For the first time, Bush revealed a personal way in which he has tried to acknowledge the sacrifice of soldiers and their families: He has given up golf.
"I don't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf," he said. "I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal."

Occasionally I stand on a street corner in vigil, along with others who want to see the war ended and the troops brought home.

They are called taxes. I see where they have been withheld from each and every paycheck.
Other than that, I, too, have purchased drinks for our men and women in uniform.

The funniest thing about this is that if you read between the lines it's pretty clear that he's giving it up because it makes HIM look bad, not because of anything it does to the troops.
A couple of months ago I was talking to this retired psychoanalyst dude who hangs out in a local coffeeshop all the time, and he was giving me a spiel on how Bush is a classic narcissistic personality. At the time I thought it was kind of easy and gimmicky to say so, but I'm beginning to think he was right.
