Traffic Jams, The Worst Of

Today, a 15-20 minute drive took TWO HOURS. And for at least an hour, I was sitting completely still. Not even crawling in first gear. Not even drifting like a glaciar in neutral. STILL. TWO HOURS. ONLY ME IN THE CAR. At least I had "Aaliyah".

Okay, so, here's were you complain about traffic jams. Commentary from passengers welcome, too.

Sounds like you need a resolution Mitch.

Pete: when the CD started for the *second* time, I briefly nurtured a fantasy in which I stick my head out the window and shout "WE NEED A RESOLUTION!"

you need a BICYCLE! ask Mr. Phay!!

katie, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Do I need a bicycle, Mr. Phay? (I can't ride a bicycle. Should I be embarrassed about this?)

Oh my god yes....there's road works on my way to college and a space of 200 yards takes about 30 minutes to go through. I find the urge to shake my fist at people uncontrollable at times.

wow mitch it sounds like you have the worst luck in africa!!

ethan, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

so now I can't complain about anything without contrasting my largely first world troubles with everything bad going on in the rest of the continent, ethan?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and while I'm at it, I may as well add that I've had itchy earlobes for like 3 days now.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You know it's bad when you can turn off the engine for 15 minutes while waiting for the cars in front to move. The worst I've experienced was 75 minutes to do a drive that would take 10 in non- rush-hour time. South Yarra to Clifton Hill. These days I will NOT drive between 5.30 and 7 unless under pain of death.

Mitch, you OBVIOUSLY have been spoiled in the lap of the Great White Oppressor and need to start feeling guilty for your particular circumstances. Start ... NOW! (And, next time, bring multiple CDs. And rations. Be prepared.)

In other news, it once took me 1 hour to drive across Boston on a lonesome Friday night. That was annoying as all get-out. Me getting lost 95 times didn't help.

i stand by my original comment.

ethan, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My ears are still itchy today.

fifteen years pass...

I hate that I'm a person who gets worked up over this, but my once delightful commute to work has become congested and crowded. There's a bridge out (it'll be out for another 13 months) that's making my commute so much more stressful. And even though it's only really adding an extra 5-6 minutes onto my drive I sit in the car fixating on how much shittier my drive is now. I can't stand it when the light changes, but the streets are already so clogged that only one or two cars can go through.

Dropping a vehicular commute - of normally no longer than 25 mins, even- has been a major improvement in my general stress levels

I got stuck in one of those legit apocalyptic gridlock moments the other night with my kids in the car. It was already their bedtimes and we were literally like five minutes from our place, but we didn't move for almost 30 minutes waiting to make a left. It was one of those things where every move anyone made just made it even worse and even more fucked up and gridlocked. I was finally able to get all the way over to the right and make a right turn and go like 15 mins out of my way to get home, because the left I was trying to make was at a highway underpass and there wasn't another place to cross under the highway for some distance.

OTOH they've taken out all the tolls and ezpass booths at the bridge I have to go over for my work commute and it saves me like 10-15 mins each way from the traffic being freed up, so that's nice.
