Yeah, I've been hearing that for at least a decade.

I thought this was gonna be about actual, delicious watermelon. which, at least in NC, is now starting to come into season. I unexpectedly stumbled upon some people giving away free watermelon yesterday while I was stoned; that was a pretty good afternoon.

wait wtf bernard? I'm in nc and the melons at the store are nowhere near ready yet plus they're all from FL, where are you getting good fresh watermelon
nb watermelon is my favorite fruit by a great measure and I get pretty irrational when actual delicious watermelon is the subject
― J0hn D., Friday, 16 May 2008 02:15 (seventeen years ago)
Aw, me too. I hate to say it but you broke my heart a little Johnb Db.

Stoned watermelon afternoon sounds like perfect afternoon.

of course, all of this is a moot point once July rolls around and Cook-Out busts out the watermelon shakes.
― bernard snowy, Friday, 16 May 2008 02:35 (seventeen years ago)
oh man
this is getting me very excited for that delicious communist watermelon
I don't know about you guys but here is my recipe for how to enjoy a watermelon: 1) refrigerate the fuck out of that watermelon 2) cut watermelon in half 3) eat 1/2 watermelon with spoon, place other half back in fridge 4) experience bliss
― J0hn D., Friday, 16 May 2008 03:01 (seventeen years ago)
I knew this was used for like a faction of the German Green Party but didn't know it was used in America.
I feel a little sad inside that watermelons could be someone's favourite fruit.

And milk for beverages.
(Wld put lactaid out for the people who needed it.)
wait 'til I start my apples vs. oranges poll, there'll be tears in ilxorland
― J0hn D., Friday, 16 May 2008 03:31 (seventeen years ago)
hint: it ain't apples
actually sometimes cantalopes are my favorite fruit, I cannot front. but basically
melons > citrus > berries > apples, which is no disrespect to a good apple > grapes > guavas > mangoes (tho mango defenders will wax very poetic about the subtle perfume etc) > other fruits
― J0hn D., Friday, 16 May 2008 03:33 (seventeen years ago)
When I was 14 I worked on this farm and we grew these little, completely truly seedless yellow watermelons; every day I OOPS dropped one and it would get a big crack in it and I would have to eat it. The most delicious produce of all time. Near the end of the summer my boss finally said "you don't have to pretend like this, you can just go ahead and eat one if you want".
― nickalicious, Friday, 16 May 2008 03:37 (seventeen years ago)
J0hn D. has lost it now -- though his overall exaltation of melons is sound, honeydew >>>>>>>> cantaloupe.
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 16 May 2008 03:43 (seventeen years ago)
I had a really good banana the other day and realized that they don't get enough credit for sheer edibility. sure, the peel's occasionally troublesome, but once that's out of the way you can wolf down the whole thing in a few seconds. what other food could you consume a similar volume of in that short time, with that little effort?
― bernard snowy, Friday, 16 May 2008 03:45 (seventeen years ago)
I am a very weird person because I seem to be the only person in the universe who thinks watermelon is completely horrible.
Pls not to hate me :(
Also my bf cant eat watermelon, it makes his mouth puff up like AngJolie after a bad botox job.

― horseshoe, Friday, 16 May 2008 04:00 (seventeen years ago)
i like j0hn d's watermelon method, but i usually add some salt too. so good
― 6335, Friday, 16 May 2008 04:43 (seventeen years ago)
I don't much like watermelons, but not quite to Trayce levels. They're mushy and sugary and there's no real tartness or texture to offset that, plus they have annoying seeds.
― libcrypt, Friday, 16 May 2008 05:40 (seventeen years ago)
melons > citrus > berries > apples
so basically, sugar content

one important criterion in the fruit olympics is "can I eat ungodly amounts of it at one sitting?" with a honeydew you max out at about one honeydew. with a cantaloupe you can eat at least five before you begin to feel sick, ergo, cataloupe wins
also and this is actually important you can make an incredible agua fresca with cantaloupe, absolutely the best thing on a hot day except for Indian lemon-ginger drink
― J0hn D., Friday, 16 May 2008 12:22 (seventeen years ago)
charantais is the best melon and anyone who thinks otherwise is certifiable. J0hn D's criteria are sound though. I can eat huge ammounts of charantais.
― Ed, Friday, 16 May 2008 12:24 (seventeen years ago)
> with a cantaloupe you can eat at least five before you begin to feel sick
Five cantaloupes?!?? What size cantaloupes are we talking here, because I thought I could eat a lot (lolfattey) but that sounds like insanity to me.

Hey John, have you tried honeydew melon sprinkled with a little ground ginger? Sweetness of the melon and the sharpness of the ginger compliment each other nicely.
