I am arriving at JFK on 10 June and will be around for a week or so. Assuming that anyone on this rig remembers who the heck I am, does anyone want to meet?

the pinefox, Friday, 16 May 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

the original: oh, what beautiful grey and silver days they were:
Pinefox in NYC

the pinefox, Friday, 16 May 2008 21:46 (seventeen years ago)

this double-edged tribute about the best impression I ever got (not perfect but ... something):

--
looking around, i wonder, is that fear, or, perhaps merely a manhattan shudder?, as one contemplates the $4 that must be paid, a tithe, a tribute even, this hidden tax (a tax!), that depletes the wallet, and the heart, in an even measure. the parting of the man, and his money, not quite the farewells of stanley and livingstone, but of note, still.
the man Hand, content with the release of funds, a pinnacle of out of state pioneering spirit, leads us to pastures new, a shared bar tab, the possibility of comradeship in funds, yank entrepenueralism played out in miniature, not quite Duke returning from defeat to wealth, but something,

again, in a misty cab, a sense of wonder pervades, as another tip must be paid, entitlement must be serviced, for the mere driving of a cab, through these mean streets (mean! yet the palms must be greased!). One wonders, who shall last longer, an englishman abroad, or his depleted funds? not quite Tyson and Holyfield, but a sepian Joyce, i shouldn't wonder

As the sun fades, and the smokers line up outside (like White Hart Lane in 1981, not quite Ardliles and Villa, but a yank tribute?), i wonder, is it possible to even sleep here. if so, i'm not sure how, is it required to tip the guardian of the land of nod, not quite Irving's Winkle, but greater, surely, greater than Pleat's Anderton?

pinefox, I have emailed you.

tokyo rosemary, Friday, 16 May 2008 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

Darn it, pinefox, you will have left by the time of my NYC visit.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 16 May 2008 22:30 (seventeen years ago)

Hooray, I hope to see Tokyo Rosemary encore!

Oh, alas, no Raggett Mania.

the pinefox, Friday, 16 May 2008 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

hurrah!

youn, Friday, 16 May 2008 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

I've never seen that Gareth post before - that is pretty much the best Pinefox impression I've seen.

Matt DC, Friday, 16 May 2008 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

New Haven is only 1 hr 40-50 min by train. But of course I will go to NYC.

youn, Friday, 16 May 2008 22:47 (seventeen years ago)

Pants Yell! at Pianos on Friday, June 13, at 8
Farenheit 451 at the Whitney Humanities Center on Saturday, June 14, at 1

youn, Friday, 16 May 2008 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

Hello, Youn - it's nice to know that somebody is interested. As well as ms Tokyo whose contact is much appreciated.

DC, I agree, it's a lot more creative than most of the rubbish that has sailed under the name of pinefox impressions (he was pastiching some specific texts that I wrote about NYC: links on original thread) - but it's still not quite accurate. But yes, a lot better than the usual disappointments; he saw the lyricism.

the pinefox, Friday, 16 May 2008 23:03 (seventeen years ago)

or do I mean ms Rosemary?

the pinefox, Friday, 16 May 2008 23:03 (seventeen years ago)

Should I get time, I'd like to visit New Haven, but I'm not sure how practical that would be. Hm ... how about a New Haven FAP, and a gang of ilx characters commuting to it?

the pinefox, Friday, 16 May 2008 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, hey, this is terrific! I'll be around.

I've never seen that Gareth post before - that is pretty much the best Pinefox impression I've seen.

"not quite" twice in same sentence twice; I doubt the OP would have done that?

anatol_merklich, Saturday, 17 May 2008 03:50 (seventeen years ago)

No, I wouldn't; those original posts were very carefully drafted. G was really just picking up on a few motifs or tendencies; the Tottenham references are especially droll.

Nabisco, have you heard of this thing, called "e-mail"? It's convenient.

the pinefox, Saturday, 17 May 2008 09:58 (seventeen years ago)

Gabbneb is quite the maitre of the calendar.

the pinefox, Saturday, 17 May 2008 09:59 (seventeen years ago)

I need somewhere to stay, for this trip.

I've been recommended this, which I must admit has a cool website:
http://www.gershwinhotel.com/

Tin Pan Alley and all! It could hardly be better for me. Bunk beds at $40 they say. But does anyone have any alternative recommendations?

the pinefox, Monday, 19 May 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

http://www.hotel17ny.com

I stayed here. It's really cheap, great location and although the decor is pretty retro it's clean, comfortable and warm. Which is all you need if you're only going to be sleeping there.

Matt DC, Monday, 19 May 2008 13:51 (seventeen years ago)

thanks DC!

