For my wife's birthday. Good provisions wanted - expensive is ok. Any ideal locations besides obvious ones like Central Park or the park by the cloisters? Any concerns about public wine consumption?

You gonna pop the jewelry there?
― Abbott, Thursday, 5 June 2008 22:37 (seventeen years ago)
Whoa, easy there.
― Hurting 2, Thursday, 5 June 2008 22:38 (seventeen years ago)
One thing at a time.
― Hurting 2, Thursday, 5 June 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)
Blue Ribbon Bakery/Market looks good but I don't know if there's an ideal picnic spot anywhere near the West Village.

It's a bit of a schlep, but Wave Hill is the best place! Garden +historic home +hudson river =romance. http://www.wavehill.org/home/
It's a very short ride to the Bronx on Metro North and you can walk from the train station to the garden. I'm not sure they allow you to picnic on the grounds though. There's a woodsy, more secluded part down the hill where you can probably eat a sandwich.

Best NYC picnic I ever had was in Prospect Park, in the big field near Grand Army Plaza. There's a good fancy food store on Vanderbilt, I think, and probably lots more in Park Slope depending on where you're coming from. A good bakery too, but I won't bother to look it all up unless you're actually willing to go to Bklyn...

Bread from the Blue Ribbon bakery is totally fantastic, make sure you get some of the thin salty rosemary pizette.

Wave Hill looks aws, but no picnics, apparently.

Invite my landlady and eat her liver.

Im intrigued by Morbs' concept of romance

When life gives you lemons etc.

― Hurting 2, Friday, 6 June 2008 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

― jhøshea, Friday, 6 June 2008 15:35 (seventeen years ago)
apparently members can picnic at the brooklyn botanic gardens on wednesday nights from 6-8. that would be very romantical.
― bell_labs, Friday, 6 June 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)
my pick would be the bronx botanical gardens, but yeah - probably not in 90º+ heat.
― lauren, Friday, 6 June 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)
yah ny botanical gardens in the bronx are really beautiful - tho not sure if they allow picnicking
― jhøshea, Friday, 6 June 2008 15:43 (seventeen years ago)
i've never been to the bronx botanical - i got a membership to the brooklyn one though because it is 2 blocks away from my apartment. i love it there so much.
― bell_labs, Friday, 6 June 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)
Hmm... evening picnic maybe?
― Hurting 2, Friday, 6 June 2008 15:48 (seventeen years ago)
bronx is pretty amazing - its on a another level from brooklyn - they have all these super elaborate shows. i have a friend who works there and ive been up a couple times - saw the japanese chrysanthemum show which was pretty sweet and weird. apparently their annual holiday model train show is just bonkers. its lol so far from brooklyn tho omg.
― jhøshea, Friday, 6 June 2008 15:48 (seventeen years ago)
actually probably won't even be that much cooler by 7pm or so.
― Hurting 2, Friday, 6 June 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah my wife just took her students to the Bronx one - sounds incredible.
bell, you should check to see if there's any reciprocity with the memberships. there may be - i can't remember.
i've picnicked at the bronx one before (you can get goooood food from arther ave beforhand), but i don't know if it's actually allowed. we may have stealth picnicked, since it's so huge that there's always a deserted place to sit down and eat.
― lauren, Friday, 6 June 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)
I'm terrible at planning these things - I always nervously undercut my own ideas until I start to freak out.
― Hurting 2, Friday, 6 June 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)
the henry moore show up now is supposed to be great, btw.
― lauren, Friday, 6 June 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)
last weekend we went to the brooklyn garden after lunch and laid on the grass and read books. there was a jazz festival going on. it felt like i was in some tiny little town instead of nyc which was amazing. also, we saw rabbits.
― bell_labs, Friday, 6 June 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

― jhøshea, Friday, 6 June 2008 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

― lauren, Friday, 6 June 2008 16:28 (seventeen years ago)
Governer's Island is quite nice, but you have BYO everything, there's no deli or food there.
― Dewey B., Friday, 6 June 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)
BYO everything
isn't this what makes a picnic?
― elmo argonaut, Friday, 6 June 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)
