does anyone else drink this? and where? and how? it is fantastic straight as a bedtime drink

deeznuts, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

i was at an art thing where pernod was the sponsor so that's all they were serving after the beer ran out. they served it with orange juice, which sounds odd, but was kind of tasty.

tehresa, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:03 (seventeen years ago)

I have never tried pernod. I am a baaaaad boozehound.

Oilyrags, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

My dad is a chef and uses it for cooking kind of often. I believe it's in some sauce or something.

ENBB, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

it's great for cooking. for drinking, imo not so much.

lauren, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:08 (seventeen years ago)

RONG

its GREEN, people, & it tastes like licorice. how can you not love that shit

deeznuts, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:08 (seventeen years ago)

i had a sazerac with pernod not long ago, it was good. (real sazeracs use absinthe, but most bars use pernod.)

tipsy mothra, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

I've never tried Pernod either. I too am a baaaad boozehound.

Bimble, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

cmon people this is the worst shit ever

Just got offed, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, i keep meaning to try this sazerac drink.

tehresa, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

but also, pernod: not really something i'd want to drink regularly.

tehresa, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

our college barman once played a prank on me and mixed a cocktail with 50% pernod, didn't matter what else was in there, it was genuinely undrinkable

Just got offed, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:12 (seventeen years ago)

thats the beauty of it! no one drinks this stuff regularly but they should cherish it when they do xp

who is just got offed & can he be banned?

deeznuts, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:13 (seventeen years ago)

I got into Pastis in the South of France where it's ubiquitous, but I think it really is an acquired taste for most Americans. The only way I ever take it is 1 part Pernod or Ricard to 5 parts ice water. It's pretty great when it's hot outside and that's really the only time i ever have it.

Michael White, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:14 (seventeen years ago)

I like pernod but this is my favorite pastis:

http://www.lebonvin.co.uk/images/products/pastisbardouin.jpg

I DIED, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:15 (seventeen years ago)

sweeter and more balanced than pernot/ricard

I DIED, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

Classic when diluted with icy cold water on a hot weekend afternoon at the height of summer.

Not at all classic at any other time.

King Boy Pato, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry guys, bad experiences and all. I'm sure it's lovely when you dilute it adequately but that concoction was simply unacceptable as a form of liquid sustenance, recreation, or even ballast.

Just got offed, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

it would be really good diluted w/ ice water, probably

what im sayin is its a good winter drink, straight. warm, licoricey, beats the shit out of b&b

deeznuts, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:18 (seventeen years ago)

Wait, is this stuff about the same as Ouzo? Ouzo's ok by me.

Oilyrags, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:19 (seventeen years ago)

There are differences between them, but Ouzo, Pernod, Ricard, Absinthe, Herbsaint, Arak, and Sambuca are all anisette liquors.

I DIED, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:21 (seventeen years ago)

Pernod just reminds me of Ivan the Mod at school, producing a bottle from under his Parka, and swigging from it while waiting for the bus home. We were 14. Nasty stuff.

Michael Jones, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:22 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, Henri Bardouin is good, but Pernod is NOT a classy drink. Around the time that they banned absinthe in France, during WWI, I think, Pernod and Ricard made a version without wormwood, with more sugar and less alcohol, and since that's what I first had, it's the flavor that I expect.

Michael White, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

My southern French uncle has a pernod and water at 7 pm every day, and so do I when I visit him. It's good, but it's a geographic-specific thing for me, I only want it when I'm in the south of France.

Zelda Zonk, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:28 (seventeen years ago)

I appreciated Pernod more once I learned the proper way to drink it: once you've drank every drop of alcohol in your house, including the cough syrup, then you sip on the Pernod. While crying.

Abbott, Friday, 30 May 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

It's a great summer drink indeed, with icy water. While playing pétanque, to truly live the dream. I had one in Bamako where they served it with coke ... it was unexpected to say the least and not very good at that. I remember holiday spent camping with friends where we permanently had a bottle of Pernod cooling off in a stream nearby. Good times.

