The Best Heist Movies of the '90s

Taken from this list. The 90s was a great decade for heist movies. It's going to be hard for me to choose my own favorite. I removed a few I felt didn't belong (cop movies).

Yes! My bbcode was flawless!

rockapads, Friday, 30 May 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

Only one gives you a topless Julie Delpy.

Eazy, Friday, 30 May 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

i voted for Ronin after careful deliberation. second choice is three kings.

rockapads, Saturday, 31 May 2008 22:36 (seventeen years ago)

all amazing:

Ronin (1998)
The Spanish Prisoner (1997)
Three Kings (1999)
True Romance (1993)

jhøshea, Saturday, 31 May 2008 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

I actually have a lot of love for Payback, even though I'm not sure it qualifies as a "heist" movie. I've been thinking about doing a revenge movie poll if there hasn't been one yet. Payback would be high on my list for those. I pretty much hate real-life Mel Gibson, but Payback to me is a work of art and probably my 2nd favorite movie with him in it (after Lethal Weapon). It's a hilarious movie packed with an all-star cast of some of my favorite character actors, and with a ton of great lines/scenes. I also really love the dirty 70s Charlie Bronson feel to the cinematography and set design.

rockapads, Sunday, 1 June 2008 09:47 (seventeen years ago)

Just to remind everybody, Heat is some straight fucking bullshit. Some 3 hour long straight fucking bullshit.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 1 June 2008 12:15 (seventeen years ago)

SNEAKERS

and bottle rocket

and you cannot be serious nv

deeznuts, Sunday, 1 June 2008 12:16 (seventeen years ago)

I like M Mann, and I still think Heat is top 10 worstest movies of all time. I can dig slow films if nothing happens at all, or they're epic, or the plot is fiendish in its intricacy, but this is just a 90 minute straight to video cops and robbers flick shot at half speed.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 1 June 2008 12:19 (seventeen years ago)

damn i dont even know where to start w/ that, the heist scene alone is like 30 minutes of sheer adrenaline. one of the most incredible climaxes/action sequences ive ever scene

honestly had no idea anyone even could be much less was bored w/ that movie

deeznuts, Sunday, 1 June 2008 12:24 (seventeen years ago)

Heat would have benefited from some serious editing. I like films with quiet reprieves that allow me to soak in the atmosphere, but the movie just feels overindulgent at times. I could have done without the Pacino/De Niro diner scene, and the stuff with Pacino and his wife really bog down the pacing. I own the movie, but rarely watch it because of the length.

rockapads, Sunday, 1 June 2008 17:38 (seventeen years ago)

When Pacino's missus did that "closure" line, I nearly left the cinema. But I was laughing too hard.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 1 June 2008 17:41 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Anyone who didn't vote Full Contact is an idiot.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 23:09 (seventeen years ago)

Casino is a heist movie???

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 5 June 2008 01:34 (seventeen years ago)

gotta be ronin.

s1ocki, Thursday, 5 June 2008 05:49 (seventeen years ago)

out of sight

(most underrated movie on the list is probably miami blues.)

tipsy mothra, Thursday, 5 June 2008 06:29 (seventeen years ago)

three kings

Tape Store, Thursday, 5 June 2008 06:36 (seventeen years ago)

I'm probably with Tipsy, but I love every indulgent moment of Casino as well. More importantly, Lee Marvin's ghost will torment to death anyone who votes for Payback.

Cosmo Vitelli, Thursday, 5 June 2008 07:20 (seventeen years ago)

Killing Zoe sucks. Would it have been made without Lawrence Bender's association with Tarantino?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Thursday, 5 June 2008 08:53 (seventeen years ago)

I know how these polls go, and I don't like that Heat is not going to get as many votes as it deserves just because of a couple muscle-bound hatey posts from one dude. (Guess what I voted for.)

kenan, Thursday, 5 June 2008 08:58 (seventeen years ago)

out of sight is great too.

s1ocki, Thursday, 5 June 2008 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, ronin 1, out of site 2, etc
totally forgot that heat was 3 hrs long!

rrrobyn, Thursday, 5 June 2008 15:41 (seventeen years ago)

ronin, heat then payback. big hit for yucks.

darraghmac, Thursday, 5 June 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

My god, there is so much garbage on that list.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 5 June 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

Three Kings and Out of Sight stand out on that list, and fuck "heist movies."

