Big Brother 2008 (UK) Thread 1: Low Life?

Well, yeah it's Big Brother nine in three days time, and there's been a bit of the usual 'secret sex room' news stories in the daily star, but IS THAT IT? No great anticipation? No interest?

It's not that you can blame them. And yet... the potential for getting interesting but normal people was tested on e4 with the 'celeb' takeover version earlier this year.

But how interested are the public at large, who are loathe to explore too far away from the main channels, unless there's actual fighting, titilation and/or morans.

Of course, the prize will go to the nicest or most interesting person/ality, but increasingly it's not about the winner but the journey taken. (Alison, from some years ago, being one of the few that actually managed to continue with a career in client-facing media despite being the first voted off on her year)...

So, the question remains: Lowlife?

Mark G, Monday, 2 June 2008 16:29 (sixteen years ago)

Without Dermot, I don't see the point. Dude anchored the whole experience.

Gukbe, Monday, 2 June 2008 16:54 (sixteen years ago)

Alison wasn't first off.

ailsa, Monday, 2 June 2008 19:33 (sixteen years ago)

"interesting but normal people"

I think the difference was that the housemates earlier this year were people who had a lot to lose by acting like twunts. Normal BB is people who have no talent and have to resort to twuntishness to get a tiny amount of fame. Really, WTF has Brian done since the end of the last series? Rhetorical question, I don't actually care.

Many of the walls are padded

That'll be useful, for when they start bouncing off them...

snoball, Monday, 2 June 2008 19:59 (sixteen years ago)

I might not bother watching this one.

Chanelle's single - "I Want It", Charley's single - "I Want It More"

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/a97394/bb-charley-i-might-be-the-new-mariah.html

limón, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:13 (sixteen years ago)

an "R&B hip-hop" single (...) which would have a "funky house electro" remix.

Covering all the bases there...

"Who knows, next year I might be Mariah Carey with a bit of luck."

If by that she means "a cokehead with no grasp of reality, a very short fuse temper and blatantly fake breasts who looks like a drag queen", then she's probably already there.

snoball, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:21 (sixteen years ago)

Why is it that ALL the girls on UK BB are sluts?

King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:22 (sixteen years ago)

(Please, no obvious answers.)

King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:22 (sixteen years ago)

to an obvious question?

darraghmac, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:27 (sixteen years ago)

If possible!

King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:29 (sixteen years ago)

I think that most of the BB contestants - both boys and girls - are subconsciously going for that Loaded/Maxim/GQ/etc. "lads" vote, based on a (mis)perception that most of the BB audience are a bit thick. Real lowest common denominator stuff. It's got worse in the last few years, "lad's lad" Anthony winning in 2005 being the tipping point that informed the strategies of future contestants from that point on. Actually I don't think that either Pete or Brian fell naturally into that "lads" category, but it was something they both played up to.

snoball, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:33 (sixteen years ago)

Is Anthony always in the lads mags? I don't know...

I would guess that a large amount of the auditionees for BB are the 'fame! followed by TV presenting work plz!" wannabeez of which the producers could either wheedle them out or pick a representative.

It does seem to be a ticket to Heat magazines "star spot" page for ever, well beyond the 'can't remember them now' stage.

Mark G, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:53 (sixteen years ago)

Anthony is more the kind of bloke lads would have a drink with in a pub while reading a lad's mag which had pictures of Chanelle/Charley/whoever in it.
In last year's "Big Brother's Big Brain", one of the psychologists was explaining that they actually made a point of telling the wannabees that BB wasn't a ticket to fame and fortune, but the wannabees eyes would just glaze over and they'd hear whatever they wanted to hear.

snoball, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:59 (sixteen years ago)

Nadia's cash-in single wasn't all that bad, if I remember, but it didn't exactly do their ongoing fame any favours.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 22:20 (sixteen years ago)

i didn't watch it last year after racistgate and didn't miss it.

definitely not watching it this year.

Brohan Hari, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 22:24 (sixteen years ago)

One housemate has had a breast enlargement, apparently.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 5 June 2008 05:50 (sixteen years ago)

Like the Australian one is any different.

Only THREE of them will probably end up in Zoo Magazine this year!!

King Boy Pato, Thursday, 5 June 2008 05:57 (sixteen years ago)

It's still going??

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 5 June 2008 06:26 (sixteen years ago)

The Daily Star has it there's a blind man, a 44 yr old, a mother who will 'miss her kids', um someone with a boob job, and some people.