Jibe, Friday, 30 May 2008 20:52 (seventeen years ago)

they served it with orange juice, which sounds odd, but was kind of tasty.

used to drink this ALL THE TIME!!! but it was like, 13 years ago.

chicago kevin, Friday, 30 May 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

wtf is petanque???

abbott you ahole my whole point is pernod is WAY better than cough-syrup flavored B&B and the like

deeznuts, Friday, 30 May 2008 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

You haven't changed my mind!

Abbott, Friday, 30 May 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

petanque is kinda like bocce but with metal balls i think?

elmo argonaut, Friday, 30 May 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

Pétanque is a form of bowls common to the South of France.

Michael White, Friday, 30 May 2008 20:57 (seventeen years ago)

man yr mother mustve never heard of dimetapp or something cuz cough syrup is fucking brutal

xp ermm not helping ill google it 2xp form of bowling?

deeznuts, Friday, 30 May 2008 20:57 (seventeen years ago)

The balls aren't as heavy and in bocce you're rolling them on ahard surface whereas in pétanque you lob them underhanded, mostly, and the ground isn't groomed.

Pernod is THE SHIT, people. Humans baffle me.

Autumn Almanac, Saturday, 31 May 2008 03:56 (seventeen years ago)

pernod and cream sauce with scallops mmmmmmmm

Rubyredd, Saturday, 31 May 2008 03:58 (seventeen years ago)

whaaaa???? explain that one rr

deeznuts, Saturday, 31 May 2008 03:58 (seventeen years ago)

my boss once made panfried scallops in a pernod cream sauce with some other stuff (vodka, maybe?) and it was the most delish thing ever

Rubyredd, Saturday, 31 May 2008 03:59 (seventeen years ago)

ok i have on my desk a lethal cocktail of vodka, pernod (about 2/5 of it is pernod) and various fruit juices, made for me by our callous college barman after i said "go wild - but NO PERNOD".

one sip at a time, almost tolerable

Just got offed, Saturday, 31 May 2008 22:27 (seventeen years ago)

Ricard is superior to Pernod. The Henri Bardouin is a little on the sweet side for me. If you want to get friendly with Pastis, take a trip to Chez Janou in the Marais in Paris they have over 100 varieties.

Best Pastis (Anisado in fact as it was from frame) though was made by a friend's father.

Ed, Saturday, 31 May 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)

frame=spain

?

Ed, Saturday, 31 May 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)

The (pernod) in (our college bar) falls mainly on (my reluctant palate)

Just got offed, Saturday, 31 May 2008 22:42 (seventeen years ago)

HI DERE, Saturday, 31 May 2008 22:49 (seventeen years ago)

an hour later and i'm about halfway through, although in mitigation it is a whole pint

Just got offed, Saturday, 31 May 2008 22:49 (seventeen years ago)

half of it still sits there, emulsified and menacing, my room now infused with an anisate afterstench

i am fearful

Just got offed, Sunday, 1 June 2008 11:47 (seventeen years ago)

I love pastis. But it's no absinthe.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 1 June 2008 11:59 (seventeen years ago)

Ricard is superior to Pernod is kind of challopsy for the sake of it I reckon.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 1 June 2008 12:01 (seventeen years ago)

pastis = summer

baaderonixx, Sunday, 1 June 2008 19:56 (seventeen years ago)

and pretty much the mandatory drink for a drunken afternoon on a terrasse

baaderonixx, Sunday, 1 June 2008 19:57 (seventeen years ago)

i kinda cant believe this is thought of as a summer drink but i guess w/ icewater that makes sense, maybe a lot of sense

it is hard as fuck to get hold of around here

i dont even know how you pronounce it actually can someone tell me? pear-no or per-node or?

deeznuts, Sunday, 1 June 2008 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

pear-no

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 1 June 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

Actually more like purr-no

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 1 June 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

More like fuck no.

