RFI: Dedicated SMS Devices & Services

My boyfriend doesn't want to own a cell phone ever again, but he would like to have the ability to send & receive text messages. Are there wireless carriers out there that offer text-only plans? What sort of SMS-dedicated devices are available? I'm kinda clueless about this stuff. FWIW, we live in the U.S.

I know this may not be the best forum to ask, but any suggestions as to where to look for more info would be helpful as well.

get a sidekick and just don't answer the phone.
or travel back in time to more innocent days:

elmo, i had both sidekick II and III with t-mobile and only had the data plan which I think is $30 a month for unlimited email, text and internet. its real internet too, which is nice. Oh, also unlimited use of yahoo, aim and msn messengers.

you do get a phone number and you can use the phone to call but you pay per minute rather than pay for a plan. In two and a half year I used it to call out maybe 5 times and never got calls on it.
