I do pretty well most of the time but today it hit me...

calstars, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 21:22 (seventeen years ago)

i understand

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 21:23 (seventeen years ago)

Only when I let it. I am currently attempting to pull off a work free day. 2.5 hours to go...

B.L.A.M., Wednesday, 14 May 2008 21:23 (seventeen years ago)

haha me too!

Surmounter, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 21:24 (seventeen years ago)

I've had this before, for sure. That whole "this kind of job only exists to feed the other jobs here which are all holding each other up wtf am I doing argh" thing.

Right now, I provision ADSL for a living - I like to think thats *somewhat* useful, ppl seem to think their interwebs are important to them.

Trayce, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 21:58 (seventeen years ago)

my job is pretty critical to the company, yet i get paid crap and get no recognition at all - mainly because what i do is boring and nobody really understands it.

rockapads, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 22:01 (seventeen years ago)

are you a proofreader?

and what, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 22:01 (seventeen years ago)

1:55 left...shhhhh......

B.L.A.M., Wednesday, 14 May 2008 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

At times I wish my job was of less consequence. I'm no bigshot or anything, but I do feel a great deal of responsibility. It weighs on me, and part of me longs for days past when my workday was sort of a waste of time.

Super Cub, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 22:11 (seventeen years ago)

not a proofreader. i help plan and oversee development and manufacturing schedules, act as a liaison, and all kinds of other random stuff. i am surrounded by loud people who have "fun" jobs.

rockapads, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)

1:14 min...shhhhh......

B.L.A.M., Wednesday, 14 May 2008 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

I think the slightly fake (everything is backed up all the time & shit) feelins of powah and responsibilitah are great! To know that pushing this button would disconnect thousands of developers in india, typing this command would mess up something on a multi-Tb database server, doing something to one of the mainframes would mean that 25,000+ people across Europe wouldn't get paid on time or be able to do their jobs, awesome! (But underpaid of course)

StanM, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 22:47 (seventeen years ago)

58 min............shhhh................

B.L.A.M., Wednesday, 14 May 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

Super Cub, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:05 (seventeen years ago)

Super Cub, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:05 (seventeen years ago)

Any company that relies on any one employee is fucked.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:11 (seventeen years ago)

A friend of mine in college's dad was a VP at a large automobile brake company, and he and the president of the company were never supposed to fly in the same plane together.

Super Cub, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:16 (seventeen years ago)

I could care less whether my job is significant or not. Working the graveyard shift every other day I mostly I just miss the sun. And people. hisssss, precious, precious.

xpost that's weird. My grandma was briefly a VP of a major tax company, I should ask her about that.

RabiesAngentleman, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

I thought it was bizarre and pretty irrational.

Super Cub, Thursday, 15 May 2008 01:29 (seventeen years ago)

Some kind of personal dispute, maybe?

RabiesAngentleman, Thursday, 15 May 2008 02:10 (seventeen years ago)

I have come to terms with the sheer insignificance of my life. So I'm cool with my job.

Abbott, Thursday, 15 May 2008 02:23 (seventeen years ago)

The official explanation was that if the plane were to crash, the company would be fucked.

xpost

Super Cub, Thursday, 15 May 2008 02:25 (seventeen years ago)

i basically help people plan their weekends

s1ocki, Thursday, 15 May 2008 02:38 (seventeen years ago)

If I didn't go in to work tomorrow, businesses would have to wait another day or two to get their sign permits.

iiiijjjj, Thursday, 15 May 2008 02:43 (seventeen years ago)

Although my job is lowly paid, it at least has the advantage that I know what I do matters to a fairly large number of people. Screwing up can have real consequences.

Aimless, Thursday, 15 May 2008 03:13 (seventeen years ago)

I am surprised at just how many hours I am able to fritter away at my job looking at bullshit on the internet or chatting or whatever. Yes I have work to do sometimes but man, I get away with murder there. And yes, ultimately I feel my work is insignificant. It never really feels like there's anyone who would flip out a great deal if I screwed up.

Bimble, Thursday, 15 May 2008 03:40 (seventeen years ago)

i catalog shit so even worse shit can be unleashed into the world.

strgn, Thursday, 15 May 2008 06:44 (seventeen years ago)

it's very significant, in terms of that it pays my food, housing, education, motor and entertainment bills.

other than that, i'd rather have this job and get away with a more 'relaxed' attitude than take my last job back and have a nervous breakdown within a fortnight.

darraghmac, Thursday, 15 May 2008 12:04 (seventeen years ago)

i'm only needed 1% of the time but when i am it's Relatively significant

blueski, Thursday, 15 May 2008 12:07 (seventeen years ago)

I'm providing technical support for an ISP, so to the people who ring in and I help get back on line, I'm important.

In terms of my standing here in the workplace, it's minimal. If I didn't come in I doubt anyone would really notice - except I'd get an AWOL on my work record - and if I left for somewhere else there'd be many more waiting to come in through the door.

Rob M v2, Thursday, 15 May 2008 12:49 (seventeen years ago)

Sheer insignifance of your role at work...does it ever hit you?

it doesn't hit me because i'm totally submerged in it. so there is now never any impact.

ken c, Thursday, 15 May 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago)

My role seems pretty insignificant at the moment, in terms of the fact that I spend a lot of time on my own doing things no one else cares about or understands. Occasionally big things can't happen without my help, which is always nice to know, but generally... meh.
