Cannes 2008: Which film will get Palmed?

I'm doing this out of habit now. All those critics getting axed recently has seemingly cut down on the usual avenues for buzz.

Hint: http://www.indiewire.com/movies/2008/05/cannes_08_noteb.html

Oh, a Desplechin Palme would be sweet!

Eric H., Tuesday, 20 May 2008 02:58 (seventeen years ago)

I think the Eastwood has good buzz too. He hasn't won yet.

Eric H., Tuesday, 20 May 2008 03:00 (seventeen years ago)

ye gods the drudge headline when sean penn gives it to a che biopic

balls, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 03:50 (seventeen years ago)

the rumor is that the prize is reserved for Eastwood, which is no surprise when Penn is man in charge.

Zeno, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 03:58 (seventeen years ago)

is Blindness an adaptation of Saramago?

really curious about the french movies here (DESPLECHIN and GARREL - both made great movies before this one)

Zeno, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 04:00 (seventeen years ago)

plus
Cannes 2008 - who will win?

Zeno, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 04:02 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, maybe Desplechin gets the grand prix and Eastwood gets the palme.

Was that thread in ILF?

Eric H., Tuesday, 20 May 2008 04:21 (seventeen years ago)

no, ILE.
anyway, it actually depends if the Desplechin film is actullay good (though chances are low that it isnt a good one), while Eastwood will probably win weather he made a good movie or a mediocre one

Zeno, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 04:30 (seventeen years ago)

uhhh... I believe Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is debuting at Cannes. Surely this is the hands-down favorite to win, no?

Viceroy, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 04:41 (seventeen years ago)

"is Blindness an adaptation of Saramago?"

it is apparently, with Julian Moore and Mark Ruffalo.

LINHA DE PASSE directed by Walter SALLES, Daniela THOMAS - got great reviews after its screeninf

Zeno, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 04:45 (seventeen years ago)

it's not on the contest.
(the general opinion is that it was good btw)

Zeno, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 04:46 (seventeen years ago)

naively rooting for Kaufman.

Simon H., Tuesday, 20 May 2008 04:50 (seventeen years ago)

here is a review of the Arnaud Desplechin's film.
looks like it's a sort of a Kings and queen sort of a movie yet again, which is great.

"This could have been an emotionally wrenching film, but Desplechin keeps the tone light, infusing the drama with humor in the most unexpected places, and offers Henri's girlfriend, Faunia (frequent Desplechin actress Emmanuelle Devos), as the amused Shakespearean witness to the whole affair to lighten the heavy load. Performances by all the cast are excellent. "

Zeno, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 05:04 (seventeen years ago)

also, it seems Vicky Cristina Barcelona, the Woody Allen film, gets good reviews, (no nudity though, despite the rumors)

Zeno, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 05:16 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, the Desplechin film is supposed to be good. Will be seeing it in the next few days as it opens wed. I'm willing to bet that no French movies get the Palme d'or. Or if one does, then I hope it's Desplechin and not Garrel whose movies I cannot stand.

Jibe, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 09:34 (seventeen years ago)

i've never heard of Desplechin! i'm tipping Garrel ftw based on... absolutely nothing.

jed_, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 11:39 (seventeen years ago)

Desplechin - Almodovar meets Woody Allen and Cassavetes in France

Zeno, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 11:59 (seventeen years ago)

i would avoid based on that description to be honest.

jed_, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 12:03 (seventeen years ago)

Kings & Queen is probably a little bit more Robert Altman than Woody Allen.

Eric H., Tuesday, 20 May 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)

And, yeah, clearly Indiana Jones is the favorite to win.

Eric H., Tuesday, 20 May 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

I can't even theoretically give a damn.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

That's too bad, because at least you live in a city where more than two or three of these movies might see the light of day.

Eric H., Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

yes, like last year's Cannes script winner, the mediocre Edge of Heaven.

I'm interested in a lot of those, which comes with the gold has nothing to do with it!

(also, seen Wind That Shakes the Barley yet?)

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

I think Rivette is the more obvious Desplechin than any of those other guys.

C0L1N B..., Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

Well, maybe Cassavetes. But Woody Allen? Really?

C0L1N B..., Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

"4 months" won last year and is superb

Zeno, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

Woody Allen: think about Mathieu Amalric neurotic character on "kinks and Queen"

Zeno, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

Jed, based on nothing more than that we had identical favourite films of 2007, I think you'd love Kings and Queen. (I oughta thank Tracey Hand some time for turning me on to it.)

