"No Worries"

People who say this as part of casual or especially business conversation should taken to the roof of their home or place of work and hung over the side by their ankles until they promise not to do so again...
The reason this is so horrible to say is that it assumes a casual southern-California kind of relaxation about life that is just not plausible or realistic (at least not for a sustained amount of time). The fact is there are worries.

calstars, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 02:24 (seventeen years ago)

This is a Cali saying? I thought it was an Australian saying. When we said 'no worries' in LA we got funny looks.

moley, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 02:26 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, wtf to Americans saying this thing? Is this like Canadians saying 'good on ya'?

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 02:54 (seventeen years ago)

No wuckin' forries.

S-, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 02:55 (seventeen years ago)

Definately Australian, & therefore used in a v.deadpan fashion, or with a disguised sneer.

"Noh wurries, mahte."

etc, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:00 (seventeen years ago)

i like it

it's pleasant to hear and i like it when cute guys say it, cuz they'll say it in that guy way.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:03 (seventeen years ago)

there's even a suburb of sydney called 'no worries' xposts

electricsound, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:03 (seventeen years ago)

I say no wuckas sometimes, I really should quit that.

Trayce, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:03 (seventeen years ago)

it's certainly not as weird as "Late" like instead of "Later", which thankfully no one's ever said to me or i'd be really confused

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:04 (seventeen years ago)

what's "that guy way"? I'm sitting here saying "no worries" over and over again trying to figure it out :(

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:05 (seventeen years ago)

it is a very hawaiian thing

gr8080, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:05 (seventeen years ago)

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:07 (seventeen years ago)

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:07 (seventeen years ago)

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:08 (seventeen years ago)

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:13 (seventeen years ago)

?? wtf is this about 'no worries' as an expression or as some kind of sign off? i dont see the prob w/ saying 'no worries' to someone in casual conversation

deeznuts, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:13 (seventeen years ago)

haha i know but when it gets into southern twang territory it's really a case-by-case thing =)

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:14 (seventeen years ago)

yea i dunno to me it sounds very organic, and usually someone says it to me when i like NEED to hear it. i'll be all nervous about something

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:14 (seventeen years ago)

No drama : same as 'no worries'
No worries! : Expression of forgiveness or reassurance (No problem; forget about it; I can do it; Yes, I'll do it)

Thanks koalanet.com.au

wilter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:16 (seventeen years ago)

Def. Australian..Totally habitual. Don't even know if I could stop. I use it in place of 'you're welcome' if someone is saying thank you. Or if they make a big deal about you doing something that's really not a big deal. 'No worries' levels the playing field. Makes disingenuous flattery less so. At least in my mind...

VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:17 (seventeen years ago)

deez it's cool no worries drop no worries when you are feelin' it

libcrypt, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:18 (seventeen years ago)

i know, deez is totally worried

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:18 (seventeen years ago)

I use it a lot too. In fact i'm going to start saying "nw" to be hip on the internetzs

xposts

wilter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:18 (seventeen years ago)

i think i'm gonna start saying it in real life. it's really not me but as an experiment

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:19 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah shit I even say "no worries" to clients on the phone haha... I also say "cheers" which apparently is also some kind of heinous crime.

Trayce, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:19 (seventeen years ago)

what? i love cheers

people always find it so charming tho

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:19 (seventeen years ago)

i've started saying cheerio for some reason..

electricsound, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:20 (seventeen years ago)

wow

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:21 (seventeen years ago)

i am not worried i am just confused as to why this is a thread

deeznuts, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:21 (seventeen years ago)

I know a guy who says cheerio! He also says 'coolasaurus rex' instead of cool. My dad says cheerio too.