I am puzzled by how coy most sites are about their prices.

the pinefox, Monday, 19 May 2008 13:53 (seventeen years ago)

Hm - that'll be eleven hundred dollars.

the pinefox, Monday, 19 May 2008 13:55 (seventeen years ago)

I am around this weekend, anyone fancy a drink in the sunshine on sunday?

Ed, Monday, 19 May 2008 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

Now that's what I call a THREAD HIJACK

http://www.travelnotes.org:80/Hotels/Budget/new_york_city.htm

can these be true? astoundingly cheap next to DC's page.

the pinefox, Monday, 19 May 2008 15:19 (seventeen years ago)

thanks, Redd, btw! as it happens my birthday is just after I leave NYC, but you're very close.

the pinefox, Monday, 19 May 2008 15:19 (seventeen years ago)

Does anyone fancy an unlucky Friday 13th FAP, or a lucky Saturday 14th FAP?

If anyone would like to go for eats including lunch some time, that would be nice too.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 19:36 (seventeen years ago)

Yesssss, sorry, I am an unlikely email correspondent, at best. I'll be avail on Friday afternoon since work ends early and usually I really want a drink by then, but I'm out of town all day Sat. So let's do something on Fri afternoon/eve?

Laurel, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 19:45 (seventeen years ago)

Hope so! Nice that you'll be around, Laurel!

the pinefox, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 19:59 (seventeen years ago)

Has anyone tried out the Pod hotel - it looks interesting?

http://www.thepodhotel.com/yourpod.html

On my recent visit I stayed at the Hotel Empire on 63rd: a good place but a lot more pricey.

http://www.empirehotelnyc.com/

Bob Six, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

Um, the Pod hotel may offer iPod docking stations, but a bunk bed room costs $169.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 21:53 (seventeen years ago)

I thought you were talking about this place.

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 21:54 (seventeen years ago)

Has anyone heard of the Larchmont Hotel?
http://www.larchmonthotel.com/rates.htm

the pinefox, Thursday, 29 May 2008 09:41 (seventeen years ago)

DC and Ally's fave hotel 17 is booked up.

the pinefox, Thursday, 29 May 2008 09:42 (seventeen years ago)

I think we stayed at the Larchmont in 2004, unless my memory is playing tricks on me. It's nice enough. We saw Sydney Pollack and Sean Penn down the street.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 29 May 2008 09:43 (seventeen years ago)

Crikey, did you?

(I'll post a picture of Sean Penn in a minute to make this unsafe for work.)

the pinefox, Thursday, 29 May 2008 09:45 (seventeen years ago)

ok well im super drunk right now after playing bass in an awesome metal show and i have a hot chick waiting for me in my bed so ill say this:

fuck tom and his nu style of banning whatever he wants whenever he wants (sans admin log)

hey.. if i was a dude in his 30's, post failed marriage from an ilx chick, in a dead end job that never got laid, and had barely any irl friends i would love anonymously modding ilx too...

basically: this is the only thing dude has control of in his life.

even when he gets drunk he spends his time modding ilx. kinda sad.
fine.

you can say 6000 registered ilxors were good today but one of them that was actually totally cool, brought the lols and was a solid dude got banned for no reason was enough for me to say "fuck this shit"

tom millar obviously loves the "this is the thread where i say"
style of pussy ass bullshit posts that make ilx terrible. just see idiot thread board for that bullshit. its basically the same 4 ilxors talking about their bullshit lives that no one asked about plus tom telling us how wasted he is.

its like an episode of sex in the city with tom and ned adding in there 2 cents once in a while. wow what bunch of lols.

im not one to make a big post about leaving but fuck this shit. for reals. im leaving for gershy who is a real bro and "GOD FORBID!!!!" bumped threads that already existed....

this board is now just a bunch of rich college kids and dumb fat bitches (lets get real.... even the actual rock stars that post here are academic morons.) that wanna talk about the politics of messenger bags and facebook profiles. obviously tom wanted this. you can tell by his "dudes im totally wasted!" posts all over the dumb ass molify lingbert thread. so hay! you got what you wanted, tom!

i hope your life of never getting laid by anyone other than ally and being stuck in a dead end job is finally giving you what you wanted in life. everyone hates you btw. but hey as long as you rule who gives a fuck right?

chaki, Thursday, 29 May 2008 09:46 (seventeen years ago)

I am touched that you have chosen this thread, as well as the Suzanne Vega one, to voice these thoughts.

the pinefox, Thursday, 29 May 2008 09:50 (seventeen years ago)

At least this kind of action should keep pinefox in NYC on new answers.

the pinefox, Thursday, 29 May 2008 09:50 (seventeen years ago)

Better than a bump!

the pinefox, Thursday, 29 May 2008 10:48 (seventeen years ago)

I am looking at Brooklyn Hotels.

since so many people on ilx live in Brooklyn, are they sure they cannot recommend one for under $100?

the pinefox, Thursday, 29 May 2008 10:48 (seventeen years ago)

wow, check out the Union Street B&B

Very dirty. Ended up having to fumigate our apartment for the bedbugs that we brought home with us.