Mark G, Thursday, 5 June 2008 08:16 (sixteen years ago)

Blind dude ftw.

Matt DC, Thursday, 5 June 2008 08:34 (sixteen years ago)

What does The Independent say?

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 5 June 2008 08:51 (sixteen years ago)

that Bush is taking over Iraq and imposing immunity for US contractors

Mark G, Thursday, 5 June 2008 08:52 (sixteen years ago)

Brilliant.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 5 June 2008 08:53 (sixteen years ago)

O FFS Please give it a rest. Who in the UK hasn't been in the Big Brother house already?

JTS, Thursday, 5 June 2008 13:51 (sixteen years ago)

If anyone is planning to watch the 'direct' feed later on tonight, you'd do well to watch the episode of King Of The Hill on just before it - it's a great episode, where Hank forgets to mail the house insurance.

Ste, Thursday, 5 June 2008 14:51 (sixteen years ago)

MTV's 'exclusive':

Big Brother 9 starts tonight and MTV can exclusively reveal some clues to the contestants identities...

One Housemate does stand-up comedy
One Housemate has been deported from America
One Housemate is a DJ
One Housemate is a Buddhist
One Housemate is Muslim
One Housemate wears a watch worth £13,000
Three Housemates have children
Three Housemates were born outside the UK
One Housemate has appeared in a film with Hugh Grant
One Housemate has had a breast enlargement
One Housemate has never watched Big Brother
The eldest Housemate is 42.

Mark G, Thursday, 5 June 2008 15:48 (sixteen years ago)

So, basically, one housemate is a stand-up mother of three who has kids, is a buddhist who got deported from america as she had a cat stevens cassette, has an expensive watch, knows HGrant, and is too busy DJing to watch Big Brother.

Jenny Eclair, come on down!

snoball, Thursday, 5 June 2008 20:31 (sixteen years ago)

Crappy task with potential for big lulz. The fat-faced Joey out of Friends dude is well into role-playing, maybe cos him and his Mrs give off major swingers vibes.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 5 June 2008 20:33 (sixteen years ago)

i'm currently watching Heroes instead.
i'm sure i'll pick up the pieces later on.

Any road up, more on the controversial Kat nominations and her frowning at Rebecca's nominations...

Darnell and Kathreya argued over Rachel's nomination of Rex in the early hours of this morning.

As Darnell washed up, he asked an upset-looking Kathreya what was wrong.

"I feel lost," she replied, starting to cry. "I really feel disappointed, sick, tired. I'm not very happy. I just want to go home now. Why you still doubt me? Why Rex and Mo still doubt me?"

Darnell explained that no-one doubted her, but pointed out that she was very "intelligent". He observed that although she could play jokes on them, they couldn't do the same to her.

He then warned that Rachel apologising to Kathreya for nominating Rex yesterday looked bad. She argued that she didn't mind, but he replied: "I've seen the look on your face."

She said that she had been "surprised", to which Darnell said: "He ain't necessarily the nicest person to her. That's the person she feels doesn't treat her the way she should be treated. I thought it was bad she had to say that, honestly."

Kathreya began crying again and sobbed: "I'm sad I talked to you. You didn't help me and I didn't want to talk about that. I don't find it my fault at all. I never influenced Rachel, ever."

As she retreated to the bathroom, Darnell sighed: "That's fine. Can't talk to her. All it's going to do is make you look like a dickhead like I just did. It's not fair on us regular people who don't know how to say the right things."

.. which I'm trying to make head or tail of..

Mark G, Friday, 29 August 2008 08:38 (sixteen years ago)

right, I got there.

Kat is trying to stay in with the boys, (Rex and Mo), Darnell called her on it, and she's gone back into character..

Mark G, Friday, 29 August 2008 08:40 (sixteen years ago)

found the 'script'...

Mikey told Rex in no uncertain terms what he thought of him this afternoon, branding him a bully - leaving Rex with no comeback.

"You were blaming Sara if Darnell goes," Mikey accused Rex, referring to Rex winding up Sara earlier today and making her feel guilty for Darnell's rumoured exit. "You kept on going on in your usual way grinding her down, harping on about it."

Rex was furious: "You don't want anyone to like me, because you're a jealous little man," he retorted. "You can't take the fact that people like me. That makes you a very pathetic man and I feel sorry for you, honestly. You should think about the things you say."

But Michael shot back: "You don't realise you're a control freak and bullying everybody," he told the chef, who promptly left the room.