In Aust, 'No worries' = 'Yup, sure', or 'OK, got it', or sometimes, 'OK, sure, see ya later'. Most Australians say it hundreds of times a month. It'll never go away, no matter how annoying it is. I mean, you may as well ask Americans to stop saying 'cool'. hey why don't Americans say 'swell' or 'neat' any more?

moley, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:21 (seventeen years ago)

i say neat

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:22 (seventeen years ago)

a lot

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:22 (seventeen years ago)

no worries deez a thread is a thread and it's like schroedinger's cat

libcrypt, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:22 (seventeen years ago)

everytime deez, i think i'm reading DEEJ, like on full house

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:22 (seventeen years ago)

libcrypt you seem to still misunderestimand me

deeznuts, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:23 (seventeen years ago)

no worries deez it's all in the game and a player's got to roll you know?

libcrypt, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:23 (seventeen years ago)

coolasaurus rex

might have to steal it

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:23 (seventeen years ago)

wilter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:24 (seventeen years ago)

deeznuts, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:24 (seventeen years ago)

this guy at work the other day called my worker man 3 times and bro once in the span of 5 minutes. i felt a little weird.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:24 (seventeen years ago)

*my co-worker

people use "man" a lot still

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:25 (seventeen years ago)

My ex says "neat!" all the time but blame Bender for that one.

Trayce, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:26 (seventeen years ago)

Oh yeah, also wilter's definition is also correct - 'no worries' is often used to mean 'no dramas'. Eg,

A: Shit, I dropped my wine all over your carpet!
B: (in genial tones of reassurance) No worries at all mate - the dog pissed on it yesterday anyway.

moley, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:27 (seventeen years ago)

And 'swell'? Do any of you say 'swell'?

moley, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:28 (seventeen years ago)

i don't say swell but i do say 'gear' and 'rock'n'roll'

electricsound, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:28 (seventeen years ago)

no wukks

wilter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:28 (seventeen years ago)

my boyfriend says swell a lot

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:29 (seventeen years ago)

my bf says "hey dollface" a lot. He also likes wearing trilibes and wingtip shoes.

Trayce, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:34 (seventeen years ago)

Wow that makes him sound like a wanker BUT HE ISNT.

Trayce, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:34 (seventeen years ago)

makes him sound real swell 2 me =)

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:36 (seventeen years ago)

i love dollface

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:37 (seventeen years ago)

i don't think anyone's called me that before...

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:39 (seventeen years ago)

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:43 (seventeen years ago)

or DON'T SWEAT IT

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:43 (seventeen years ago)

that seems very 80s to me now. do ppl say that anymore?

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:45 (seventeen years ago)

Huh, now "good on ya" would surely be a bit Anglophilic but I had no idea "no worries" was Australian.

Sundar, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:53 (seventeen years ago)

I still say "no prob" but I'm not sure if anyone else does.

Sundar, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:54 (seventeen years ago)

tons & tons & tons of people say 'no prob' etc sundar, basically everyone who's posted to this thread except for you & me & wilter & moley are idiots whose thoughts should not be trusted

basically crutis & surmounter & libcrypt are idiots

deeznuts, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:56 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry, but 'good on ya' is Australian too. In fact, everything is Australian.

moley, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:57 (seventeen years ago)

I picked up "no worries" while living in Australia. Amazing!

dan m, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 03:59 (seventeen years ago)

You peeps have too many worries.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 04:00 (seventeen years ago)

deeznuts, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 04:14 (seventeen years ago)

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 04:18 (seventeen years ago)

what about it being completely unfunny to everyone did you not learn the first time?

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 04:18 (seventeen years ago)

I'm puzzled about this "No Worries" phrase, too. It wouldn't surprise me if it was Australian after all. All I know is I don't remember hearing this phrase while I was growing up. Seems a more recent thing. Do Brits say this too?

Anyway it doesn't bother me if people say it, but I can't imagine saying it myself.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 04:19 (seventeen years ago)

oh wait wait wait I meant "keep it positive, deeznuts"

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 04:19 (seventeen years ago)

no worries man

deeznuts, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 04:20 (seventeen years ago)

perhaps I have been too coddling of the deeznuts. your 77 privileges have been revoked until your schtick post to substantial post ratio goes back down.

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 04:20 (seventeen years ago)