Management response from
jojo405, owner of business
This response saddens me because it is not true. We do not have bedbugs, and we have never had bedbugs. When this guest stayed renovations to the hallway of the building were being conducted. As a consequence there may have been more dust in the hallways and the presence of workmen. I'm sorry that these guests were affected. This was...

the pinefox, Thursday, 29 May 2008 10:50 (seventeen years ago)

Hello The Pinefox!

I stayed at http://www.whitehousehotelofny.com/ and I don't think you would like it.

the ceilings consist of open "latticework" so that sound does travel across the entire floor of room which also means you can climb out of your 'room' and into the next one!

Hello Everyone!, Thursday, 29 May 2008 11:03 (seventeen years ago)

yes that detail was what put me off

It means "The Trees." Not to be confused with Dubois, Idaho, meaning "The Trees."

Abbott, Friday, 30 May 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

Oddly I will be in nyc on the 10th too. But then I am there now until Tuesday if anyone FAP's.

Pete, Saturday, 31 May 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

OK, Tokyo Rosemary just suggested we should go to Coney Island. I haven't been in truly twenty years - anyone want to do this, Sat 14 / Sun 15? Also Prospect Park: don't think I've ever been. Will Coney Island be better on a Sat or a Sun?

the pinefox, Monday, 2 June 2008 11:25 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry, I meant I;m back on the 9th! Though I am around today too.

Pete, Monday, 2 June 2008 11:55 (seventeen years ago)

I went to the barber's today and this lady who cut my hair, 21 years old and 5 months pregnant, said I should go to Coney Island. It was made famous, she said, by the film THE WARRIORS. That's what made Coney Island famous. She sang a couple of songs that she thought might be the theme of THE WARRIORS, or The Warriors. She also told me that all the crazy people are in New York, and America - she didn't know why, but people who like to 'sleep with their cars' for instance can only be found there. We decided at the end though that Lewisham might be full of crazy people too.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 13:16 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe you'd better not go to Coney Island after all, the pinefox, I don't think the real place can live up to that woman's imagination.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 13:17 (seventeen years ago)

coney island pretty much realizes the whole 'melting pot' idea. it's like every possible type of person ever in one place combined w/ sensory overload and 32oz cups of beer.

tehresa, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 21:51 (seventeen years ago)

I'm in NYC on friday and def going to Coney Island - it's closing right?

mmmm, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 23:48 (seventeen years ago)

coney island lives in in dreams begin responsibilities by delmore schwartz; but the place with all those crowds: i don't know it

youn, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 00:02 (seventeen years ago)

The source of the name is pretty much as I thought:

--

The Dutch name for the island was Conyne Eylandt,[1] or Konijn Eiland (Rabbit Island) using modern Dutch spelling. This name is found on the New Netherland map of 1639 by Johannes Vingboon. (New York State and New York City were originally a Dutch colony and settlement, named Nieuw Nederlandt and Nieuw Amsterdam.) As with other Long Island barrier islands, Coney Island was virtually overrun with rabbits, and rabbit hunting was common until the resorts were developed and most open space eliminated. It is generally accepted by scholars[2][3] that Coney Island is the English adaptation of the Dutch name, Konijn Eiland. Coney is also an obsolete and dialectical English word for rabbit. Coney came into the English language through Old French (Conil), which derives from the Latin word for rabbit, cuniculus The English name "Conney Isle" was used on maps as early as 1690[4] and by 1733 the modern spelling "Coney Island" was used.[5] The John Eddy map of 1811 also uses the modern "Coney Island" spelling.[6]

Even though the history of Coney Island's name and its Anglicization can be traced through historical maps spanning the 17th century to the present,[7] and all the names translate to "Rabbit Island" in modern English, there are still those who contend that the name derives from other sources. Some say that early English settlers named it Coney Island after its cone-like hills. Others claim that an Irish captain named Peter O'Connor had, in the 1700s, named Coney Island after an island (Inishmulclohy) in County Sligo, Ireland. Yet another purported origin is from the name of the Indian tribe (the Konoh tribe) who supposedly once inhabited it. A further claim is that the island is named after Henry Hudson's "right-hand-man" John Coleman, supposed to have been slain by Indians.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 08:08 (seventeen years ago)

So in fact is the chronology:

--

Coney Island became a resort after the Civil War as excursion railroads and the Coney Island & Brooklyn Railroad streetcar line reached the area in the 1860s. With the rail lines, steamship lines and access to the beach came major hotels and public and private beaches, followed by horse racing, amusement parks, and less reputable entertainments such as Three-card Monte, other gambling entrepreneurs, and prostitution.

