i have to wear my glasses while riding my bike, which is fine and sometimes great if like riding through a zone with dust or many flying insects that could otherwise go in eyes, but holy crap how awful is it to ride at night while it's raining! for this alone i wld get contacts. but i feel like that wld be giving in to the fact that my vision isn't super great and that contacts wld make it great all the time!

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

why was that car there where there's a race?

ken c, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 16:19 (sixteen years ago)

The 28-year-old driver was apparently drunk and fell asleep

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

Better that he was asleep than maliciously driving into a pack of cyclists; I'd rather think of him as stupid and lacking judgement rather than psychotic.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 16:51 (sixteen years ago)

sorry mark, was meant to be a response to ferg but didn't really come out that way :-(

Just got offed, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 16:56 (sixteen years ago)

but how do you accidentally drunkenly fall asleep and end up where a bike race is going on? i thought these places are normally like, sealed off from traffic

ken c, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

somebody needs to zoom in on the hands raised guy on the right and do a YTMND with Dragostea Din Tei

MPx4A, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 21:57 (sixteen years ago)

that will make amazingly little sense to future generations

MPx4A, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 21:58 (sixteen years ago)

it doesn't make any sense now

gff, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 22:00 (sixteen years ago)

Which one of them died?

wilter, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 22:01 (sixteen years ago)

Probably only one lane was closed for the race.

wilter, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

Why did they put it next to the drunk driving lane, though?

Michael White, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 22:03 (sixteen years ago)

that one dude who is riding out of the pack is lucky as fuck

omar little, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 23:37 (sixteen years ago)

DG, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

i would assume that ipods are pretty susceptable to injury in a mexican car crash.

jeff, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 23:57 (sixteen years ago)

the flash based ones are pretty much indestructible

DG, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 23:58 (sixteen years ago)

look for this pic to be posted on craigslist rants and raves on critical mass fridays.

rockapads, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 00:00 (sixteen years ago)

Better that he was asleep than maliciously driving into a pack of cyclists;

...like the asshole in sydney a few weeks ago who got pissed at a posse of training cyclists on the road who weren't taking up even a whole lane, so he overtook the pack, pulled back in, and then slammed on his fucking brakes so they all ran up his arse and went all over his car.

Amazingly no one was killed, but ... wtf, humanity.

Trayce, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 00:13 (sixteen years ago)

Has that fuck been charged I wonder?

wilter, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 00:17 (sixteen years ago)

saw a woman get hit by a cyclist last week. she had been crossing when she shouldn't and clearly not paying attention so i had very little sympathy.

i side with cyclists on this one. of course a fair few of us are reckless but the ratio of griping to collisions is completely unreasonable. cyclists are injured far more than they injure.

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:05 (sixteen years ago)

DG, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 13:22 (sixteen years ago)

peds are at greater risk from cyclists than they are from automobiles, no question. but the risks posed by vehicular traffic to even the most conscientious cyclist are far higher.

so yeah, i've been butthurt all over this thread, but it's simply because i have actually been hit by a car before, have countless friends who have been hit, and live in neighborhood that has seen three fatalities in less than a year. so yeah, it's not joking about OW pic that really irks me, it's that joking about it is justifiable because, you know, bikers DESERVE it on account of being irritating.

gbx, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:02 (sixteen years ago)

well you certainly dispelled that notion

DG, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:04 (sixteen years ago)

haha, fair play

gbx, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:06 (sixteen years ago)

wait, this thread is moving too fast and I'm confused, so is it or is it not trendy to point and laugh at injured cyclists?

Ste, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:20 (sixteen years ago)

You never hear tractor or horse & buggy riders getting all indignant about how they're treated on the road. People are such terrible drivers it kinda amazes me that there aren't more random collisions... SCRRRRREEEEEEE "oops, guardrail, carry on."

Kerm, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:21 (sixteen years ago)

i got my foot run over by a car that failed to indicate it was turning a corner.

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:23 (sixteen years ago)

i just try to hate drivers, cyclists and pedestrians all equally!

