do you ever get this?

i got on the train to work the other day and realised that i'd forgotten to bring a book or paper and got a horrible sinking feeling. i hate feeling bored to the point where i'll feel almost panicky if i don't have something to occupy my mind.

I'm never bored. That's the trouble with everybody - you're all so bored. You've had nature explained to you and you're bored with it, you've had the living body explained to you and you're bored with it, you've had the universe explained to you and you're bored with it, so now you want cheap thrills and, like, plenty of them, and it doesn't matter how tawdry or vacuous they are as long as it's new as long as it's new as long as it flashes and fuckin' bleeps in forty fuckin' different colors. So whatever else you can say about me, I'm not fuckin' bored.

When stuck without a distraction, try thinking a new thought.

Aimless, Monday, 26 May 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

noodle never bored - too busy being angry

jhøshea, Monday, 26 May 2008 17:38 (seventeen years ago)

naked is a class film!

johnny is getting to the heart of the matter: if i've grown used to an environment in which i have a million and one things to distract me, how do i cope without them?

jeremy waters, Monday, 26 May 2008 17:40 (seventeen years ago)

That's the trouble with everybody - you're all so bored.

There are just two kinds of people in the world: bored people and Noodle Vague.

Aimless, Monday, 26 May 2008 17:41 (seventeen years ago)

and my idea of non-boredom could be some sort of quite contemplation or learning, it doesn't have to be anything gimmicky or fast-paced.

my fear is sitting here thinking about not having anything to think about and knowing that i will be entertaining this thought for a long time.

jeremy waters, Monday, 26 May 2008 17:44 (seventeen years ago)

quiet

jeremy waters, Monday, 26 May 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

Go quietly amid the noise and haste...

Aimless, Monday, 26 May 2008 17:46 (seventeen years ago)

Don't ever tell parents you are bored. They will assign you chores.

An important life lesson brought to you by the makers of Abbott.

Abbott, Monday, 26 May 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

oh jeez noodle was just quoting that horrifying movie - now im embarassed

jhøshea, Monday, 26 May 2008 17:52 (seventeen years ago)

Movie quoting works better if nearly everyone under the sun has seen the movie, like E.T. or Casablanca. But Naked?

(see what I did there?)

Aimless, Monday, 26 May 2008 17:58 (seventeen years ago)

Well that depends on how you want your quote to "work". I do more or less agree with Johnny, tho not in the terms he puts it, probably. The one word my children use which is guaranteed to drive me nuts is "boring" when they mean "I don't like this thing".

Noodle Vague, Monday, 26 May 2008 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

i've seen Naked. it was pretty boring,

gabbneb, Monday, 26 May 2008 18:18 (seventeen years ago)

How does it compare to Nekkid?

Aimless, Monday, 26 May 2008 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

boredom is a universal human experience - the urge to avoid encountering ones own unpleasant qualities through entertainment

jhøshea, Monday, 26 May 2008 18:24 (seventeen years ago)

how can you be bored when the internet is full of cat pictures?

"i got on the train to work the other day and realised that i'd forgotten to bring a book or paper and got a horrible sinking feeling. i hate feeling bored to the point where i'll feel almost panicky if i don't have something to occupy my mind."

HELL YES

If it's a commute that you've done a million times, for me its the wasted 40 minutes that annoys.

be bored sometimes why not!

jhøshea, Monday, 26 May 2008 22:20 (seventeen years ago)

or try to meditate.

"Without stimulus or focus, the individual is confronted with nothingness, the meaninglessness of existence, and experiences existential anxiety. Heidegger states this idea nicely: "Profound boredom, drifting here and there in the abysses of our existence like a muffling fog, removes all things and men and oneself along with it into a remarkable indifference. This boredom reveals being as a whole."[13]"

I spend thirty minutes sitting on my ass being bored every morning.

Me too, totally. I hate it when I forget to bring something entertaining to work. Bored out of my skull for 8 hours sux.

libcrypt, Monday, 26 May 2008 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

this is just for the train. i actually have to work at work, unfortunately.

jeremy waters, Monday, 26 May 2008 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

Stomp all over my lol won't you?

libcrypt, Monday, 26 May 2008 23:08 (seventeen years ago)

oh no you didn't, noodle

dell, Monday, 26 May 2008 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

:D

Noodle Vague, Monday, 26 May 2008 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

Weird, I knew Noodle's quote had to be a Thewlis rant even though I didn't ping it as being from "Naked". It was the "as long as it's new as long as it flashes and fuckin' bleeps in forty fuckin' different colors" that did it.

Trayce, Monday, 26 May 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

It's the only bit of Naked I remember with any clarity. I do think of being bored as a kind of character flaw, generally.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 26 May 2008 23:23 (seventeen years ago)

i pretty much agree, i find it v difficult to be bored when there's always too much to do

electricsound, Monday, 26 May 2008 23:26 (seventeen years ago)

I only ever remember the rant about armageddon and 666 and the planets lining up cos the end of the world is nigh.

Trayce, Monday, 26 May 2008 23:26 (seventeen years ago)

I can be bored sometimes, to get back on topic - but it is a boredom with a heavy backpack of guilt on, because I *know* damn well I have no reason to be bored. I always have a lot to do. Call it inertia or something perhaps, but its this paralysis where I sit or wander at home going "ugh I feel really ordinary and I dunno what to do" when I could be cleaning, cooking, playing music, doing the shopping... etc etc.