When the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company electrified the steam railroads and connected Brooklyn to Manhattan via the Brooklyn Bridge at the beginning of the 20th century, Coney Island turned rapidly from a resort to an accessible location for day-trippers seeking to escape the summer heat in New York City's tenements.

Charles I. D. Looff, a Danish woodcarver, built the first carousel at Coney Island in 1876. It was installed at Vandeveer's bath-house complex at West 6th Street and Surf Avenue. The complex was later called Balmer's Pavilion. The carousel consisted of hand-carved horses and animals standing two abreast. Two musicians, a drummer and a flute player, provided the music. A metal ring-arm hung on a pole outside the ride, feeding small, iron rings for eager riders to grab. A tent-top protected the riders from the weather. The fare was five cents.

Nathan's Famous original hot dog stand opened on Coney Island in 1916 and quickly became a landmark. An annual hot dog eating contest has been held there on July 4 since its opening, but has only attracted broad attention and international television coverage during the last decade.

In 1915 the Sea Beach Line was upgraded to a subway line, followed by the other former excursion roads, and the opening of the New West End Terminal in 1919 ushered in Coney Island's busiest era.[9]

After World War II, contraction began seriously from a series of pressures. Air conditioning in movie theaters and then in homes, along with the advent of automobiles, which provided access to the less crowded and more appealing Long Island state parks, especially Jones Beach, lessened the attractions of Coney's beaches. Luna Park closed in 1946 after a series of fires and the street gang problems of the 1950s spilled over into Coney Island.

Subsidized apartments for low-income residents around Coney Island. The presence of threatening youths did not impact the beachgoing so much as it discouraged visitors to the rides and concessions - the staples of the Coney Island economy. A major blow was struck in 1964 when Steeplechase Park, the last of the major parks, closed.

The builder and New York City Parks Commissioner Robert Moses actively opposed the "tawdry" entertainment at Coney and discouraged the building of new amusements. Housing projects, for low and moderate incomes, were built in what had been amusement areas, and the aquarium project, where Dreamland once stood, reduced the available area for more traditional amusements.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 08:10 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't know that the Nathan's that Carey et al had frequented was so historic; I have probably eaten a hot dog from it myself once upon a time (that is, August 1988).

I wonder a little if the 'Dreamland' is the same one as in the song sung by Joni Mitchell and Roger McGuinn in the 1970s.

Look! "The Warriors by Sol Yurick is the 1965 novel that the 1979 movie with the same name (see above) was based upon. The novel itself is loosely based upon Anabasis by Xenophon."

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 08:14 (seventeen years ago)

anyway, in a week I will be waking up in Greenwich Village, so I hope some of you will be free for fun.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 08:15 (seventeen years ago)

Rosemary says: Prospect Park then Coney Island, Sat 14th. anyone want to come with us?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 10:46 (seventeen years ago)

Rosemary's plans include

W'burg craft fair Sat 11am
Prospect Park picnic 1:30
Prospect Park Carousel
Coney Island afternoon

anyone wants to come, maybe they can

unless Rosemary says they're not allowed.

the pinefox, Monday, 9 June 2008 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

anyone want to watch a footy match some slow evening?

the pinefox, Monday, 9 June 2008 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

or are they going to be on earlier in the day? hm.

I'm talking about Euro 2008 on TV anyway.

the pinefox, Monday, 9 June 2008 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

You know, Zoe, I think this picnic might just be me and you.

the pinefox, Monday, 9 June 2008 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

I'm gone all day Sat to watch a footy match in DC. Soz!

I have a vague recollection of setting aside Friday afternoon or evening, though?

Laurel, Monday, 9 June 2008 18:19 (seventeen years ago)

yes, Laurel, you did. Friday afternoon is out for me, I think. but how about maybe ... some kind of FAP on Friday pm?

I would like to combine it with Euro footy but am thinking that just takes place too early in your day.

3-0, hooray.

the pinefox, Monday, 9 June 2008 22:00 (seventeen years ago)

I get out of work around 1pm on Fri. If that helps.

