beating the last boss on a video game. Except I would get a better pay off than videogame credit sequence.

If I fail - I will experience frustration that will immediately funnel in rage, and something will need to be broken. Probably several things. I really don't know how I will react, but there better not be too much within arm's reach that I care about, b/c they will not survive. I will then get REALLY REALLY REALLY hammered, and then register to take the fucking thing AGAIN in July. Because, at the end of all thought, I really do like what I do, and I'm getting much, much better at it, but I can't really get paid or do it fully until I'm licensed.

So, depending upon what the gods have determined, and they have already determined them at this point, that's whats going to be going on in a little over 27 hours.

FUCK. Can I please just fast forward to 6:30 tomorrow evening and just KNOW what happened?

AAAAAAAHAGHAGHAGHAGHAHAGHAGHAHAGHGAGHAHAGHAGHAGHAGHAGHAGHAGHAGHAGGHAGHa'eiouhr;ifjhaer;iogfhaer;oiguhaer;ght p9t-[1y759q8weuhrjfaeurfng-q3874n5=1v08u 50qwurtqo[eirutnq=3098 nq35-90qn 34t!

B.L.A.M., Thursday, 15 May 2008 21:47 (seventeen years ago)

Go team!

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 16 May 2008 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

Please to choose one expendable breakable item in advance of possible rage, so to avoid random rage-breakage, in event of unwanted outcome.

Signed, the Management.

Aimless, Friday, 16 May 2008 03:20 (seventeen years ago)

I am sending good wishes and thoughts your way!

But why do they make you wait for your score? (I guess I know nothing of bar exams... is there a lot of essay writing/stuff that needs to be subjectively graded?)

Sara R-C, Friday, 16 May 2008 04:58 (seventeen years ago)

How come there are so many stupid lawyers and a smart one has to take the stupid bar exam twice? That's what I wanna know, Mr. Bar Exam!

aimurchie, Friday, 16 May 2008 05:27 (seventeen years ago)

(Sorry BLAM, I am speaking directly to the bar exam. I had to go to court this week and encountered some very stupid lawyers. Also, my lawyer "forgot" about court and failed to show up. So...you seem smart and you want to be a lawyer and you should be should be a lawyer.

How do you "forget" about court, as a lawyer?!)

aimurchie, Friday, 16 May 2008 13:41 (seventeen years ago)

gin

gbx, Friday, 16 May 2008 13:42 (seventeen years ago)

how long to go?

darraghmac, Friday, 16 May 2008 13:49 (seventeen years ago)

But why do they make you wait for your score? (I guess I know nothing of bar exams... is there a lot of essay writing/stuff that needs to be subjectively graded?)

The test is 2/3 subjectively graded. Only the Multistate portion is multiple choice, and is graded from a good old Scantron sheet.

How do you "forget" about court, as a lawyer?!

Yeah, I just have no idea. Some folks are idiots.

B.L.A.M., Friday, 16 May 2008 13:59 (seventeen years ago)

11 hours to go, and here's what my day is going to look like:

Got to the office at 6:30 - traffic was super light, and I have some work to do.

Will be at the office until ~4:30 or so.

Will then return home, where I will check my results online at 6pm.

I will, if I think about it, post my results here as soon as I can after. No promises.

B.L.A.M., Friday, 16 May 2008 14:01 (seventeen years ago)

Think of it this way:

- If you pass, you get to drink drinks purchased for you in celebration.
- If you didn't pass, you get to drink drinks purchased for you to drown your sorrows.

Either way, you drink for free!

HI DERE, Friday, 16 May 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

Dan, this much is true.

Or I could start another argument re Outkast. Drunk. That would be AWESOME.

B.L.A.M., Friday, 16 May 2008 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

failing bar and permabanned from ILM in the same day RIP dude

darraghmac, Friday, 16 May 2008 15:26 (seventeen years ago)

Heaven needed a drunk lawyer

Ned Raggett, Friday, 16 May 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

9.5 hours.

B.L.A.M., Friday, 16 May 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

that's 2am my local time, we can be drunk together.

darraghmac, Friday, 16 May 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

Dudes, it goes like this...

I've had an absolute roller coaster of it the last two years. I'm finally at a place where things are really good. I'm working a lot, and will continue to do so, but getting a positive result on this thing will really be like the final nail in the coffin of a crazy two years that I'm ready to just put behind me.

So, come on, God. Hook a brother up.

B.L.A.M., Friday, 16 May 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

Fingers crossed, etc.

Especially because I might need to hire you next week.

aimurchie, Friday, 16 May 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

ooh! let me answer your legal questions in the last few hours when liability cannot attach itself to me!

B.L.A.M., Friday, 16 May 2008 16:28 (seventeen years ago)

AND down the stretch they come......

5.75 hours.....

MOVE CLOCK!!!!

B.L.A.M., Friday, 16 May 2008 19:16 (seventeen years ago)

It's too shameful to discuss here.

