Donnie Darko Sequel Starts Filming May 18 Source: Screen Daily May 9, 2008
Screen Daily reports that UK-based sales company Velvet Octopus will be launching sales in Cannes for S. Darko, billed as the sequel to the 2001 cult hit Donnie Darko. Fox has already taken North American rights for the $10 million-budgeted film.
Chris Fisher, who previously made Nightstalker and Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders, will direct.
Daviegh Chase reprises her role as Donnie's younger sister. The cast for S. Darko also includes Ed Westwick (Son of Rambow, Gossip Girl), Briana Evigan (Step Up 2 the Streets) and Justin Chatwin (Dragonball).
The story picks up seven years after the first film when little sister Samantha Darko and her best friend Corey are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions.
Producers have spoken to Richard Kelly about the project but he is not involved in any official capacity at this stage.
The project starts shooting May 18.

The film was originally released on DVD and VHS in March of 2002. Strong DVD sales led Newmarket Films to release a "Directors Cut" on DVD in 2005. Bob Berney, President of Newmarket Films, described the film as "a runaway hit on DVD," citing US sales of more than $10 million.

(i mean, weird that someone would think this was a good idea.)
I'm kind of hoping this is all based on/follows the lyrics of Billy Idol's "Eyes Without a Face."

Oh my god this sounds like the worst idea ever. Why don't they just go all the way and let Uwe Boll write this I mean what the fuck.

Why am I all of a sudden very curious? Maybe because of Daveigh Chase's version of "The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA"?

Wow, I don't even know what to say... There's beautiful camera shots, I guess. But as for the story they're laying out, ugh.

This looks really, unabashedly terrible, but teenagers (& the Twilight crowd?) will love it regardless.
I know the original had a small budget, but at least it had a decent DP. This looks like some sci-fi channel bullshit.

i'll watch it. sparkle motion? more like boner motion.

Recipient of a rare straight F in the Onion's AV Club today, which means I just have to see it. Hopefully it'll be enough to tide me over til the next awful DTDVD sequel, The Cell 2 (seriously, google it, if you don't piss yourself laughing at the plot synopsis you are made of sterner stuff than I).

Saw this last night and quite enjoyed it. It's better than its IMDB rating of 3.8 would lead you to believe.
It takes a certain bravery to get a bunch of big teen stars (from Twilight, Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill) and put them in a film that's deliberately confusing, has characters dying and coming back to life multiple times and doesn't resolve all of its storylines in a neat, happy way at the end.
There's certainly a lot wrong with it but there's definitely something of the atmosphere of the first film and a few moments of real beauty. Could probably have watched with the sound off and not missed a great deal though (aside from Whale's Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe in a party scene).