Laurel, Monday, 9 June 2008 22:04 (seventeen years ago)

It would be terrific to watch a footy match on telly with you that afternoon. the trouble is, I am supposed to be at an academic event at that time. Bah.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

(I really shouldn't complain about the academic event, I wouldn't be going all that way without it)

the pinefox, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 00:09 (seventeen years ago)

well I am in town

in fact I'm in the Apple store downtown

hello New Yorkers

I hope to see you

I bought a new mobile phone - a second one! - so I could call people
but don't think I know the # to give you

let us make plans, I hope

maybe even Nabisco will show up. hope so

the pinefox, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

Welcome!

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 12 June 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

why did you buy a US mobile phone if you are only there for 10 days??? was it that cheap?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 12 June 2008 15:09 (seventeen years ago)

You are a few minutes away from the Portuguese restaurant where I watched the Czech Republic-Portugal match yesterday, pinefox.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 12 June 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

$15 bucks for a phone and sim in radio shack is pretty worthwhile for 10 days organising with folks.

Ed, Thursday, 12 June 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

sure beats being payphone reliant (ahem morbius)

tehresa, Thursday, 12 June 2008 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

Haha wau the amount of money I wasted on phonecalls last time.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 12 June 2008 15:14 (seventeen years ago)

Ed, Thursday, 12 June 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)

does he check his "voicemail" (IIRC an "answering machine") from payphones?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 12 June 2008 15:18 (seventeen years ago)

Okay what are we doing on Fri, and when? I can go somewhere early-ish to grab tables if nec. In my experience drinking establishments tend to open around 4pm earliest which is okay cos I have lots of errands/duties tomorrow...maybe Lakeside/Boxcar again?

Pinefox, for your information these bars are next to each other over on Avenue B and 11th-ish, I don't know where yr staying? They do both open at 4 and offer smoking and food options nearby.

Laurel, Thursday, 12 June 2008 15:28 (seventeen years ago)

dear the pinefox -
Do you really love Lloyd Cole a lot?
Because he lives just a few blocks away from me in Easthampton, MA.

aimurchie, Thursday, 12 June 2008 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

yes
xpost

tehresa, Thursday, 12 June 2008 15:31 (seventeen years ago)

I secretly just REALLY want another avocado-and-bacon grilled cheese sandwich from Life Cafe. Actually I want about four.

Laurel, Thursday, 12 June 2008 15:31 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha i bought some avocados and tomatoes yesterday and was thinking i should run out for cheese and/or bacon so i can make them at home!

tehresa, Thursday, 12 June 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry I won't be able to make it tonight. I'm sure it will be splendid. What will the Pinefox do come Saturday evening?

youn, Thursday, 12 June 2008 23:12 (seventeen years ago)

Wait.. Saturday is the Sci Fi Film Festival, so I think I'll have to stay in New Haven, but maybe this FAP on Friday will shape up..

youn, Friday, 13 June 2008 00:30 (seventeen years ago)

Lakeside Lounge is where I met Matt DC when he was here--hmm . . . maybe we can maneuver over to Rififi as well if it is still open.

Virginia Plain, Friday, 13 June 2008 01:42 (seventeen years ago)

My friend Trouble played a Pinefox song on her radio show today - I don't know if she knew he was in town or not (she does now).

tokyo rosemary, Friday, 13 June 2008 02:09 (seventeen years ago)

Where will the Pinefox go today? And on Bloomsday?

youn, Sunday, 15 June 2008 06:07 (seventeen years ago)

spied from a funeral procession in a broad hat, on foot?

youn, Sunday, 15 June 2008 06:09 (seventeen years ago)

thank you, America, for contributing to this thread in my absence. thanks to those who came out to see me; it was a pleasure and I have photographic evidence, even of the existence of Dr Morbius. those I did not get to see, regrets. I had a busy and often quite enthralling time, in all. I can report back further if anyone is interested. oh, and extra thanks to Carey for putting me up the last night. I am shattered now having not really slept for 30 hrs or whatever, but need to get on a train to Sussex and appear to be a highly responsible person.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 12:44 (seventeen years ago)

Trouble played a Pinefox song

:o

(too bad I can't hear her)

I have just remembered the existence of BEER ISLAND. I'm sure Ally and someone - Laurel? Mary? - were debating it at the fap, one of them saying it sounded promising, the other warning, no, it's just a load of sand and you can buy beer. The latter view was correct, anyway. It was just a load of sand and you could buy beer. It was not far from the actual beach, but unlike the beach you presumably must pay to enter. I did hear 'Hungry Heart' playing from the compound, though; maybe that justified any expense.
