Marco Van Basten vs Francesco Totti

People talk quite often about this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLeBKD6_P1E&feature=related - being the greatest goal ever, and with some reason; it's fucking fantastic.

But is this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MzwPwYDNYI - actually better? Similar set-up, but is the angle even more acute, the ball in from further out? Totti certainly strikes it with his left, and weaker foot, whereas Van Basten uses his stronger right foot. Does the setting of Van Basten's goal, an international tournament, make the goal more impressive than Totti's mere league game strike?

FUCK!!! Whenever I think I've seen every incredible strike on Youtube...that one's new to me! And yeah, it's absolutely insane.

Anyone for DiCanio vs. Wimbledon?

I actually think the Van Basten strike is a little better given how high he had to raise his leg, and the fact he stuck it in the top corner. The ball struck me as a little more awkward too.

But still, left-foot...

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 10:56 (seventeen years ago)

And the Roma move is at a faster pace than the Netherlands move...

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 10:57 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway this is all irrelevant because surely the best goal of this type comes one minute into this video

van basten's is better for the reasons outlined by senor jagger.

while we're talking angles though: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Czmy4iOOhIA

I once saw ex-Celtic fullback Chris Morris "score" against Rangers from right on the bye-line, except that the goal was chalked off as the ball had been deemed to have gone behind for a goal kick. So basically he bent the ball out then it bent back in then bent back out again over the goal-line. Now *that's* class. Or a crap linesman. Not on youtube, sadly.

ailsa, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 12:20 (seventeen years ago)

I don't remember that! Surprising, as it's so rare that Scottish referees and match officials give Rangers a break... *not enough dots*

Tom D., Tuesday, 10 June 2008 12:24 (seventeen years ago)

Haha, that Carlos one is class, but was so obviously just an attempt to keep the ball in play and get it in the mixer!

Van Basten's was a cross gone wrong!!

Jarlrmai, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 14:05 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, right...

This one rules them all

willem, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

Favorite cross gone wrong

Van Basten really was a class piece of work. Greatest striker ever? If only his knee hadn't been butchered.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

That Josimar goal is an amazing strike - if it weren't for his fucking lunatic celebration you'd think he meant it.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

Totti's execution is arguably better than Van Basten's but he loses for that shitty lame thumb sucking shit after it.
