Anime smileys (^_^ and the like): C or D?

I vote DUD since there's very little else more apt to make me run screaming from any figure on the internet. They seem particularly popular with vague nerds introducing themselves on Messenger after seeing my OKCupid profile. Maybe it's just residual self-loathing from my own anime days, but I just hate the things. Are there any legitimate uses?

I think they're cute. But then I am a vague nerd, so what do I know.

StanM, Saturday, 7 June 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

there's a few medical uses.

I find them irritating, but much less so than SMS shorthand like 2 for to (or should that be 2 4 to) and l8 for late and that sort of crap.

These are actually the standard smileys used in Asia (or at least Japan), if you get a cellphone over here they come built in for text messaging. No penises, though.

adamj, Sunday, 8 June 2008 23:33 (seventeen years ago)

in-phone penis would be weird

my japanese phone comes with 99 different emoticons (plus a good couple of hundred picture icons)! i didn't know there were so many nuances of emotion you needed to get across in a message.

permanent resolution, Monday, 9 June 2008 00:58 (seventeen years ago)

Are you sure that isn't... you know... Japanese?

kenan, Monday, 9 June 2008 01:08 (seventeen years ago)

>_<;

permanent resolution, Monday, 9 June 2008 02:15 (seventeen years ago)

I do kinda have to admit to liking the >_< type ones - there's not much the side-smileys can do to really compete.

I should say that my annoyance with these things should not be seen as applying to places where anime-style smiles are culturally normative.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 9 June 2008 03:46 (seventeen years ago)

i like this one for mock horror verging on real horror... or shame D:

gregory first world, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 10:57 (seventeen years ago)

i love'em but sadly don't know the meaning of most of these emoticons. my japanese friends keep adding'em to their mails and messages. i think they are much better than :-) and the like. who lies down to smile when posting to internet anyway?

stevienixed, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 11:04 (seventeen years ago)