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 14:26 (sixteen years ago)

i almost got to laugh at a pedestrian at state and lake this morning. fucking moron walked right into traffic while talking on his phone.

no-signal moves ("right hooks") comprise like 80% of my traffic beefs.

also, remember ppl, ALWAYS pass buses on the left, no matter what.

gbx, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 22:07 (sixteen years ago)

i haven't ridden a bike in more than 13yrs and in about a months' time i'm going to become a regular rider. this thread is making me feel petrified about that.

word
tho ugh there is a bike route here that is a drawn-on path on major one-way street and the bus stops every two blocks, pulling across the bike lane of course. thankfully this means one can get in front of it, but it's still a bit of a battle. i've pretty much switched to a dif route tho.

unless you drive on the left.

i don't know how it is in other cities, but I rage at cyclists on a regular basis in SF. my biggest complaint is how so many of them here are these militant anti-car people, yet often tear down residential sidewalks at 30mph and act like the pedestrians are the annoyance. it's like, slap any kind of political bullshit on it that you want - you're a road hog.

most of the time i am a pedestrian, but my gf drives and often gets super stressed when a cyclist is doing something rude/stupid such as riding through stop signs and red lights, and wobbling around in a car lane on the phone.

rockapads, Friday, 6 June 2008 02:30 (sixteen years ago)

My biggest complaint about car drivers is they have an annoying tendency to kill cyclists, pedestrians, and other car drivers, no matter how polite and intelligent they are.

"I know there are always a lot of questions and speculation when a cyclist is killed so let me just say that Clint was a close friend and will be dearly, dearly missed. We worked together in a very bike-friendly office downtown and he rode and talked about riding everyday. He was a talented designer and passionate cyclist who was learning to stitch his own messenger bags and just loved to ride. Clint rode fixed, always ran a break and always wore his helmet. I don't know why this happened but make no mistake this was not just someone who happened to be on a bike (though equally tragic), this was a member of our community who loved to ride. I'll always remember our late night track stand contests in the office and there just isn't enough room here to talk about how good of a guy he w

why did i ever read the comments on that article, paging tombot, someone nuke humanity

gbx, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 03:43 (sixteen years ago)

fuccccck :( x10239

The Chicago City Council passed legislation in March that makes it illegal to open a vehicle's door in a biker's path.
GOOD. as far as i know this is not the case here. it's up to the biker to determine whether it's safe to pass all parked cars - even if those cars have tinted windows or are flung open quickly and without a sound or any kind of warning. being doored in heavy, fast traffic is seriously one of my biggest fears when biking (i've been doored while going slowly on a side street and even that sucked total ass)

pretty sure i can guess what those comments say but i will not read the comments as it will send me into downward disgust with humanity spiral of pain that i just can't deal with today :/

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 14:50 (sixteen years ago)

nothing to do with that article but I'm fed up with cyclists flouting the traffic laws, I rarely see any that don't. One guy even had to slam onto his brakes the other day as I walked in front of him on a crossing, THE LIGHT IS ON RED JACKASS! And don't get me started on the numerous idiots flying down the towpath whilst I'm fishing on the canal THERES CLEAR SIGNS FOR 'NO CYCLING' YOU PRICKS.

Ste, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 15:07 (sixteen years ago)

^^^ real talk

regular occurrence: idiots crossing the street when automobile traffic is stopped and gridlocked, talking on their phones, NOT looking when they step into the clearly marked bike lane.

in the Loop, peds flout traffic laws just as frequently as cyclists. i was coming down wells one afternoon, 18mph, green light, and all of a sudden a bunch of pedestrians (like, 30) flooded into the street because there were no cars. this happened like 50 feet in front of me.

i was very, very rude to them.

gbx, Thursday, 12 June 2008 01:06 (sixteen years ago)

Pedestrians and cyclists ignoring the laws is just part of living in any real city, I figure.

libcrypt, Thursday, 12 June 2008 02:15 (sixteen years ago)

using a phone while moving is just plain idiotic no matter if you're supposed to be controlling a bike, car, or just your own fucking feet. pedestrians on the phone are a fucking hazard to other pedestrians.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 12 June 2008 02:24 (sixteen years ago)

they should have painted rectangles on the sidewalk for people to stand in while they have phone conversations, that or sit down at a bus stop or a park bench or a stoop, but you should get a fucking ticket for walking on the phone. I see waaaay too many people nearly get themselves killed perambulating while they chatter