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 5 June 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

harrumph!

s1ocki, Thursday, 5 June 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

I mean the ones that are endlessly remaking the ones from the '50s, obv.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 5 June 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

You people are either a) all crazy or b) haven't seem Full Contact. Most of the rest of these movies are garbage anyway.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

Three Kings, blech. Old Robert DeNiro movies. Double blech.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

Weak sauce remakes of Point Blank.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

Also if you haven't seen Full Contact the Grifters >>>>>>> anything else on this list.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

full contact sounds like a softcore thriller.

s1ocki, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

And Heat doesn't?

Alex in SF, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

I mean the ones that are endlessly remaking the ones from the '50s, obv.

how many times am i going to have to post "no one gives a shit" until you get it?

n/a, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

Heat basically is a softcore thriller minus DeNiro/Pacino shower scene actually.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

the director's cut of payback that came out on dvd recently >>> the theatrical version.

(yes morbs, point blank is good too)

xxxxp

Jordan, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

"totally forgot that heat was 3 hrs long!"

This seems impossible.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

i'll probably vote Ronin, but no love for Jackie Brown (although i don't remember it being very heisty)?

Jordan, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

lol Sneakers. i don't think i've seen it since the theater!

Jordan, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

LOL at people complaining about "Old Robert DeNiro movies" ... as opposed to what, the really awesome new Robert DeNiro movies?

n/a, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

i like a whole bunch of movies on this list. probably because i like "heist movies" and "the '90s".

Jordan, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

Three Kings, though I'm sure it strictly fits in the Heist Movie category.

chap, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:23 (seventeen years ago)

OK n/a, yer right, unimaginative recycling is the sacramental wine of American culture. THE END

Everything after Once Upon a Time in America is a "new Robert De Niro movie."

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:24 (seventeen years ago)

there have been crotchety douchebag film snobs on the internet before you, does that make you obsolete?

n/a, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

impulse vote for sneakers

n/a, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

I mean Robert DeNiro being OLD in them.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

I'm shocked people actually liked Three Kings.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

shocked!

n/a, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

The last hour and a half of that movie is terrible. Actually the first hour is pretty lame too!

Alex in SF, Thursday, 5 June 2008 16:33 (seventeen years ago)

I LIKE THIS

I DON'T LIKE THIS

YAY

n/a, Thursday, 5 June 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)

n/a is fucking on fire. i like it

Mr. Que, Thursday, 5 June 2008 17:03 (seventeen years ago)

these are pretty bad:

The Big Hit (1998)
Blue Streak (1999)
Dead Presidents (1995)
Entrapment (1999)
Gonin aka The Five (1995)
Hudson Hawk (1991)
Killing Zoe (1994)
Payback (1999)
Underneath (1995)
The Usual Suspects (1995)

omar little, Thursday, 5 June 2008 17:03 (seventeen years ago)

is blood and wine terrible? i don't even remember hearing about it.

Jordan, Thursday, 5 June 2008 17:03 (seventeen years ago)

alex your judgment of '90s heist movies is breaking my heart.

s1ocki, Thursday, 5 June 2008 17:07 (seventeen years ago)

No, Blood and Wine is good. it has Stephen Dorff in it!

admrl, Thursday, 5 June 2008 17:07 (seventeen years ago)

"hey thanks for your useful contribution to our discussion message board"

What the hell kind of discourse were you expecting on a discussion message board?

Alex in SF, Thursday, 5 June 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

omg Killing Zoe, in which Roger Avary drags Julie Delpy down to his hell.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 5 June 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

"alex your judgment of '90s heist movies is breaking my heart."

The lack of love for Full Contact is breaking mine.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 5 June 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

Nah just kidding I really don't care. FTR Ronin's pretty decent. It's just far from the best movie on this list.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 5 June 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71JS15F2FXL._SL500_AA280_.gif

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 5 June 2008 17:33 (seventeen years ago)

What about A Simple Plan? Does that have a heist in it?

It wasn't on the list I took this from. I thought about adding it, but decided it doesn't really qualify since the film didn't really center around the heist that drove the plot. Great movie, though.

