I love shoes!
Lotta shoe love on ILX, yes.

Because shoes are like punctuation to the sentence of an outfit.
Because there's not much more decadent than spending on/caring about things you bash into the ground every day.
Because if you can only spend on one or a few thing(s) at a time, take care of your feet and buy the absolute best you can afford. Clothing comes and goes but shoes (god willing and you don't get them wet) remain.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:48 (seventeen years ago)
The great thing about great shoes is that it means you don't have to think about shoes, or buying shoes for years at a time
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 16:50 (seventeen years ago)
i love shoes a lot and wld have so many more pairs of ones i almost never wear if i let myself indulge and/or had the income to indulge omg

However, she REALLY likes kitten heels, and is very critical about outfits.

Shoes, are the distillation of fashion, and of your sensibilities in general.
xp I once bought a pair of Mephistos on eBay for $14 that basically spared my feet years of strain and wear and damage they would have suffered in, say Nikes or New Balance or whatever.
― wanko ergo sum, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)
Ah, I'm not so down on shoes. I walk a lot, often on hot asphalt and I'm glad that they're protecting my feets when I do. But my feets are also sore a lot and since it feels so good to go barefoot once I get home, I guess I tend to devalue shoes.

― Oilyrags, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)
I hauled my summer shoes out on Monday and I have nowhere to put 'em; my shoe collection just doubled and my shelving did not.

― aimurchie, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:33 (seventeen years ago)
Only if you include the pair I forgot to mention (the ones I wore on Monday - wtf?!). I always think of suede as 'apart' 'cause of how vulnerable it is to rain or mud and how it's not really for a proper suit, etc...
― Michael White, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

Er, looking back, I can see why you might ask that question, jhøshea. One pair is a very light brown, capless and with an outdoorsy rubber soul. Another is a light brown captoed shoe, and the third are oxblood/cordovan cap toed oxfords.

2 pairs Asics (Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 style) (back w/gray striping, white w/black striping) 3 pairs Campers (brown for work, black for work, gray/green/yellow sneakers)
I want some new Sambas.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)
This is what I did with my lunch break. I concentrated and envisioned the hallway.
3 pair black oxfords, one more favored than the others but negligible differences 1 pair brown oxfords 1 pair black boots, meticulously shined. These are the go-to shoes right now. 1 pair proper dress shoes, Allen Edmonds, black, tux-worthy. Dusted more often than worn. 1 pair black Chucks 1 pair black and red football cleats 1 pair Tsubo sneaks, all black 1 pair Champion sneaks, black and white 1 pair Ben Sherman suede sneaks, black and orange 1 pair New Balance gym shoes, blue and white, as ordinary as they sound 1 pair Pumas, suede, obnoxiously red 1 pair light brown sneakers with dark brown laces, brand indeterminate 2 pair brown leather sandals, almost identical except one pair is clearly more loved
... and I'm forgetting stuff but I'm starting to get bored.

I find it very difficult to throw away old shoes that need Just One Thing Fixed so about 10 pairs are hanging around in limbo. I have zillions but the black ballet flats and the black patent winklepickers are on show the most right now. Also for the first time in ages I have no 3" heel black Mary Janes. I'm not happy with lots of shoes right now because I loathe peep toes apart from:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3099/2532549488_21a11f2e17.jpg?v=0
A couple of years back I saw those incredibly cumbersome/heavy Mad Max-ish Balenciaga boots on six inch heels or platforms or whatever and I just thought WANT and didn't foresee a problem actually walking in them, the weight would bring tone to the thighs of the needy. Vetoed for being BROWN.

