They're here now. Three of 'em, hauling my crap down three flights of stairs. $20 apiece and some beer? What do you think?

If you tip $20 apiece you do not need to throw in beer, I don't think. Unless you really like them.

Seriously. $20/mover is an AWESOME tip.
I worked for a moving company one summer that did a lot of military family moves, and they weren't supposed to tip the movers - it was supposedly military policy to not tip. We would frequently get folks who would buy us lunch, beers, though. They ruled.

i agree -- 20 is great

Wow. These responses make me even more furious at the moving company that held our shit hostage until we gave them $50 per person tip.

Remember who you were dealing with, my friend. Strong backs do not necessarily pair with strong morals.

Yeah, that is seriously fucked.
We had movers scheduled to come last week. The day before they were to arrive, they called us up at 3pm and said that they would need $1500 more dollars. Hell to the no! We called another company that gave us a quote and they hooked us up.

Movers be on the shady tip, ladies and germs. Furreals. I went to one co-worker's house the summer I was hefting shit, and it was furnished almost entirely with "abandoned" furniture and appliances.
talk about (o_O)

Yeah, these dudes stole my PS2 on top of the shady tipping business. This is why last time I moved I corralled the family and friends network. But after they saw my boxes of CDs and LPs, I doubt that'll happen next time I need to move.

Oh good, we moved yesterday and tipped $20 ea. and I thought we were being cheap, so yay!
― Finefinemusic, Thursday, 29 May 2008 17:25 (seventeen years ago)
i can't imagine moving without doing research on movingscam.com first. their forums have reviews on pretty much every mover in the country, to help avoid you getting scammed, plus tips on things like packing, tipping, etc.
here's a thread about how much to tip

If I'd have known about that site back then, I certainly would have used it. Guess I never thought to google 'moving' and 'scam' together, oh silly, optimistic little me.

yeah, i don't know how we came across it, but it was useful when we were moving here from london (saved a bundle on marine insurance) and is proving to be almost too helpful on this move-- there's just too many choices!

Man, cities vs. small towns. I tipped the two guys who delivered our new fridge ($10 ea.) and could tell from their reactions that they never get tips. They were all "cool, this is lunch for three days!"
