where did the myth of the evil drug dealer outside the school gates come from?

For I have a feeling there is a sizeable percentage of the population that still believe it - the idea of kids being "lured" into taking drugs in this fashion, when we all know that any drug dealer would have to be pretty retarded to target kids in this fashion for the simple reasons that:

Kids don't have much money.

Kids can't be relied upon to keep their mouths shut.

Your thoughts? Liberal references to the Grange Hill Cast's 1986 #2 hit are encouraged.

DIRTY OLD MAN (The Fugs, 1965)

Hangin' out by the schoolyard gate
Lookin' up every dress I can
Suckin' wind through my upper plate
I'm a dirty old man (dirty old man, dirty old man)

Handin' out joints to the kids at school
Givin' out pictures and porn and pills
Fillin' the front of my shirt with drool
I'm a dirty old man (dirty old man, dirty old man)

Nervously wiggling my toes in my boots
Communist literature in my hands
Pinchin' all the bosoms I can
I'm a dirty old man (dirty old man, dirty old man)

Hello, kiddies, here I am again on the ol' schoolyard!
I got thrill pills for all the little chickies,
and I got funny cigarettes for all you boys,
and I got dirty pictures for all of you together!
Well, I guess I better go, I see the campus cop's coming...
I better split now. Remember Leon Trotsky!

There was a local lad who did hang out outside the local comp, peddling weed. An archetype come to life! (sort of) I think something bad happened to him pretty quickly.

"Family friend" of mine was one of those guys you read about who sells drugs out of ice cream vans

Try introducing heroin, watch the pounds just fall away

When the shades of night are falling,
Comes a fellow everyone knows.
It's the old dope peddler,
Spreading joy wherever he goes.

Every evening you will find him,
Around our neighborhood.
It's the old dope peddler
Doing well by doing good.

He gives the kids free samples,
Because he knows full well
That today's young innocent faces
Will be tomorrow's clientele.

Here's a cure for all your troubles,
Here's an end to all distress.
It's the old dope peddler
With his powdered happiness.

An older brother of a mate was selling ecstasy pills to my mates outside the school gates!

Of course, what he forgot to tell them that the "E's" were Paracetamol.

King Boy Pato, Friday, 9 May 2008 14:10 (seventeen years ago)

This myth came about because there actually are evil drug dealers outside the school gates who act as decoys for the evil drug dealers sitting next to your kids in math class.

HI DERE, Friday, 9 May 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

thank god my schools never had any of either kind. our dealers were as friendly as could be.

Good nicknames for provincial drug dealers:

Jamaican Dave
Turkish Pete
Finnish Tuomas

You don't have to look outside the gates at San Diego State.

Where did it come from?

The idea that 'our precious children' could be lured into drugs by strangers outside the gates, where us parents who do not immediately go and collect them are leaving them vulnerable to corrupting influences from the outside world..

points:
1. Kids who are told not to accept sweets from strangers (and why), are not going to say "ah, but these are not sweets, they b cheap smack, rite?"

2. As you say, it's more likely to be friends at school, etc.

(for the record, we do collect our kids from school. Damn roads are fierce)

My son walks home "on his own" (i.e. without a parent but usually with various of his friends) and has suddenly started talking about how he is worried about being kidnapped. It's very sad.

The myth of the random child-snatcher is a bit ridiculous.

Hurting 2, Friday, 9 May 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

Especially since your children are much more likely to be snatched by their friends at school and sold for their bodily organs.

Yeah, I know. I'm not sure where he's got it from or why now, suddenly. We've always told him that the biggest dangers are traffic and, obviously, killer bees. We do live near Rothley so you get a lot of "Maddy" talk amongst the kids but obviously that's not new. I don't really know what to say to him except the obvious really.

Ned Trifle II, Friday, 9 May 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

Have you warned him about emo?

Hurting 2, Friday, 9 May 2008 22:33 (seventeen years ago)

sorry guys, are you saying that drug dealers do not actually give out free smack to get kids hooked? What kind of far-left liberal nonsense is this?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Friday, 9 May 2008 23:32 (seventeen years ago)

I think that particular 'schoolyard pusher' myth goes back to roughly the 1930s, during the big drug scares around heroin and marijuana (after prohibition ended).

iirc, there were many big drug scares earlier than that, too. The cocaine scare. The opium scare. The morphine scare. Before 1890, I don't think there were any outlawed drugs. Most of them could be had from the local druggist.

"Kids don't have much money" is a pile of fucking shit. the little cunts are loaded these days.

You must be incredibly old if you can remember that far back.