― aimurchie, Thursday, 29 May 2008 00:28 (seventeen years ago)
Shoe down: Two pairs of Merrell slip on all purpose shoes that signify that you are old.
two pairs of kitten heel but comfy shoes - both purchased at yard sales. In fact, let me make it plain that all of my shoes, except the Merrells, are used/ previously worn.
Two pairs of sneakers - one NB and one Nike - purchased from the same woman at the same yard sale, but one year apart.I also bought some crazy Keen shoes from her, which are waterproof? They are like flat Mary Janes with a big toe. She's pregnant. next year, i'll have to bring her a gift! (We do sort of laugh about this yard sale connection.)
One pair of ECCO ballet flats, one pair of chunky heeled black ankle boots with a zipper.
One pair of paisley plastic cowboy boots. The trouble boots - look out when I put them on! One pair of motorcycle galoshes. One pair of Dr. Marten's - ankle length, and I feel REALLY old when I wear them.
and then there's a bunch of shoes that I scorn.
― aimurchie, Thursday, 29 May 2008 00:46 (seventeen years ago)
Before I begin I know I'm going to creep out/arouse/annoy few people but I ADORE shoes, I literally worship them, the way a good pair of obscenely high stilletos patent or simply sequinned the fuck out can hug a foot and shape a figure is stunning. I love the structure, the higher the heel the better then I also really like metallic canvas shoes that are flexible that you can dance in, I love ballet flats that are really shiny and made of jewel tones. My favourite shoe designer (if I had the cash) would be Christian Louboutin because he's a genius and Roger Vivier, Givenchy make stunning shoes too. I like strange lace up ankle boots that look like something from the Victorian era, I can't stand a kitten heel, if you're going to wear heels then don't go half arsed about it. I really like platform shoes, not as in those hideous things the Spice Girls used to wear but like the recent YSL Tribute shoe which is sexy, directional and really beautiful. I'm also a big fan of this trend for nude coloured heels which really offset a 'difficult' looking outfit and elongate the leg as well as being really retro. For me the shoes have nothing to do with a fetish(some might be glad to know), I mean I understand the appeal of a pair of high heels on a woman but I genuinely just adore the shape and the design, I really enjoy a good architectural shoe. Oversharing done. I honestly only have about ten pairs of shoes because when I choose one it has to be RIGHT.

I love shoes because I live in New England and it would suck being barefoot most of the time. I also love shoes as cultural signifiers and objets. I totally denied myself cute shoes when I was in my angry feminist phase. I love that I now can be an angry feminist with cute shoes! But lots of cute shoes don't fit. Ugly stepsister syndrome. I have hobbit feet - broad, flat feet. I have hair on my big toes! i am confessing this to make all of you feel better!
I have lost a lot of shoes, but the shoes i miss the most are my round toe motorcycle boots. I broke my ankle in those boots! They were really comfy.
― aimurchie, Thursday, 29 May 2008 05:21 (seventeen years ago)
Top siders are comfy. But Whoa with the glaring white sole!
― aimurchie, Thursday, 29 May 2008 05:25 (seventeen years ago)

Ooh Suzy, those peep toes look delicious. I like the bat shoes, and I also have a whole totebag of pairs that just need one little thing done, but unfortch if I took them all in at once it'd probably be like $150 of work so they just...sit there under my garment rack. It is very sad.
Am behind the curve on nude shoes, I'm just accepting the existence of nude stockings -- wore them for "classic" dress when I was young, gave them up in college when they seemed retarded, am just coming back around 10 years later.
Also, I'm sorry (no I'm not) but I hate brown shoes for women. Wear gold. Wear red. Wear green or blue. One brown NEVER matches another and you'll be trying to find just the right thing to go with those fuckers for the rest of your shoe-wearing days.
― Laurel, Thursday, 29 May 2008 13:07 (seventeen years ago)
Also red shoes are just inherently better anyway so you might as well.
― Laurel, Thursday, 29 May 2008 13:08 (seventeen years ago)
The one pair of shoes I really want to fix are some Issey Miyake slingback sneakers with very pointy toes. They *are* brown but have mitigating accents of red, black and grey ($30 in sample sale). One of the strapholders has been 'home repaired' so I'm loath to wear them, also aforementioned toes have taken a battering.
Brown shoes: potatoes for your feet. There is also a Britisher saying from back in the day of NO BROWN IN TOWN where they mean clothes and shoes intended for country wear have no place in the big city.
― suzy, Thursday, 29 May 2008 13:18 (seventeen years ago)
Actually I need to know what to do about getting polish for non-standard-color shoes. I think the various cobblers have been using clear on my yellow flats but their pointy little toes really need to be YELLOWED up again, ditto my red D&G pumps, etc. Is that just impossible unless the company is so high-end that you can send yr shoes back for upkeep?
― Laurel, Thursday, 29 May 2008 13:23 (seventeen years ago)
haha i like brown shoes! i am a country peasant! tho the only brown shoes i have are loafers, which i think lend themselves to brown. i also like really dark brown for sandals & high boots, but i do not own them, so i guess that goes to show.
