water heater safety question

It's midnight and I don't want to wake a plumber, but I'm a little worried and probably won't be able to sleep. We have a gas-fired Weil McCain hot water heater. I just googled it and it seems that some models were recently recalled. The heater usually kicks on and off periodically, and you can hear the loud vent outside. Tonight it seems to be going on and off non-stop. It's new - we just had the house built in October. There's corrosion at one of the pipe connectors. It seems that there's a draft coming from where the vent connects to the unit. Should I be concerned? We have CO detectors in the house. The noise of it is driving me batty?

I doubt any plumbers or gas people are up on ILX, but who knows? Maybe.

I know it's driving me batty. That wasn't a question.

It is a good thing you can hear the vent outside, means it's venting outside, at least mostly. Is the draft sucking or blowing? Not sure about the us but here in the uk a lot of boiler flues are of a type where there are two concentric pipes, the outer draws air in and the inner vents waste gasses out. So it may just be the inlet air leaking.

If you're not in bed already, turn it off before you go and get the gas man round in the morning. Corosion doesn't sound good wherever its coming from.
