What's your favorite type of meal?!?!?!

G00blar, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 13:39 (seventeen years ago)

I will wait, biding my time, until more carrrazy Americans wake up.

G00blar, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 14:03 (seventeen years ago)

Feast, for me, but not daily.

Jaq, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)

i'm too gluttonous to have a favorite type of meal.

lauren, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

High Tea - in the Scottish sense of being your tea, but slightly earlier, that being the Scottish "tea", which is your dinner, the Scottish dinner being your lunch

Tom D., Tuesday, 20 May 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

whats prix fixe?

sunny successor, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

breakfast breakfast breakfast breakfast, btw

sunny successor, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

prix fixe is a price fix menu - usually a complete 4 or 5 course meal for a set price.

ENBB, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:09 (seventeen years ago)

prix fixe = you get a certain number of courses for a certain price, but get to pick all of the different components from a couple of choices.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:09 (seventeen years ago)

I should have done this like a tournament bracket.

G00blar, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

i want all of these meals right now. except for salad bar.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:12 (seventeen years ago)

i quite like a salad bar if it comes with pasta and cheese toast (Hi Sizzler!)

sunny successor, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:14 (seventeen years ago)

i love old-style salad bars. crumbled hard-boiled egg, radishes, canned beets, orange "french" dressing - mmm.

lauren, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:14 (seventeen years ago)

oh beets how i love thee

sunny successor, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

i am so sick of salad bars because i end up eating from my work cafeteria's about 3 times a week. i have been making myself go out for lunch more, but it's crappy out, so it will most likely be salad bar again.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)

BBQ

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:19 (seventeen years ago)

Probably brunch if I had to choose, but c'mon, all this meals are needed to make life worth living.

Laurel, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:21 (seventeen years ago)

Plus I've never been to a clambake and want to go, so let's not rule them out just yet.

Laurel, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:21 (seventeen years ago)

cookout ftw

Jordan, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

i really want to do a clambake, but they're very pricey no matter how you do it. catered: very expensive. diy: still pretty expensive and also really time-consuming.

lauren, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:26 (seventeen years ago)

I had to look up what a rijsttafel was (http://www.thingsasian.com/stories-photos/2772). Want!

Jaq, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

i am from maine and i have never been to a clambake! life is so unfair.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

breakfast breakfast breakfast breakfast ftw

maybe one could have a clambake for breakfast?

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)

10 Steps for a Traditional Clambake

1. Dig a pit on the beach, about two feet deep, two feet wide and three feet long.
2. Line the bottom with large stones.
3. Build a wood fire over the stones and keep it burning for about two hours, feeding it when necessary, to heat the rocks. Let the fire burn down to embers, about another two hours.
4. While the fire is winding down, wrap potatoes, littleneck clams, corn on the cob (in husk), onion quarters, mussels and spicy sausages, by group, in cheesecloth or foil.
5. Cover the coals with a thick layer of seaweed, preferably rockweed which has little pockets of sea water, but other seaweeds will work. This provides both protection from direct heat and the required steam.
6. Layer the packets of potatoes, clams, corn, onion, mussels and sausage, and then live lobsters, if desired.
7. Top with another couple inches of seaweed, and if you’re not using rockweed, a couple of quarts of seawater for steaming.
8. Cover the entire pit with a seawater-soaked canvas weighted down with either rocks or sand.
9. Continue your party for another hour or two until all the foods are cooked through.
10. Savor this fabulous summertime feast, served hot with plenty of melted butter and washed down with icy cold beer.

lauren, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

my home town has a CLAM FESTIVAL. but not a bake. i am going home for it this year and bringing my boyfriend.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:35 (seventeen years ago)

I had to look up what a rijsttafel was (http://www.thingsasian.com/stories-photos/2772). Want!

Jaq, at the big FA meetup in Amsterdam last year, the party at our flat was preceded by a rijsttafel for about 20. The only dish I was sure I'd ever had before was the steamed rice. Really fantastic.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

Guys guys guys I'm sorry, this was not the right way to go about this.

G00blar, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:41 (seventeen years ago)

There's only one way that's truly fair.

you don't necessarily get to pick

gabbneb, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

cookout vs. picnic is gonna be a humdinger

G00blar, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

Have your brackets filled out with your picks by Thursday's staff meeting and we'll keep them all in one place.

G00blar, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

that is supoib.

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

also p.f., though often 3 courses, is sometimes 2. a multiple-course menu, though price-fixed, is more often deemed a tasting menu.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

mmm tasting menu
i have only ever had wonderful experiences with these

bell_labs, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

Nice work. Potluck v. Feast is a killer matchup, that could get ugly. What's a table d hote?

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

what's a box lunch as opposed to a bag lunch? is it like a bento box?

bell_labs, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

potentially cracking semi-final between feast and breakfast I'd say.

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

hell, I meant to change high tea to power lunch

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

no, high tea pwns power lunch.

leading to high tea vs. barbecue which is a tantalisingly tricky QF draw.

