apparently they are wild leeks that taste like onions + garlic and make you smell for days??

Jordan, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

(sorry if everyone's been ramping it up for years and i'm tuomasing about this)

Jordan, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

good with pasta.

lauren, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:56 (seventeen years ago)

The vegetable of fairy tales! In the orig Rapunzel it's ramps the woodcutter's wife is craving while pregnant, so her Dear Husband steals rampion from the witch's garden and gets caught and promises her his unborn child to save himself. Hence the whole tower-and-hair thing.

Laurel, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:56 (seventeen years ago)

Common in France and Germany, which certainly jibes with the story origin.

Laurel, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:56 (seventeen years ago)

otm, xxp. they don't seem very indie to me.

gabbneb, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

Not the indiest veggie, but possibly the glammiest:

Baby I've got metal knees ooh.
Lady I'm beggin' of you please
Baby you think you're a champ but
Girl you ain't nothin' but a raw ramp.
Lady, your lips are the most
Baby, your mouth is like a ghost
Lady, you think you're a champ but
Girl you ain't nothin' but a raw ramp.

briania, Thursday, 15 May 2008 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

carne asada, Thursday, 15 May 2008 17:01 (seventeen years ago)

A bit like wild garlic but less so if you know what I mean.

Ned Trifle II, Thursday, 15 May 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)

Both delicious.

Ned Trifle II, Thursday, 15 May 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, I love this time of year. For mother's day dinner, we had ramps, morels and wild asparagus. If the fishing wasn't all muddied up it would've been a 100 percent gathered feast.

briania, Thursday, 15 May 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

ramp disaster last night, though - they were bigger than usual and ended up being really strong. too strong to eat, in fact.

lauren, Thursday, 15 May 2008 17:06 (seventeen years ago)

^^love that record

Jordan, Thursday, 15 May 2008 17:06 (seventeen years ago)

the early smaller ones are the best for sure.

I have not experienced ramps, I'll have to try when I am stateside next week.

Ed, Thursday, 15 May 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

Ramps are good but the indiest vegetable? Not fiddlehead ferns or nettles or something?

Michael White, Thursday, 15 May 2008 17:12 (seventeen years ago)

dandelion greens for sure.

bell_labs, Thursday, 15 May 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

i foraged some upstate last weekend. it's a very short season, cause, as mentioned, they get too big and are no longer tasty. crazy prices for these at farmer's markets. pretty much all profit.

mizzell, Thursday, 15 May 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

rhubarb

remy bean, Thursday, 15 May 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

it is neither uncommon nor strange, but it is so unique and wondrous to me

remy bean, Thursday, 15 May 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

It's funny 'cause these are all quite common to some culture or another.

Michael White, Thursday, 15 May 2008 17:23 (seventeen years ago)

is it fiddlehead season yet? i don't wanna miss out again this year

bell_labs, Thursday, 15 May 2008 17:29 (seventeen years ago)

fiddleheads + lemon/lavender reduction = A+

remy bean, Thursday, 15 May 2008 17:30 (seventeen years ago)

Sea cale is surely the most indie, apparently there's just one dude in the UK growing it for commercial use...

braveclub, Thursday, 15 May 2008 19:19 (seventeen years ago)

the indiest vegetable is the daikon

gabbneb, Thursday, 15 May 2008 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

i see daikon in a lot of supermarkets.

carne asada, Thursday, 15 May 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

so indie is supposed to signify non-mass-availability?

gabbneb, Thursday, 15 May 2008 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

tell us what it means to you

braveclub, Thursday, 15 May 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

fuck if i know. i'm just saying. a lot of this other stuff i don't see so much

Woman, I love your chest ooh,
Baby, I'm crazy 'bout your breasts
Woman, you think you're a champ but
Girl you ain't nothin' but a raw ramp
Baby I've got metal knees ooh.
Lady I'm beggin' of you please
Baby you think you're a champ but
Girl you ain't nothin' but a raw ramp.

briania, Thursday, 15 May 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

bell, fiddleheads are at the usgm.

lauren, Thursday, 15 May 2008 19:45 (seventeen years ago)

i like how all the gourmet foodie yuppie vegetables are the indie ones

gabbneb, Thursday, 15 May 2008 19:46 (seventeen years ago)

damnit i'm going out of town this weekend. i bet fiddleheads are over by next week :(

bell_labs, Thursday, 15 May 2008 19:47 (seventeen years ago)
