Independent short, for sure.

Daniel_Rf, Saturday, 10 May 2008 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

Animation is a medium, not a genre!

Tuomas, Saturday, 10 May 2008 14:19 (seventeen years ago)

What movies would fall under the category "disaster"?

Don't miss out on potential zings here folks.

RabiesAngentleman, Saturday, 10 May 2008 14:22 (seventeen years ago)

But seriously, what is that exactly?

RabiesAngentleman, Saturday, 10 May 2008 14:22 (seventeen years ago)

Towering Inferno, The Poseidon Adventure, The Swarm, that sort of thing. Disaster movies were big in the seventies, and resurrected again in the nineties by Titanic, Sunlight, Dante's Peak, etc.

Tuomas, Saturday, 10 May 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

Do you want a serious serious answer, or 'Gigli, ROFL' type answers?

Serious answer - stuff like Towering Inferno, The Poseidon Adventure... possibly even the recent 9/11 films might count. Films about disaster scenarios. It is that simple.

Disaster movies usually feature a group of people (instead of a single protagonist) trying to escape the effects of a (natural or caused by man) disaster. In most of these films, this group is supposed to be represent the society in miniature size, with elderly people, kids, ethnic minorities, sometimes even pets. Often the group consists of people who did not know each other before the disaster, and one theme in the movies is how they learn to work as a team to avoid death.

Tuomas, Saturday, 10 May 2008 14:33 (seventeen years ago)

Also, often in these movies the group has one or two egotist members, who just try to save their own hide without helping the rest of the group. Uusually these people then get killed, to prove a lesson on altruism and solidarity. So disaster movies are very much about collectivity.

emil.y--mostly wanted serious answers, welcoming both. Thanks guys! I should have guessed the obvious there.

I suppose that would include a lot of zombie flicks as well.

Also, have I been misreading "Tuomas" as "Toumas", or are those two different posters?

RabiesAngentleman, Saturday, 10 May 2008 14:37 (seventeen years ago)

No, there's just me.

Tuomas, Saturday, 10 May 2008 14:38 (seventeen years ago)

Why is "conspiracy thriller" different from "thriller"?

Made me wonder, too. So what then would the simplified category of "comedy" include? Just everything else non American or British, I suppose?

Tuomas--ah, so I just can't read. :D

RabiesAngentleman, Saturday, 10 May 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

I've always liked the vague, can't be bothered-ness of the 'drama' category. It's, you know, a film about people doing stuff.

chap, Saturday, 10 May 2008 14:44 (seventeen years ago)

Adventure. Closely followed by stop-motion. A stop-motion adventure film would be heaven for me. Are there any?