"Rex will never accept any responsibility," Mikey fumed to Lisa, who agreed with him. "Classic bully," he went on.

Rex stormed back in: "I'd prefer it if you didn't talk to me or mention my name, if that's how you're going on," he railed. "It's pathetic!"

Mark G, Friday, 29 August 2008 09:17 (sixteen years ago)

Mikey FTW now I guess.

I was disappointed in Mo's eating abilities last night. I reckon I could have done it, it's not like there was a time limit.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 29 August 2008 09:20 (sixteen years ago)

http://vote.sparklit.com/poll.spark/1083383

still much the same...

Mark G, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:13 (sixteen years ago)

OMG the levels of irony involved! Is Rex the most delusional un-self-aware contestant ever?

Colonel Poo, Friday, 29 August 2008 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

yes

jed_, Friday, 29 August 2008 20:40 (sixteen years ago)

Kat's gone way down in my estimation the last few days for sticking up for Rex.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 29 August 2008 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

i was just thinking exactly the same.

jed_, Friday, 29 August 2008 20:46 (sixteen years ago)

Rex: "In here I've lost my delicate touch with people"
Oh FFS, Rex spends so much time trying to justify his wanker behaviour...

snoball, Friday, 29 August 2008 20:52 (sixteen years ago)

Almost as much time as Darnell spends telling everyone how sorry they should feel for him...

snoball, Friday, 29 August 2008 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

Does Darnell listen to other people? I've heard him talk about his own weaknesses nonstop for three months but never seen him listen to another person.

I can't stand Kat or Rachel, but at least they both genuinely show an interest in other people.

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 29 August 2008 21:01 (sixteen years ago)

We're so sick to death of Darnell talking about himself ALL THE TIME that we skip all his bits completely now.

Autumn Almanac, Saturday, 30 August 2008 07:39 (sixteen years ago)

Mark G, Monday, 1 September 2008 07:33 (sixteen years ago)

Sara could win, if the crowd's reaction on Friday night was anything to go by.

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 1 September 2008 08:08 (sixteen years ago)

My prefs, in order:

Mikey
Sara
Mo
A giant meteor destroys the earth
Rachel
Kathreya
I am buggered with a red hot poker
Darnell

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 1 September 2008 08:11 (sixteen years ago)

Sara's been all over Darnell all weekend, so she may be out of the running again.

I see Rex isn't on your list.

Mark G, Monday, 1 September 2008 08:13 (sixteen years ago)

Rex hasn't a chance, so no point speculating.

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 1 September 2008 08:16 (sixteen years ago)

Outrageous guess time: He will come third.

Mark G, Monday, 1 September 2008 08:30 (sixteen years ago)

http://vote.sparklit.com/poll.spark/1083528

Not quite the "who will win" poll, not quite.

Mark G, Monday, 1 September 2008 08:53 (sixteen years ago)

Sara 22/1

Hmm, Sara might be at a bargain price there.

She's now 4/1 or thereabouts...

Mark G, Monday, 1 September 2008 14:15 (sixteen years ago)

Rex hasn't a chance, so no point speculating.

he has hugely more chance of winning than Darnell or Mo. i will eat my own shoes if Mo isn't first out. i can't imagine any more than 2-3% of people voting for him. i agree with Mark, he will come third. i now think rachel will win, alas. not that i dislike the girl i just think she's dull and weak.

jed_, Monday, 1 September 2008 14:56 (sixteen years ago)

"i agree with Mark, he will come third."

talking about Rex obv.

jed_, Monday, 1 September 2008 14:57 (sixteen years ago)

i now think rachel will win

If that's the case she'll win 1p for every time she's said OH MY GOSHHHHHHHH in there.

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 1 September 2008 21:06 (sixteen years ago)

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 19:31 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah I'm thinking Mo, not sure about the other one.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 19:43 (sixteen years ago)

Sara is quite high up on the rankings.

Mo, and Kat most likely.

Mark G, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 19:47 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe Mo and Darnell.

even rex dropped his mr. cool cool act and was genuinely amazed and confused.

i missed the mo announcement and someone was on the phone during his interview but i dare say i didn't miss much.

no way did i think kat would be second out.

jed_, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 22:42 (sixteen years ago)

the best bit about the second announcement was that as soon as they heard the studio sound come over the PA in the house kat said "oh no, big brotha... please don't take any more of my frien' away" lol!

jed_, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 23:24 (sixteen years ago)
