"almost complete lack of moderation"

King Boy Pato, Thursday, 22 May 2008 01:02 (seventeen years ago)

The great strength of ilx is its creativity.

I have not noticed ilx moderation has much interfered with this aspect of ilx. Therefore one may conclude the amount of moderation applied to ilx has been essentially correct.

One might infer from this that the correctness of the moderation lies in its amount, which would (from outward appearances) be an "almost complete lack of" it.

One might infer with equal justice that the correctness of the moderation lies in the good judgement of the moderators. I prefer this second formulation, as it gives credit to the primary source, not to a secondary characteristic.

Aimless, Thursday, 22 May 2008 01:07 (seventeen years ago)

I think that as ILX has evolved it's important to remember that it began with everyone on dialup so the delay inherent in that precluded much of the impulsiveness yr average interweb user now grapples with. It's not that we were any kinder but there was an inbuilt pause that made people flesh out what they had to say about a topic and maybe concentrate more on that than the idiosyncracies of others.

suzy, Thursday, 22 May 2008 01:36 (seventeen years ago)

I would c+p ^^^ into a new thread to troll on "idiosyncrasies" vs. namedrops but since this is the new friendlier ILX I shall simply commend you on yr rather droll and insightful post, old chappette.

libcrypt, Thursday, 22 May 2008 02:03 (seventeen years ago)

I would've agreed about this in 2003, when the lack of moderation wasn't an excuse for some people to act like jerks towards others with no proper reason, besides a few well known trolls. But I think by 2004 or 2005 this was already beginning to change, so I think the stricter moderation ILX has embraced is basically a good thing.

Tuomas, Thursday, 22 May 2008 07:38 (seventeen years ago)

And I don't mean all sort of jerky behaviour should be moderated, only the stuff that exceeds certain critical limits and serves no purpose at all. For example, I don't see how anyone could consider reviving old threads by copy-pasting something someone said 5 years ago as part of ILX's "strength".

Tuomas, Thursday, 22 May 2008 07:43 (seventeen years ago)

Because those days were an ILX golden era, and we're hoping that by c+ping messages from then, we can improve ILX today. It's a classic pinefoxian move.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 22 May 2008 08:17 (seventeen years ago)

Do we really need to do this?

onimo, Thursday, 22 May 2008 09:09 (seventeen years ago)

ILX is light on moderation, but it tends to mean that when the heavy hand of the law jockeys comes down it feels a bit arbitrary.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 22 May 2008 09:39 (seventeen years ago)

It's a classic pinefoxian move.

is this an example of ILX meta-bitchiness?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 22 May 2008 09:56 (seventeen years ago)

I'm very glad that I don't really get this whole meta creepiness insult thing, because it strikes me that a lot of people I otherwise like seem to be making themselves look unpleasant amongst it all. This is an internet messageboard, people, get a grip.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 22 May 2008 10:24 (seventeen years ago)

to an extent the poxy fule era had a similar effect, too.

ken c, Thursday, 22 May 2008 10:27 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't bother with that meta-B thread at all since (a) I don't get all the references to obscure secret boards etc. and (b) we've been through this a thousand times already and nothing ever changes so it's a sledeghammer/nut situation AFAIC.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 22 May 2008 10:28 (seventeen years ago)

I know we've been throught this lots before but what used to set ILX apart from trainwrecks like the board Tom linked to above was the use of full sentences, actually reading other people's posts before responding, and informed (or naive!) enthusiasm for the subject. It'd be great for ILX to make a conscious effort to get back to that. In other words, the importance of being earnest I guess...

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 May 2008 10:46 (seventeen years ago)

The "x-post loss of relevance fear" is probably a driving factor, as is the fact that, possibly, many regular users are now busier / more responsible IRL and so can afford less time to make long posts / make any posts. Kids / jobs precluding forum-based pop.cult. theses. Compared to most messageboards I've seen ILX is still reasoned, intelligent, passionate, etc.

