I figure we can go multimedia here - movies, videogames, comics, tv - whatever.

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

Some obvious ones:

Pitfall (2600 game)
Tomb Raider (taken as a whole)

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 15:43 (seventeen years ago)

Jeez, I just (kinda) remembered a movie with Cyndi Lauper and Jeff Goldblum that might almost qualify where they play mismatched globetrotting psychics on the trail of some funky treasure. Vibes, I think.

I have spent far too much of my life watching random shit on basic cable.

Treasure of the Four Crowns, which was also in 3-D.

thirdalternative, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

Okay, I've checked IMDB, and I think it must be this:

Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death (1989)
... aka Jungle Heat (USA)
... aka Piranha Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death (USA)

and I think it sounds like you're understating it when you say 'terrible.'

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

Sabre Wulf (Specccy game. Just a guy in the jungle though so maybe pushing it)
Rick Dangerous (Amiga game. Grade A ripoff. Made by the Tomb Raider guys!)

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

From imdb.com (not necessarily for this poll.)

"Punky Brewster" - Punky dresses as Indiana Jones, the lead character from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

"The A-Team" - Murdock wears a fedora and calls himself 'Pasadena' Murdock

Garfield's Feline Fantasies - The arrows hitting the stick, Garfield's "Step where I step" comment, his look as Odie reaches for the banana, the way the banana is displayed and the result as Odie takes the banana from the podium are similar to Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

three from wikipedia, middle one is definitely stretching, haven't seen the others:

# Sydney Fox, a female archaeologist and martial arts expert, protagonist of the television series Relic Hunter.
# Malcolm Reynolds, spaceship captain in television series Firefly and its feature film continuation Serenity (Nathan Fillion tried to copy Harrison Ford's mannerisms)[32].
# Flynn Carsen, librarian and relic protector, played by Noah Wyle in the Librarian series of films.

ledge, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

> # Flynn Carsen, librarian and relic protector, played by Noah Wyle in the Librarian series of films.

I believe the correct expression is 'waht'

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

And yeah - I don't think I'll include brief tributes in other shows or whatever that aren't in and of themselves IJ rips. Like, there's a good one in an early episode of the Simpsons where Homer falls down the stairs after a fleeing Bart ala the rolling boulder scene in the original movie.

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:22 (seventeen years ago)

Murdock ftw

Jordan, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:26 (seventeen years ago)

I always thought Malcolm Reynolds was much more, I dunno, Jack Ryan-ish...

Two Librarian sequels directed by and with Jonathan Frakes!

Does that deserve a ! or have I lost the plot

ledge, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:30 (seventeen years ago)

re: The Librarian

Bob Newhart. Kyle McLaughlin, Jane Curtin and Olympia Dukakis?

the "waht" factor is not decreasing!

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

Sahara, which is on TNT every weekend now, and is like a shot-by-shot remake of an Indy film.

Mordy, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

Oh yeah, haven't seen that. Isn't the one with Aragorn as a mexican cowboy on a cross country race in the Middle East a qualifyer, too? It's another one I skipped.

That was my first thought too, maybe the poll could also include Indy precursors/influences. TMWWBK even has Sean Connery.

How on earth are Serpent and the Rainbow or Jurassic Park Indiana Jones ripoffs?

Tuomas, Thursday, 29 May 2008 06:22 (seventeen years ago)

A scientist guy who makes his living studying really old things the usually digs up somewhere is tasked by some sorta mysterious rich dude to fly to some exotic location and check something out, and then all hell breaks loose and the dude has to use his academic expertise and good ol' grit to save the day. Plus he's grumpy and wears a hat. There's a pretty girl, a dude in leather, a British guy with a gun, some kids, off-road vehicles, jungles, deserts, and scary reptiles. The score was composed by John Williams and Steven Spielberg directed.

Now am I talking about an Indiana Jones movie or Jurassic Park?

Kerm, Thursday, 29 May 2008 06:41 (seventeen years ago)

metroid series

thorn, Thursday, 29 May 2008 07:34 (seventeen years ago)

every shit template hollywood action movie ever

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 29 May 2008 07:46 (seventeen years ago)

Treasure of the Four Crowns (1983) "in 3-D"

A group of adventurers are gathered together to retrieve some mystical gems which are in the possession of a deadly cult.

http://dryden.eastmanhouse.org/media/fourcrowns.jpg

Nate Carson, Thursday, 29 May 2008 08:07 (seventeen years ago)

That was so bad but so cool. There was another one called Metalstorm which was just bad, and not on topic here.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 29 May 2008 08:08 (seventeen years ago)

Okay, maybe the premise of JP and Indiana Jones is kinda similar, but what happens after that is totally different. For example, in IJ the "scary reptiles" are the basis of one or two scenes, whereas in JP they're the whole point of the movie. Based on this any adventure film with a grumpy, academic hero could be called an Indy rip-off.

Tuomas, Thursday, 29 May 2008 08:58 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway, I'd like to nominate Da Vinci Code as an Indy ripoff, I think it's much closer to the IJ movies:
- both feature an academic hero who's specialized in ancient mysteries,
- both take place in exotic locations with a cultural history signifigance,
- both are about the search of legendary objects in religious mythology and, more specifically, the Holy Grail,
- both feature the protagonists unlocking secret codes in order to reveal the mystery,
- in both the protagonists are against members of a powerful organization (Nazis, the Catholic Church) which also has an interest in the mysterical object they are after.

Ste, Thursday, 29 May 2008 10:29 (seventeen years ago)

I tried playing Indy:Fate Of Atlantis on my amiga emu the other day, after the initial disappointment of it being in French I played until I was bored of Indy falling through holes and generally being just a clumsy idiot accidentally discovering the way forward.

Does it get better?

does the da vinci code have hats?

Jordan, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

I dunno from Ladyhawke. Isn't that the one with Ferris Beuller and Fake Zatoichi who turns into a wolf? If it is, I'm thinking prob. not.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

But Hudson Hawk? Mmmmmmaybe.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

Remo Williams?

HI DERE, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

Well, it's definitely got the inexplicible first-name plus common as dirt last name thing going on.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

Ultimately it's following a different adventure archetype, upon reflection.

(actually I just like bringing this movie up why because it look intersting)

HI DERE, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I was thinking it's more James Bond than Indy.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

James Bond + Karate Kid = Remo Williams

HI DERE, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

Sounds about right.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

Indy ripped off the carl barks donald duck comix they based duck tales on!

Hell, Indy pretty much rips from Tintin too.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:42 (seventeen years ago)

And if we're adding in The DaVinci Code, then we might as well add The Name Of The Rose and Brotherhood Of The Wolf

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 29 May 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

guys the davinci code rips it off from a totally different source, get it straight