I removed the Die Hard movies from the list, and probably should have removed Casino, too.

rockapads, Thursday, 5 June 2008 20:33 (seventeen years ago)

Killing Zoe had a great soundtrack, Jean-Hugues Anglade over-acting, Julie Delpy topless, and looked great. Am I the only one on this thread who will admit to liking it? I guess I like it in the same way that if I do a 2000s heist poll, I'd be tempted to vote for Way of the Gun.

rockapads, Thursday, 5 June 2008 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

At least Way of the Gun has James Caan in a good performance.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 5 June 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)

Jackie Brown for the motherfuckin' win

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 5 June 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

'00s heist movie poll, pls

Jordan, Thursday, 5 June 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

(i would probably vote for "heist")

rockapads, Thursday, 5 June 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

'00s heist poll coming in 2010! (w/ hopes that a lot more great heist movies are released between now and then)

rockapads, Thursday, 5 June 2008 20:52 (seventeen years ago)

nooooooo

Jordan, Thursday, 5 June 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

ilx interest in heist movies of the '00s is at an all-time high, the time is now.

Jordan, Thursday, 5 June 2008 20:57 (seventeen years ago)

The Spanish Prisoner is my pick. It almost feels like a made for TV movie (no violence, no language, no sex) but really good.

daavid, Thursday, 5 June 2008 21:54 (seventeen years ago)

Killing Zoe had a great soundtrack, Jean-Hugues Anglade over-acting, Julie Delpy topless, and looked great. Am I the only one on this thread who will admit to liking it?

I liked it for the same reasons. Enjoyed it more than other fake-Tarantino movies like Albino Alligator and Very Bad Things.

Eazy, Thursday, 5 June 2008 22:02 (seventeen years ago)

love and a .45!!

gff, Thursday, 5 June 2008 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

is really bad!!

gff, Thursday, 5 June 2008 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

xxp That's not much of a stretch.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 5 June 2008 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

killing zoe is bad but eric stoltz seems like a bro.

Jordan, Thursday, 5 June 2008 22:06 (seventeen years ago)

he wasted no time going from real tarantino to fake tarantino.

Jordan, Thursday, 5 June 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)

More that he just stuck w/ Avery.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 5 June 2008 22:13 (seventeen years ago)

biggest reason I like Killing Zoe is the whole friends growing apart thing. one asshole grew up; one got worse. at first Anglade seems like a fun dude to hang out with, too. Stoltz did a great job just seeming like kind of a chill going-with-the-flow sort of guy until his funny and crazy friend gets him into trouble. who can't relate to that? strip away all the stylistic 90s crime movie cliché stuff and it's basically a movie about a friendship not surviving time and age.

rockapads, Thursday, 5 June 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 5 June 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Now I can officially complain that y'all suck.

omar little, Thursday, 5 June 2008 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

The Usual Suspects (1995) 3

people still rep for this?

omar little, Thursday, 5 June 2008 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

OLD de niro!

Alex in SF, Thursday, 5 June 2008 23:13 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't see The General on the list until now! Great movie: top-form Brendan Gleeson and Jon Voight.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 5 June 2008 23:15 (seventeen years ago)

Wow, I really thought Ronin would take this. Nice to see a vote for Quick Change, too.

rockapads, Thursday, 5 June 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

The General is def. best movie that didn't get a vote.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 5 June 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

ha, i didn't even register that quick change was on here, weird movie

n/a, Friday, 6 June 2008 12:19 (seventeen years ago)

The 90s was a great decade for heist movies

lol

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 15:20 (seventeen years ago)

v pleased w/ the results but i wouldve liked to see bottle rocket get at least one vote

deeznuts, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 15:22 (seventeen years ago)

six years pass...

Working from home sick today and "Sneakers" is the perfect movie to watch.

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 18 July 2014 14:27 (eleven years ago)

Not a great movie but really fun and the cast is insane. I like how Dan Aykroyd has more of a '90s alternarock haircut than River Phoenix. Also its crazy how much more Whistler saves everyone else's asses than anyone else on the team.

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 18 July 2014 16:52 (eleven years ago)

Ben Kingsley's ponytail and weird indeterminate accent.

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 18 July 2014 16:54 (eleven years ago)

Also ends with the team figuring out the NSA wants the magic box to spy on Americans?