Abbott, Sunday, 1 June 2008 22:01 (seventeen years ago)

lol. Pernod is lush you crazy fule. Absinthe is lusher.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 1 June 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

Yes to this thread. I love this stuff, I haven't had in in like a year though which is shocking really. Must go to the off licence soon.

I know, right?, Sunday, 1 June 2008 22:21 (seventeen years ago)

I like this bullshit quite a bit.

wilter, Sunday, 1 June 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

Most ppl I know don't like it though.

wilter, Sunday, 1 June 2008 22:23 (seventeen years ago)

into day 2 now and it's still there just behind my laptop screen, waiting

Just got offed, Sunday, 1 June 2008 23:15 (seventeen years ago)

I love how deeznuts' argument is "but it is green and tastes like licorice whats not to love?!" which are like, the two most off-putting things an alcoholic drink could ever ever have, to my mind.

Pernod, absinthe, ouzo = bleeeuugghh.

Trayce, Monday, 2 June 2008 04:48 (seventeen years ago)

Challopsy my arse. Pernod is the pastis for those who don't like pastis.

Ed, Monday, 2 June 2008 07:00 (seventeen years ago)

The Turks have a version, too: Raki. Which I think is stronger (gave me a nasty hangover anyway).

Zelda Zonk, Monday, 2 June 2008 07:44 (seventeen years ago)

ban deeznuts

jeff, Monday, 2 June 2008 07:47 (seventeen years ago)

The Lebanese are big on Arak ( i think that's how it is spelt/pronounced??). Which must be a similar or the same drink.

xpost

wilter, Monday, 2 June 2008 07:49 (seventeen years ago)

..and I've only ever had home-made stuff :D

wilter, Monday, 2 June 2008 07:50 (seventeen years ago)

As a proud Greek Cypriot I would like to say that ouzo is by a stretch the finest anisate.

Just got offed, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:45 (seventeen years ago)

Seems just about every nation on earth has its own aniseed alcoholic beverage except Britain. Unless I'm missing something.

Zelda Zonk, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:52 (seventeen years ago)

I thought Pernod was just the export name of Pastis Ricard

baaderonixx, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:57 (seventeen years ago)

and yeah, as much as I like the stuff, Ouzo/Raki/Arak (esp the latter) are a league above

baaderonixx, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:57 (seventeen years ago)

Pernod is a different product produced in a different distillery, albeit by the same company (Pernod Ricard SA). I find that the aniseed flavour is stronger in Ricard.

Ed, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:59 (seventeen years ago)

OK aniseed derived booze seems to be a Mediterranean thing:

French = pastis
Arabs = arak
Turks = raki
Greeks = ouzo
Italians = sambuca/galliano
Spanish = anisado

Zelda Zonk, Monday, 2 June 2008 10:00 (seventeen years ago)

Although the one they seem to drink most in the south of France is neither Ricard nor Pernod, it's 51.

Zelda Zonk, Monday, 2 June 2008 10:11 (seventeen years ago)

Indeed, it is slightly cheaper and stronger, a little rougher but good stuff.

Ed, Monday, 2 June 2008 10:13 (seventeen years ago)

Ha, I have a half-full bottle of 51 on my table, begging to be drunk. If there's more of 51 it is indeed because it is cheaper.

Jibe, Monday, 2 June 2008 11:23 (seventeen years ago)

now into day 7 and it's going a nasty shade of dark orange, the aspect of decay has descended over my reverend tipple

The prophecy is fulfilled; it hath turned the hue of urine, poxy silted sediment agglomerates beneath, a gangrenous scum coateth the surface, ancient rites beckon me toward the poison depths, a base potation no more but amber philtre betwixt reason and chaotic frenzy

having a little Ricard with 5 parts water and a couple of ice-cubes, very nice indeed.

drinking «pastis Janot» with a little ice-cold water after the local wine shop had a spirits clearance sale. also eating slices of some German hazelnut salami thing for dinner after I was too lazy to go to the supermarket, feeling v. continental
