Okay, I hate the hell out of hats. But I'm going to need one because even reapplying sunscreen every two hours doesn't keep my head from getting sunburned. What casual mens hats can I wear during the summer without looking like a manchild (i.e. no baseball caps)?

A natural-colored Panama (straw) fedora could work. Should be something pretty plain and a little casual for a first hat, probably. Something that makes it look like no matter how battered it gets, you'll wear it exactly the same. And then when it IS really battered, it'll look awesome.

First of all I quite like those Cuban shirts. The rest of it is just unimaginative on your part.

There are also a bunch of cloth hats, made of canvas or waxed cotton, that have the advantage of being washable and are a bit more on the err "rugged" side but unless you are ACTUALLY some kind of outdoorsman I think they look even more aspirational than straw hats. At least the only thing required to wear a straw hat is that it be hot out.

these hats are nice in linen for summer, quite manly as long as they are not huge and clowny, but not washable https://www.millerhats.com/productimages/986.jpg

A lot of hat acceptability comes down to location. In Texas a cowboy hat is always ok.

sombrero notquite= cowboy hat, of course, but you're mostly concerned with hat-as-portable-shade, right? Basically you're trying to avoid a parasol, which is even more risky, fashionwise.
― Oilyrags, Thursday, 29 May 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)
hats are tough - i cant even imagine a summer hat id enjoy wearing
― jhøshea, Thursday, 29 May 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)
I was somewhere with no shade all day Sunday and I'm going to need a summer hat -- no matter how much water I drink or how much sunblock I wear, the beating-down-on-head for hours is just not going to work.
― Laurel, Thursday, 29 May 2008 14:07 (seventeen years ago)
gising hat is pretty amusing!