I'm also keen to see the Terence Davies Liverpool film...

Stevie T, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, the Davies sounds possibly great.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

but yeah, that 9/11 documetary also won. this poll is jsut an excuse to talk about the films i guess.

Zeno, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

looking forward to a few of these... kinda intrigued by the james gray.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

also the desplechin.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:23 (seventeen years ago)

Stevie T, i may give Desplechin a look based on that alone. i will actually have a chance to see the Terence Davies at the edinburgh film festival next month. really excited for that and the arthur russell doc.

jed_, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

"is Blindness an adaptation of Saramago?"

it is apparently, with Julian Moore and Mark Ruffalo.

Holy shit, I want to see this! The Saramago book is one my favourite novels ever.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:56 (seventeen years ago)

i can't imagine i'd be excited to see a film of one of my favourite novels. especially not if it was directed by Fernando Meirelles.

jed_, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 17:00 (seventeen years ago)

I never had much interest in reading the book, since I'm allergic to allegories, but I was excited about the movie since it seemed it could work on a purely showy, suspenseful basis. Then I read the Manohla Dargis pan.

jaymc, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know who he is, to be honest. But I think the book's premise could make for a great film, like a philosophical post-apocalypse movie. Don't know how a movie could capture Saramago's unique narrative tone though.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

sorry, i'm exhausted and grumpy. i did hate "city of god" though.

jed_, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 17:06 (seventeen years ago)

Dargis was funny on Meirelles ... City of God had "lots of bullets and no brains."

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 17:07 (seventeen years ago)

(I actually thot it was a good Dead End Kids movie, nothing more)

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 17:08 (seventeen years ago)

ya for sure. not a masterpiece but i liked it.

blindness looks like it sucks ass, thank you self-important canadian screenwriting.

and i'm a fan of the book.

Palme 2008: Which film will get Canned?

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

http://www.timeout.com/film/features/show-feature/4854/cannes-2008-diary-of-time-and-the-city.html

^^^ out of competition but intriguing. would probably make a good double-bill with my winnipeg.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 17:21 (seventeen years ago)

I could see Jia Zhangkhe win the Palme. He's a festival favourite everytime by now and his film appears to good from what I've heard.
Another festival favourite who you hear might win every time, the Dardenne bros. who've already won twice in less than ten years (can't remember the exact date when Rosetta won, 1999?) but the one right now is not rumoured to be very good and it'd be awkward to see them win 3 times in 10 years. The Waltz with Bachir movie is apparently quite good. And after last year's cartoon favorite, Persepolis, who knows it might just happen...

Jibe, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

yes, i'm really surprised it's not in competition. i wonder why?

xpost

jed_, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 17:26 (seventeen years ago)

Variety has a bunch of Cannes reviews. Sounds like Eastwood will indeed win it.

Eazy, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 17:41 (seventeen years ago)

anyone written about Synecdoche?

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 17:43 (seventeen years ago)

i think it wasnt screend yet

Zeno, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 17:52 (seventeen years ago)

Hoberman says Desplechin is the best of the fest so far ... or the most depressing. Can't quite tell.

jed_, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 23:36 (seventeen years ago)

any word on the egoyan film? he's one of my favorite filmmakers but his last one got panned so badly it seems like it kind of set back his career

akm, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 23:40 (seventeen years ago)

(in fact, it got panned so badly, I never bothered watching it; I did buy the dvd for $3 though, and still haven't watched it)

akm, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 23:41 (seventeen years ago)

haaa i didn't even know he had a new one

s1ocki, Thursday, 22 May 2008 04:27 (seventeen years ago)

ppl getting excited about James Gray may be way too wishful.

Jed are you thinking of Screengrab on Nerve?

Eric H., Thursday, 22 May 2008 04:45 (seventeen years ago)

exactly that, Eric, thanks.

ILX System, Saturday, 24 May 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

will the jury take these votes into account?

jed_, Sunday, 25 May 2008 00:29 (seventeen years ago)

They didn't last year.

Eric H., Sunday, 25 May 2008 06:43 (seventeen years ago)

Associate of mine at the fest says the best film he's seen so far was the Egoyan.

