Feels like we should get one of these going - there's been love shown for Dave's re-showing of old episodes of the UK series of this (not so much for Five US' reruns of the US series), and they might be going from the start again at the moment, so let's have a thread where we can all sit round and talk about them.
Tonight on Dave, two very interesting line-ups. They look to be very much pre-Mochrie and Styles days.
First: episode five of the first series. Merton, Lawrence, Sessions and, er, Jonathan Pryce. Pryce was pretty good, Sessions was kind of at the peak of his insufferability (he's featured very heavily in the opening credits for both these episodes), and Merton and Lawrence were... not exactly floundering, but hardly on top of things.
Second: episode six, an even odder line-up - Sessions is the only regular, and he's joined by Graeme Garden, Jan Ravens, and some lad called George McGrath, whose IMDB entry suggests drifted off into writing for Tracey Ullman. The results are... not wonderful.
― William Bloody Swygart, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 18:44 (seventeen years ago)
To clarify - Garden's turned up dressed like a maths teacher, and is happy to get shunted to the back. Ravens... no-one seems to know what to do with her. She's kind of actressing it up and not really being funny at all. Sessions is bloody Sessions. I was surprised by how much I liked him in later episodes, but here he's kind of running rampant. Infuriatingly so. And McGrath... his nerves are rather getting the better of him. Apart from Sessions, they all seem out of their element, and the whole atmosphere is remarkably awkward.
― William Bloody Swygart, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 18:50 (seventeen years ago)
***SPOILER WARNING***
Ravens wins and gets to read the credits in the style of Paula Yates. The reaction is underwhelming.
― William Bloody Swygart, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 18:57 (seventeen years ago)
Early ones are dire. Sessions' smuggery is beyond unbearable and he isn't funny. Neither is anyone else for that matter. Also awful self-conscious middle class audiences unable or unwilling to join in. It's like the two World Wars, we needed the Yanks to come in and rescue us - but not before they'd let us suffer just a little too long to allow us to be too grateful to them.

I remember seeing one of them where Kate Nash, sorry I mean Josie Lawrence was appealing directly to Brad Pitt to take her away (inbetween rounds, this was), which was um interesting...

What, is she a lezzer or something?
― Tom D., Wednesday, 4 June 2008 10:23 (seventeen years ago)
and he's joined by Graeme Garden
Wait woah you mean the Goodies Graeme Garden? This I must see. Is this UK or US Whose line?
― Trayce, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 10:23 (seventeen years ago)
UK obviously!
― Tom D., Wednesday, 4 June 2008 10:24 (seventeen years ago)

My mum thinks Drew Carey is gay
― Tom D., Wednesday, 4 June 2008 10:36 (seventeen years ago)
Wasn't he raped by his father as a child? That's kinda gay.
― Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 10:38 (seventeen years ago)
No wonder he looks so uncomfortable all the time

The rumours (JL, xpost) were 'on here' at the time, the very next day I saw that episode I just described and said "oh".
So, I guessed not.

Hi, I'm your host, Drew Carey, come on down, and let's have some fun.
I think I saw every single Whose Line episode (US and UK) within half a year. How very depressing. UK's definitely the better, but, really, Ryan Stiles and Mochrie more or less were the show after a while. Search: episodes with manic Slattery and episodes with Stephen Fry. Destroy: Chip Esten & Wayne Brady. Oh, and the singing. Hell, destroy 90% of the show, really.
― Øystein, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 10:50 (seventeen years ago)
Stephen Fry was rubbish on it
― Tom D., Wednesday, 4 June 2008 10:51 (seventeen years ago)
apart from the ones where he was supposed to sing, at which point he'd either fail badly, or just talk through.
OK, he had 'problems' with that (he'd had to get hypnotherapy to be able to sing on a Fry and Laurie show sketch), but hey.
― Mark G, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 10:54 (seventeen years ago)
The early UK ones are horrendous. If an episode doesn't have Mochrie and Styles on it, you may as well turn over.
― Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 10:54 (seventeen years ago)
Wow, Colin Mochrie is Scottish!
― Tom D., Wednesday, 4 June 2008 10:55 (seventeen years ago)
In a kinda David Byrne way
― Tom D., Wednesday, 4 June 2008 10:56 (seventeen years ago)
His attempts at rapping were always worth watching.
― Billy Dods, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 11:06 (seventeen years ago)
I can't fucking watch any WLIIA episode with Sessions in it. Just. Fucking. Can't.
― King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 12:38 (seventeen years ago)
Bullshit. (I can say this, I've performed in Theatresports at Fringe Festivals.)
― King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 12:39 (seventeen years ago)
By the way, if you MUST watch an WLIIA episode with Sessions in it, make sure it's that Season 2 episode where Stiles debuts and wipes the comedy floor with him.

Peter Cook was in one. Proof that comedian != improvisor
― Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 12:48 (seventeen years ago)
Peter Cook did an uncanny impersonation of Peter Cook but nowt else.
― King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 12:52 (seventeen years ago)
Well, I d/l an episode of "Just a minute" with Peter Cook on, one of only two appearances he made on the show, he was great. I guess he had a short attention span for this sort of thing...
― Mark G, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago)
He was distinctly out of place.
And yes, that entire first series is fascinating for being so bad that you can learn buckets from it.

I spread the JL lesbian rumour. A lesbian told me that she was and I figgured she had all sorts of special scene info.
All other rumours I have spread here have been true tho.
― Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 12:58 (seventeen years ago)
Ryan Stiles has a better career overall than Peter Cook I think.

Never seen "Hot Shots" (or have I?) but seriously doubt it could be better than "Bedazzled"
