books on american political history: S/D

so i've realized there are quite a few gaps in my knowledge of american history -- or long stretches where i know a bunch of names but probably couldn't summarize anything for you -- so i've resolved to try to read a book covering every year from 1776 (more or less) to the present. i'm focusing on political history since it's where my interest usually lies (and reading up on cultural/social/etc history would take a lot longer).

after going through my bookshelves, here's what i've got:

america, russia and the cold war - walter la feber (1945-1984)
the age of prosperity - william leuchtenberg (1914-1932)
franklin d. roosevelt and the new deal - william leuchtenberg (1932-1940)
the politics of war - walter karp (1890-1920)
reconstruction - eric foner (1863-1877)
only yesterday - frederick lewis allen (1920-1929)

any other suggestions?