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

what's a box lunch as opposed to a bag lunch?

one comes in a box, and one comes in a bag

gabbneb, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

picnics are no match for a cookout. i mean, cold cheese sandwiches and wine vs burgers, corn on the cob, and beer?

Jordan, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

aside from packaging differences, i think of a box lunch as something that you're given at an event or buy at a deli whereas a bag lunch is brought from home.

lauren, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

Wait, what kind of picnics are you going to, Jordan? Cold cheese sandwiches would suck. Trad picnic fare is cold fried chicken and salads and coolers of sweet tea and possib a cold pasta salad with tuna, and potato salad, deviled eggs, and so on. I'm not going to say it's my favorite food for all time but it's not bad.

Laurel, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

still got nothing on a summer cookout!

Jordan, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

Well that is what this tournament is for.

Laurel, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

Tbh I don't find regular burgers or dogs very appealing, you know when someone's doing it on the cheap and they bring a case of pre-formed burger patties, possibly frozen, and some Velveeta slices, and a package of Hebrew Nats or whatever and a jar of sweet relish. UUrrrg. The quality has to be higher than that to make me want to cook-out.

Laurel, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think you'll get much resistance on that opinion.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

Or you could just catch the B48, it goes right by there.

Laurel, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

although even here people say barbecue when they really mean grill out.

Jordan, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

ooh maybe laurel. i sent kthleen texts last night about trying to figure something out in the park or on her roof!

bell_labs, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

I will prob not adore all the people at the Clinton Hill thing but will appear to make the hostess happy b/c I love her. If there was something else also going on that I could escape to that would be fine.

Laurel, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

Then I could eat twice as much food.

Laurel, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

"Cookout" is awesome UNLESS it is a "wienie/wiener roast," which is an embarrassment to food, grills, public parks, and humans. Plus it means the next day at the park I have to keep my dog from obsessively hunting down and eating bits of hot dog buns & other uncleaned waste.

Abbott, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

I went to way too many church potlucks that consisted of dozens of variations on au gratin potatoes (hey it's got cornflakes on it!?!) and gelatin desserts to appreciate the concept of the potluck.

Abbott, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

What about Snicker Buns?

G00blar, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

http://www.flamingstar.no/fapr/images/060710_104836-1/file/FTD%20Clambake.jpg
Clambake, gonna have a clambake. Actually, I've never had one but it HAS to be great. Same with rijsttafel .

I also seriously want a real crawfish boil at some point in my life - crawfish, sausage, potatoes, shrimp, whatever all boiled in spicy liquid and dumped on a table to be eaten with melted butter.

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 18:39 (seventeen years ago)

jg, I was going to bring that up w/r/t clambakes, actually! Get one clean metal trash can, fill with layers of things in order of cooking time, dump in 1 tonne of Old Bay seasoning, light fire underneath and bury. Or whatever. YES, PLEASE.

Laurel, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)

Spread newspapers on a trestle table made of the door from the old kitchen and two sawhorses.

Laurel, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 18:43 (seventeen years ago)

lauren's clam bake has me dribbling. poor "live lobsters" though. still, it gets my vote.

table d hote-anyody? the internets aren't helping me out

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

table d'hôte |noun| a restaurant meal offered at a fixed price and with few if any choices.

ORIGIN early 17th cent.: French, literally ‘host's table.’ The term originally denoted a table in a hotel or restaurant where all guests ate together, hence a meal served there at a stated time and for a fixed price.

G00blar, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)

High tea is the only answer...crumpets, tea, scones, victoria sponge...you don't need anything else.

jel --, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

how the fuck can breakfast possibly beat out brunch when brunch is just breakfast plus like ice cream & alcohol & shit

deeznuts, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:06 (seventeen years ago)

^^^This is why they play the games, people.

G00blar, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

So I voted picnic, mostly because there's a unique sort of sense of adventure to that, also picnics so often end in glorious makeouts.

nickalicious, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 20:42 (seventeen years ago)

Although picnic barely just > cookout which is also only barely > a really good brunch > pig roast (not listed) > reckless late night munchies (not listed).

nickalicious, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

i think, to the extent it isn't antiquated at this point, table d'hote would be distinguished from a prix fixe meal in that the latter would refer to an option in addition to an a la carte menu, while the former might describe the only service option available, perhaps in a single seating

gabbneb, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

(but i'm kinda guessing)

gabbneb, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

High tea sounds fun but can an American really have it w/out feeling like a shitty NYC family tourist?

Abbott, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

I was enormously tuomased when the roadie came into the bus, while i was doing an interview with modest mouse, and he said it was time for tea. i was like wtf it's about 7 pm, TEA? then i realized he probably meant dinner.

stevienixed, Thursday, 22 May 2008 19:07 (seventeen years ago)

(xpost) That looks grim. I mean really grim. If there was a meal that summed up "Dickensian", it would be the £1 microwave meal.

chap, Thursday, 22 May 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

maybe so but unfortunately in the current age banquets are usually held by lunch-ladies & school admins looking to make a buck off of alumni or to celebrate the accomplishments of student athletes
