I quit smoking completely three or four years ago, but over the last few months I've slipped back into smoking after a few drinks... occasionally a half-pack over the course of a night.
Is willpower the only option.

yes
my problem was always 'how do you keep from drinking MORE when trying not to smoke?'
― electricsound, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 00:56 (seventeen years ago)
the only way i was able to do it, when i wasn't smoking, was because i didn't want to deal with my girlfriend going fucking apeshit when my mouth tasted like an ashtray. but that only worked about 60% of the time, after my second beer i'd start craving a cigarette like mad.

eventually i just said fuck it and started smoking again.
Yes.
You must engage your will to reject the idea before it goes far enough to light the damn thing and inhale. Once the idea is floating in your mind, it'll take on a life of its own. You can't watch passively as it grows into actions.
You must throttle every such idea in its cradle, if possible. By the time you've got the fag in your hands it is nearly impossible to turn aside and not smoke it. Tell your hands to smash it or throw it away.

Oh god, my most recent girlfriend was an ex-smoker, and she gave me the solemn task of making sure she never succumbed. When she was was pissed I often had to WRESTLE unlit cigarettes out of her hands. It was good in a way, cos I cut down a hell of a lot when I was seeing her out of fear of tempting her too much - would've felt SO gulity if she'd started again because of me.

I only smoke when I drink. Yesterday my girlfriend and I were drinking and of course I happened to have a cigarette in my pocket, so I lit it up. She sort of rolled her eyes, and I said, "Tell me to quit and I will." She said she doesn't want that responsibility, but I suspect it's the easiest way for me to stop.

god i miss smoking indoors.
― chicago kevin, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 01:25 (seventeen years ago)
This is severely tempting.
― milo z, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 01:56 (seventeen years ago)
I'm not even tempted any more when drunk which is rather shocking to me given how deep and long my smoking addiction was. I used that Easy Way to Quit Smoking thing in December and that seems to have been the end of it.

and not to be a zealot but I smoked for twenty five fucking years and really, really liked it so go figure
― J0hn D., Tuesday, 10 June 2008 01:57 (seventeen years ago)
don't do it dude. i don't know how old you are but i've now been smoking for over half my life and since about 31 or 32 the effects are really, REALLY noticeable.
xposts.

it's worrisome and fucking expensive as hell.
― chicago kevin, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 01:59 (seventeen years ago)
Willpower.
I'm a month away from being cigarette-free for an entire year, and I would totally let myself down if I couldn't muster up the ballz to make it that far.
Another way to keep from smoking when drinking, and I hate to be snarky but it's true, is to drink less.
― Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 02:02 (seventeen years ago)
it was hard but i basically... uh... just drank a lot more
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 02:03 (seventeen years ago)
i would have this sort of phantom limb syndrome thing when i was drunk where i'd be like... "something... missing..." but that didn't last forever.

and I hate to be snarky but it's true, is to drink less.
this is what i did. i'd volunteer to drive whenever possible to remove the temptation of having more than two beers.

I fear I'll start again when I stop breastfeeding. So maybe I should just continue to give titty milk until she's 18 yrs old or so?