Simon H., Sunday, 25 May 2008 13:35 (seventeen years ago)

i'm really extremely excited about the Terence Davies film.

jed_, Sunday, 25 May 2008 13:51 (seventeen years ago)

with sean penn leading the jury and people liking it enough to want to make sure it has a commercial future, i think they'll go for che.

caek, Sunday, 25 May 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

with sean penn leading the jury i think they'll go for che.

Or the Clint Eastwood film.

DavidM, Sunday, 25 May 2008 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

che is the commercial underdog though. maybe the jury feel like it needs the help. when is the announcement?

caek, Sunday, 25 May 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

this evening, i think the ceremony has maybe started.

Sean Penn says Cannes jury needs anti-Oscar spirit

CANNES, France (AFP) — As the countdown began Saturday to the Cannes film festival's Palme d'Or prize ceremony, jury president Sean Penn said his panel should "do just the opposite" of the Oscars and crown a groundbreaking, unconventional film.

Eric H., Sunday, 25 May 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

Simon H., Sunday, 25 May 2008 17:52 (seventeen years ago)

Steve McQueen wins the Camera D'Or.

jed_, Sunday, 25 May 2008 17:52 (seventeen years ago)

what's the diff between the Grand Prix and the Prix du Jury?

jed_, Sunday, 25 May 2008 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

Prix du Jury is sort of like the bronze medal, right?

Eric H., Sunday, 25 May 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway, the lack of awards for Eastwood so far has me definitely sensing a Palme for him.

Eric H., Sunday, 25 May 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

Prix de 61st Festival de Cannes: Catherine Deneuve ("Un Conte de noel") and Clint Eastwood ("The Exchange")

They do this crap every time, don't they?

Eric H., Sunday, 25 May 2008 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

so maybe it's Laurent Cantet after all

Eric H., Sunday, 25 May 2008 18:05 (seventeen years ago)

is that like a special consolation award for old timers?

xp

jed_, Sunday, 25 May 2008 18:06 (seventeen years ago)

It must be, or a consolation to certain jury members.

Eric H., Sunday, 25 May 2008 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

haha!

jed_, Sunday, 25 May 2008 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

maybe desplechin or the school teacher film will win.

jed_, Sunday, 25 May 2008 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, unless they feel like double awarding, I'm going with the school teacher film

Eric H., Sunday, 25 May 2008 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

i mean "Entre Les Murs" (The Class).

whaddya know?

Laurent Cantet's "Entre Les Murs" won the Palme d'Or as the Cannes Film Festival came to a close tonight in France.

Eric H., Sunday, 25 May 2008 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

Haven't read a thing about it.

Eric H., Sunday, 25 May 2008 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

interesting choice. one of the only comedies amongst the doom and gloom.

jed_, Sunday, 25 May 2008 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

i think it was the last film screened in competition.

jed_, Sunday, 25 May 2008 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

Results just like last year, when none of the < 10 voters picked the Romanian abortion movie FTW.

Eric H., Sunday, 25 May 2008 18:15 (seventeen years ago)

Just kidding. There were 11 voters last year.

Eric H., Sunday, 25 May 2008 18:16 (seventeen years ago)

"Entre Les Murs" isn't a comedy after all although it is supposedly funny.

review: http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/talking_pictures/2008/05/a-marvelous-fre.html

jed_, Sunday, 25 May 2008 18:18 (seventeen years ago)

Eric H., Sunday, 25 May 2008 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

i'm excited to see the new Kelly Reichardt film which was shown out of competition. i liked "Old Joy" a lot.

jed_, Sunday, 25 May 2008 18:24 (seventeen years ago)

and the Che marathon still has no US distrib?

Dardennes get screenplay. There better be one this time around.

Don't count on anything as brilliantly structured as The Fury!

/gratuitous

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 13:40 (seventeen years ago)

I only expect something as reasonably well directed as Pickpocket, for the acclaim they get every time out.

Eric H., Tuesday, 27 May 2008 18:24 (seventeen years ago)

they are the new Paul Schrader!

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 19:01 (seventeen years ago)

five years pass...

i guess this is the thread where i talk about "the class"? i spent a long time trying to find a suitable thread, and in the process found a note from the good sir dr. morbius in which he said that "the class" was the same-old while "time out" and something else were fresh. and i think that is true. like it was v. good but ultimately kind of dull? even now, i remember nothing.