However, every time I get drunk I feel like suing someone.
So, that will keep ya busy!

aimurchie, Friday, 16 May 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

Well, email me - we'll discuss.

I'm out. 3 hours and counting...I'll post results tonight.

B.L.A.M., Friday, 16 May 2008 21:56 (seventeen years ago)

exciting!

Surmounter, Friday, 16 May 2008 21:57 (seventeen years ago)

45 mins to go...can't these fuckers just release the scores?!?!?!

B.L.A.M., Saturday, 17 May 2008 00:14 (seventeen years ago)

this makes me nervous! good luck!

tehresa, Saturday, 17 May 2008 00:15 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I'm much more calm about it now. if I don't pass, I'll be upset, and I'll be bummed about having to take the fucking thing again, but I have a law degree and I want to practice law. I need to be licensed for that.

14 min...

This seriously is like running into a pitchblack room and there are either going to be (a) a whole lot people smiling and wishing you well or (b) a big, dark hole.

B.L.A.M., Saturday, 17 May 2008 00:49 (seventeen years ago)

i am wishing you well.

estela, Saturday, 17 May 2008 00:52 (seventeen years ago)

I'll still hire you! We will just have to negotiate a price. You may be about to become pricey...

aimurchie, Saturday, 17 May 2008 00:52 (seventeen years ago)

*crossing fingers*

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 17 May 2008 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

HI DERE, Saturday, 17 May 2008 01:02 (seventeen years ago)

Nope. although I will wait for the official report in the mail, it appears I didn't pass.

Thanks for your support, though.

This is the most frustrated I have ever been in my life. Period.

B.L.A.M., Saturday, 17 May 2008 01:07 (seventeen years ago)

ah shit. sorry to hear that.

darraghmac, Saturday, 17 May 2008 01:09 (seventeen years ago)

Dammit. :-( Will have a drink tonight for ya.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 May 2008 01:11 (seventeen years ago)

sorry man :( i will have several drinks for you.

tehresa, Saturday, 17 May 2008 01:12 (seventeen years ago)

You are a lawyer.
You just need the fucky-fucks to approve it. Take the stupid bar again, just so you can have revenge against the stupid fucky fucks.

But also get really drunk tonight - we're all with you, BLAM!

aimurchie, Saturday, 17 May 2008 01:28 (seventeen years ago)

You are a lawyer.
You just need the fucky-fucks to approve it. Take the stupid bar again, just so you can have revenge against the stupid fucky fucks.

This is the greatest post I've ever had directed at me.

Thanks guys. I'm well on my way to drunksville.

B.L.A.M., Saturday, 17 May 2008 01:46 (seventeen years ago)

:-( I echo that great comment.

I'm really sorry - you'll show them next time.

ENBB, Saturday, 17 May 2008 01:49 (seventeen years ago)

boo hiss

going to hoist a drink now

HI DERE, Saturday, 17 May 2008 01:52 (seventeen years ago)

I'll drink to you tonight, too. Sorry about the results. You had courage to post about the experience, courage that will help you when you're a lawyer. And you will be. Get drunk, get sleep, get ready for the next exam. You'll pass.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 17 May 2008 02:04 (seventeen years ago)

sorry, BLAM. Cali is the toughest, they say.

gabbneb, Saturday, 17 May 2008 02:19 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, man. The overriding emotion right now is just a focused, white-hot rage.

I've spent the last year busting my ass, doing everything from client intake to final arguments to settlement agreements, and I FUCKING LOVE IT.

I am built to be a lawyer. I just can't seem to get licensed.

So there isn't any self-pity. There's not any feeling of worthlessness. Its more like a feeling like (and all the Angelenos will get this without a second's hesitation) I have somewhere really important to be that I really want to be and that I belong...but there's six months of traffic between me and there.

I am looking at taking this fucking thing again like a training sequence from a great kung-fu movie, or Paul Newman preparing for Atlantic City in The Color of Money.

I am going to beat the living fucking everloving shit out of that motherfucker next time.

B.L.A.M., Saturday, 17 May 2008 02:27 (seventeen years ago)

and all the Angelenos will get this without a second's hesitation

Hehe. Very true indeed.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 May 2008 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry, dude. That sucks.

libcrypt, Saturday, 17 May 2008 02:52 (seventeen years ago)

I am going to beat the living fucking everloving shit out of that motherfucker next time.

Fuck yeah! Am currently drinking Acme IPA ale in raised fist of unity...

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 17 May 2008 05:50 (seventeen years ago)

I was thinking of you last night when I was without internet access and I was up trying to prepare for my clinical for today. I'm sorry it turned out this way, but I know you're as determined as I am not to quit. (I had a totally bizarre first day of clinical, plus the whole thing where we don't get to sleep because there is so much prep necessary made ME want to quit last night at around 2 a.m.)

I'm totally having a drink in your honor as soon as I get my [expletives redacted] care plan turned in on Tuesday.

Sara R-C, Saturday, 17 May 2008 22:01 (seventeen years ago)

six months pass...

he passed!
