Help me fix my record player

Hi. I have a pretty nice record player that someone gave to me. It's a Sony, maybe from the 80s or 90s? It wont spin and when I took off the platter it looked like a rubber band was lose. Actually, it's off. There's nothing wrong with the band, I just don't know where it goes. Bear in mind, I know nothing about how to fix one of these things. Later I think I'll take a photo because this is probably really hard to discuss without one.

Any advice?

loop the belt (it's called a belt) around the center of the platter, then pull it around the rotating (when turned on) little spindle looking thingy. i tried to google image search for a diagram but to no avail. take a picture and someone here should be able to direct you better.