Nick, yes those of us in our late 20's, early 30's are hitting Proper Responsible Adult status. But personally, I'd prefer for the quantity to suffer rather than the quality. Agree that ILX is still wonderful by the way.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 May 2008 11:03 (seventeen years ago)

Two points:

1. ILX stands out in the whole internets for being intelligent. Even the users who some might consider daft are erudite compared to the rubbish that passes as normal on 99.999999% of the world's messageboards. Our ability to do what we're doing right now -- analyse our own behaviour, understand it, get a handle on what it means for the site and its history -- exemplifies this. By now, this exact incident on any other site would have led to 15,000 pages of swearing, excessive smilies, abhorrent spelling and loads of spontaneous abuse in caps.

Tuomas, Thursday, 22 May 2008 12:37 (seventeen years ago)

Dear Nick and Bob,

Where did you get your giant wall-o'-cubic-shelves from? And are the gaps big enough for LPs? I need something like that.

a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 22 May 2008 12:38 (seventeen years ago)

Ikea. Called Expedit, or something. Haven't tried LPs in it but am 99% sure they will be.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 22 May 2008 12:40 (seventeen years ago)

Expedit's the perfect size for LPs. And you can put it either way round, like 2x4 or 4x2, unless you get a 4x4 one which might make a great square wheel, but you'd need a massive room to do it in.

Bocken Social Scene, Thursday, 22 May 2008 12:42 (seventeen years ago)

classic ILX T/S: doing work or asking questions about furniture to cuet cats with Rorschach noses.

Thomas, Thursday, 22 May 2008 12:45 (seventeen years ago)

I thought the whole world had expedit for 12" storage.

Ed, Thursday, 22 May 2008 12:50 (seventeen years ago)

But where is Billy CD shelves? I've ran out of space and I wanted to get them (there's probably another thread for this, right?)

Bocken Social Scene, Thursday, 22 May 2008 12:56 (seventeen years ago)

I'm sure Ed's fancy London media pals all bought Expedit the year before you could buy it in the UK for filing mint copies of every record namechecked in Losing My Edge in, but out here in the sticks some of us live 50 miles from the nearest Ikea and don't know anyone under 60 who owns any vinyl.

a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 22 May 2008 13:00 (seventeen years ago)

That's the shelf in Southall's pix - also Ikea do interweb ordering and delivery now. This is very lucky for me because I want to throw knives after about an hour in one of their stores where I get my fill of loud, bad parents and the happy couples who will become them someday.

I've got the 5x5 cubicle one and a 2x4 one.

suzy, Thursday, 22 May 2008 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

Crushing disappointment of Oxford circa 1999/2000: when they were building that new superstore up Botley Way and we thought it was going to be Ikea and it turned out to be sodding Carpet Shite.

Crushing disappointment of Oxford circa 1999/2000

OTM!
Oh, and the rest of your sentence too, I guess.
(Can you tell I'm in a bad mood today? I cannot wait until my day off tomorrow when I get to head as far away as I can afford from the Botley Rd and hide there for a few days. Coincidentally, there = somewhere with an Ikea, so I'll see if my smug couple/loud parent tolerance is high enough to visit and see if the stock withstands my rattling, then investigate their online ordering. Thanks!)

So, uh, Bob...

a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 22 May 2008 13:33 (seventeen years ago)

We have Billy & Benno shelves in the living room / kitchen bit, with CDs in them, oddly enough.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v236/njsouthall/IMG_9216.jpg

We ordered the Expedit via the new online thingamabob; £69 for the shelves + £15 delivery.

Oh god; those are a VERY old and VERY worn pair of Nike Air Max that I got from JD Sports years and years ago. The tread is almost completely gone, all the plastic has fallen off the tongue, the air bubbles died years ago - I use them as slippers, pretty much. They're all-black bar the insides of the air bubbles, which were yellow, and a little bit of yellow trim / logo on the tongue and heel. Never seen another pair anywhere near as good. Gutting.
