Hoping some of you more domestic ILM types might have some helpful handy Heloise type tip for me.
Our dishes come out of the dishwasher almost worse than they went in. I'm not talking streaks or splotches, i'm talking foodstuffs in the cups, on the outer rims of bowls, etc. We've tried both powder and gel, same problem. We tried Jet Dry and it didn't make a bit of difference.
My question is - is there a brand that eliminates this problem entirely? or maybe a clever way to load the dishes (maybe cups face UP?) or something? or do we just have to face the facts that we're going to have to RINSE the dishes before they go in? Do you rinse your dishes? Call me lazy, but isn't that why people get a dishwasher - to not have to clean dishes?

― Surmounter, Friday, 16 May 2008 13:09 (seventeen years ago)

u r gross. that food will clog the drain and stink, too. still, though, a good dishwasher should clean the plates nevertheless. turn your water heater ALL THE WAY UP.

I have a dishwasher, I call it Mike.
― RabiesAngentleman, Friday, 16 May 2008 13:21 (seventeen years ago)
Are you clearing the plates of excess food? Have you tried running it to see if it's still dirty? If so may be that there is something obstructing the drainage pipe.

Other possibilty, are you allowing the water jet sprayer to spin freely. If you're overfilling the washer it won't do it's job properly.

There are one or two brands of dishwasher that you don't have to rinse the food off - they have a higher pressure nozzle system and also a built-in garbage disposal. But even with those, you definitely don't want to put a pan full of bacon grease in. Gel detergents are generally better (higher amount of caustic agent + dissolve more evenly/quicker) - you could try using more and if your dishwasher has a soak setting, use that. There are also some tricks in loading - basically, you don't want things like large flattish casserole pans to block the spray. Stand them on edge, or wash them by hand. Jet Dry and other rinsing agents just keep your glasses from spotting from the final rinse. </heloise>

Thnaks, that was helpful!
I guess we're just going to start rinsing. I mean, it's not like we don't scrape plates, were not putting casseroles in there, just messy dishes. But I see now the error of my ways.

I don't rinse my dishes and they come out fine. Just sayin.
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 16 May 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, me neither. Maybe it's the dishwasher?
― Nicole, Friday, 16 May 2008 15:08 (seventeen years ago)
fill it up with clean dishes and see if they come out dirty
then you'll know
― Surmounter, Friday, 16 May 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)
Messy dishes, or dishes with solids still stuck to them? You can't put dishes with solid crap (salsa with chunks, etc) on them into the dishwasher. You can use the ultra-strength dishwasher liquid, but that stuff's wretched for the environment.
Rinsing versus not rinsing versus actually leaving food clumps on the plate might be the issue here.

When did you last clean the filter and spray arms? If they aren't clear nothing will get clean. Also check nothing stops them from spinning, No rinsing should be required.

If you put the cups in facing up, they will just fill up with scummy water.

How old is the dishwasher? I never really used one until a place I lived a year ago and it was old as hell (like 80's "high-tech computer typeface" old) and didn't clean dishes very well. But we bought a new one last summer for the house we bought and it cleans like 100x better than the 80's one. It also seems to have some sort of built-in food grinder, which most of the new ones seem to have.
We still have to rinse certain things, especially if we know they're going to sit in there for a couple days before we run it.
As an aside, buying a dishwasher and refrigerator at Sears during a Father's Day sale was the most "LOL we're old" thing I think I've ever done.

i need to buy a new dishwasher. who does good memorial day sales on these kinds of things? (and who ideally would do the new install and uninstall and remove the old unit). Sears?
― Mordy, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:23 (ten years ago)
I just got one from Sears last month. It was still $150 for the install but there was no way I could do it myself and they were very professonal; I refuse to use places like Best Buy anymore because the people they contract to install things are terrible (where I live anyway)

i feel like there are some ppl who are so savvy at getting deals on retail things - generally the same ppl who understand how their airline miles work.
― Mordy, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:36 (ten years ago)
I tried to buy from sears outlet online; search for that, you might find something good (I didn't, near me) but they will have refurbished or open box things for like, 1/2 off.

Lowe's and Home Depot also do dishwasher sales and installations.

Our Sears Kenmore has been entirely adequate for our needs. HAs lasted more than a dozen years so far.
